I love this song. My brother died from AIDS in 1994 & these words so describe his experiences with the disease. All these years later & I still weep when I hear this song. To think not only for him getting sicker over time but friends & family turning their backs on him because he was sick.
Hes actually singing it live in the video with a microphone under his shirt. The vocals in the movie/album version is much more polished sounding. I think the song works best like this. More raw and fitting of the subject matter.
There is another story behind running around, saying that the song has been written but not published by Bruce years before dedicated to a good buddy of him , who suffered from blood cancer. Maybe that both stories are correct and it was Bruce himself, who has rediscovered the song for the "Philadelphia" movie request.
What I love about this music video is Springsteen never lip syncs. He is singing "live to tape", hence the difference in sound between his voice and the backing track. You hardly ever see anything like this in the music business. I think it makes the music video that much more personal.
This song never fails to wreck me every time it is so powerful. I would definitely suggest backstreets or anything from the darkness on the edge of town album to listen to next
Not necessarily one of Bruce's catchier hits or one of my favorites by him, but it was for an important movie that shed light on discrimination and the hard times of people living with HIV/AIDS. It won the Academy Award for best song from a movie, so kudos for its message.
Love the show and this song made you sob as Tom Hanks dies of Aids in the early years of treatment that didn't work. Love Bruce's wife Patti, is his background singer, is incredible! The movie was incredible and Denzel Washington was fab in it! Thank goodness the medication and stem cell treatments are keeping our brothers and sisters alive for decades. Tunnel of love is my fav Springsteen song. Plus Born to Run which was his first giant hit!
Bruce made a point of writing it from the first person perspective so it's the songs singer that has AIDS. He also decided to appear in the video singing it to further drive that point home. It's a song about the singer- not someone singing about someone else. That took a lot of courage back then.
Intense lyrics with a contrasting video. The juxtaposition/symbols of life (children, freedom, "slice of life") depiction with opposing lyrics of a man hopelessly facing his own mortality. Powerful stuff.
I just rewatched Philadelphia again last night. Beautifully sad movie! I usually cry every time especially when Neil Young sings at the end of the movie. Love Neil Young’s voice! 😪❤️🎵
Thanks India- so glad you did this one. It’s an important song and film I think more people should know about. It totally changes your perception of people in that situation with one listen. Thanks again
This song is not only so recognisable for hiv patients but also for drug dependent people who don’t recognise themselves anymore and slowly see themselves fading away. The strength and courage needed lies within.
This song just came out when I was learning english(I'm from Hungary), and my teacher said, that she must check the lyrics, because she did not hear Springsteen's mumbling well :D
The Live in New York version of “Atlantic City” is my all-time favorite Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band song. Storytelling through music at its finest. No one captures a mood like Bruce.
Again.. Streets Of Philadelphia, everything in a poets dream can be inspired with depths in the song that you can fall so far deep as you want to. I have yet to see the film but now I am on it. Ordering that film now. And India, I love you beautiful. I love your channel.
so glad you are reacting to Bruce, he is a true artist, songwriter and performer. the Born To Run album is great, also try to check out some live performances, you'll love it. keep rockin' girl!
He is just SO The Boss!! He writes songs that touch me all the way down to the inside of my toenails!! I've been following him since 1978, I've seen him 13 times, I've MET him and I guarantee, he WILL sing at my funeral! On tape of course.
Lay’s classic potato chip. So simple, so salty, so perfect. This song, on the other hand is complex and poignant. Absolutely beautiful in its immediate desperation.
Other great songs by the great Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen that you should react to: "Drive All Night" "Racing In The Street" "Independence Day" "The Wrestler" "Jungleland" "Thunder Road" "Radio Nowhere" "Steets Of Fire" "Sundown" "There Goes My Miracle" Greetings from Sweden / Joel
At the very end, he's on the New Jersey side you see the skyline of Philadelphia! Bruce was born and raised in Long Branch, New Jersey, some of his songs are about the Jersey shore, one of them is 4th of July, Asbury Park(Sandy) give a listen to that.
If you listen carefully, you can tell that Bruce is actually singing this live in the video (with the backtrack playing). That's why it sounds a little different. Another video he sings live in is "Brilliant Disguise"...I highly recommend watching that one too, because not only does he sing live in it, he does it in one take. It's very impressive. (and it's an excellent song, too!)
Great reaction of the Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen. I thinks this a beautiful song 🖤 I hope you can react to Bruce Springsteen's song "Glory Days" from 1984. Of this amazing music-video of Springsteen.
He was singing as if he had aides. It was the title song from the movie Philadelphia where Tom Hanks played a lawyer with aides and was treated very badly by his coworkers. Very powerful song and movie. I think this song was with the theme from Titanic for song of the year.
I'm old enough to remember the first reports of AIDS. It was first reported as "flu like" symptoms that seemed to be exclusive to gay males. The medical community was slow to react to it as was the government. In 1985 that changed when Rock Hudson announced he had AIDS and was seeking treatment in France. I remember the panic after Rock made his announcement because he had a starring role in the show Dynasty and had kissing scenes with his co-star Linda Evans. There was also panic because no one (at the time) was exactly sure how the disease transmitted and that's shown in the Philadelphia movie when Tom Hank's character shakes Denzel Washington's hand, tells him he has AIDS and the response is for Denzel's character to wipe his hands on his pant leg.
"Ain't no angel gonna greet me..." That one line says it all, how frightening and lonely it must have been to have AIDS at that time . There was still such fear about it that people often had no one, NO ONE (even doctors and nurses) who wanted to be near them...not even angels (because it was mostly gay men and IV drug users at the time, some said they deserved it due to their lifestyles, that they were "sinners"). The song really hauntingly captures the feeling of despair at not only having something that was going to kill you and the abandonment of family, friends, co-workers, healthcare workers, SOCIETY. One can never truly feel how people with AIDS were treated in the beginning years (and to some extent, still) but this song and the movie help us to walk in their shoes a bit, empathize and maybe treat others with more kindness.
Springsteen has written songs about social issues his whole career. His hit “born in the USA” is a song about how soldiers were treated after the Vietnam war. Many people think it is a patriotic song. He also did a song called “American Skin (41 shots)” about the senseless police shooting of Amadou Diallo in which police boycotted Springsteen’s concerts and refused to provide security for him.
Just want to let you know that Philadelphia has improved a lot since 1992. There are beautiful neighborhoods and villages throughout the city, and they have some of the best restaurants in the country! My daughter lives near the big mural at the end of the video. It’s a happening place for young people who grew up in the suburbs. They love the convenience of walking everywhere/ taking subway and the night life is great! Really they don’t want to come back! I walked through the neighbors at night with her-totally safe!
This song, from the movie Philadelphia, always makes me cry. Tom Hanks has AIDS in the movie, and is going to die. My brother died of AIDS related pneumonia 34 years ago. He was 28. "My clothes don't fit me no more. I'd walk a 1000 miles just to slip this skin". He lived in MI, and me in NC. I didn't know how sick and emaciated he was. He told his friends not to tell me he was in the hospital. He didn't want me to remember him that way. He died 2 days later. When I got to MI he had already been cremated. I miss you Robert:-(
I know this one was a year ago but, you would get a kick out of "Fire" performed live by Bruce Springsteen. He wrote the song but the Pointer Sisters made it famous.
You have got to react to Bruce Springsteen "Dancing In The Dark"! It's my favorite! The girl he pulls up to dance from the audience is the (THEN) unknown Courtney Cox- it's very cool. That and the song "I'm Going Down". Must see ! ((HUGS))
Love seeing these reactions to Bruce. You should check out Incident on 57th St from the Live in Barcelona performance, which is available on Bruce’s official UA-cam channel.
The HIV/AIDS crisis and the discrimination that it caused is the main theme from the movie. There's a movie called "and the band played on " which at the end has a song by Elton John "a father and his son " which tears me up every time I see it. We lost so many people and talent during that time, and we still don't have a cure but with the drug cocktails they are able to live with it. To all the family's of the victims my deepest condolences. My favorite Bruce Springsteen song is "Thunder road" try that one.
A very powerful sing about serious disease which was once a certain death sentence and the discrimination and lack of understanding surrounding HIV/AIDS
The way Tom Hanks was stairing, if ever a man could capture his characters raw emotions on his face. If you have ever truly believed with certainty you were about to die which I have, you would understand the genius of Tom Hanks in that moment.
I think you, and those of you who haven’t watched this movie, should. Take some time out away from the ‘instantness’ of things now, and invest in your mind. The film is about HIV and AIDS, at a time when it was a death sentence and a taboo subject. However the film is about prejudice. With Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks, once you watch this you will never forget it. I didn’t. I saw it when it was released in 1993. The film is more relevant today than ever. Thanks for taking the time to read this and good karma to you all 🙏🏾
powerful song about the loneliness and stigma of aids in the early 1980s. Several key lines give away the fact that the song is talking about aids. “ Wasting away” “ Fading away“ and “ My clothes don’t fit me no more” all could be talking about the significant weight loss that often accompanies full-blown AIDS. Very sad time in history and powerful song “Voices of friends vanished and gone” Means that most gay men that were suffering from aids in the early 80s often knew lots of other members of their community that had died, one after the other, from AIDS.
You should react to "the Ghost of Tom Joad". I'm pretty sure that it wasn't a single so there's no music video that I know of but, in my opinion, it's Bruce Springsteen's best song.
I love this song. My brother died from AIDS in 1994 & these words so describe his experiences with the disease. All these years later & I still weep when I hear this song. To think not only for him getting sicker over time but friends & family turning their backs on him because he was sick.
Damn people turning their backs on him is so fucked up
❤
Sorry for your loss man
I'm sorry 😔 I'm from Brazil 🇧🇷
My uncle passed of AIDS in 1991. Great athlete but chose the wrong path. I feel for you 🤜🏼🤛🏼❤️🩹
I can't hear this song without bawling my eyes out.
This and Neil young’s Philadelphia perfectly encapsulate the emotions of that film. Both brilliant.
This song won the Academy Award for Best Song.
It also won 3 Grammys in the same year
Yes it is Tom Hanks. This is the title song from the film "Philadelphia" where he plays a man wo has AIDS.
...not HIV but full blown AIDS..
Now you need to watch the movie "Philadelphia"
Great movie!
Make sure you have plenty of tissues when watching the film. I mean, I ugly cried over that one
@@alanrobinson-orr8748 you aren't the only one!
Not to be confused with sleepless in Seatle lol.
omg...i will never forget that movie..a real tearjerker
I honestly love how she waits for song to end to talk.. hate when people interrupt all the time.. well done!!! Plus I love bruce
Hes actually singing it live in the video with a microphone under his shirt. The vocals in the movie/album version is much more polished sounding. I think the song works best like this. More raw and fitting of the subject matter.
Wow I didn't know that he is so amazing I love the boss. Always have. Legend.
I was wondering why it sounded different 😀
He also sang "Brilliant Disguise" live with backtrack playing in the music video....and it's done in one take. It's very impressive.
@@andrewkelley434 - Yes, one take, and, strangely, Brilliant Disguise" won a best editing award.
All the background noise is distracting. Also distracting is that, BECAUSE he is live, his voice doesnt blend with the mix.
That look he gives the camera when he sings "I'd walk a thousand miles just to slip this skin" drills right into you.
This song was superbly written for the movie *Philadelphia,* with Tom Hanks.
Who plays a man with AIDS. Very good movie...
There is another story behind running around, saying that the song has been written but not published by Bruce years before dedicated to a good buddy of him , who suffered from blood cancer. Can't listen to this without thinking about the movie. Great.

I remember watching the movie Philadelphia in the theatre. You’ve gotta watch it, it’ll bring you to tears.
I like that Bruce was actually singing live while he was walking in the video.
Bruce is the bosssss. I love his music so much i got a tattoo with his lyrics
Same here, on the underside of my forearm, I have "Learn to live with what you can't rise above" From Tunnel of Love
@@MJ.71 Good choice 👌

Can’t hear this song without getting goosebumps and tears in my eyes. The song just brings the movie back to life in my mind. Such an emotional combo.
I would love to see your reaction to Springsteen's "Jungleland." Please?
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band = best music ever
I just rewatched Philadelphia again last night. Beautifully sad movie! I usually cry every time especially when Neil Young sings at the end of the movie. Love Neil Young’s voice! 😪❤️🎵
Neil Youngs 'Philadelphia' is worth looking into. From the same Film.
He is writing from the perspective of Tom Hanks character dying of aids
Thanks India- so glad you did this one. It’s an important song and film I think more people should know about. It totally changes your perception of people in that situation with one listen. Thanks again
You would love "Philadelphia" by Neil Young, on the same movie OST . The scene with this song at the end of the movie would make stones cry.
Powerful film Philadelphia, I was on a course in prison once, and 1 of the lessons was just watching this.
This song is not only so recognisable for hiv patients but also for drug dependent people who don’t recognise themselves anymore and slowly see themselves fading away. The strength and courage needed lies within.

You have too see the movie, it's very powerful and moving! That's all I can say.😔
This song will always make me cry… the movie tears me up… those days were brutal…
I think this is the best song ever written for a movie and the most deserved Oscar.

Every song that Bruce does, has a great story and meaning behind it. Nobody writes lyrics like The Boss
India, you send me. Beautiful smile. Bruce has won an Emmy, Tony, Grammies, and an Oscar. I’ve seen him many times, he sings to our soul.
Philadelphia was a beautiful place to be back in the 1990s. Been there many times throughout my life.

Tom Hanks won Best Actor Oscar for this movie, but it could just as easily been awarded to Denzel Washington who was great as the co-lead.
Hi India, Bruce is called the Boss, my faves are SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT, THE RIVER, DOWNBOUND TRAIN and POINT BLANK.
they asked bruce after the other artist couldnt do it. he came back the next day with this song. legend.
I think of this song in broader contexts than the movie. Loneliness, being lost, hopelessness, etc.
The Boss rules😀, More you should see and hear him. Only twice seen live but soooooo great.... Take care!

One of the greatest song writers of all time. He wrote a lot of songs about the plight of steel workers.
Denzell Washington was in the movie as well as Tom Hanks. A great production.
The song and the film shake me to my core!
Oh look, our Bruce has knocked up another classic. How many is that now?
The movie is on netflix. Watched it the other night. Denzel and Tom. Great movie! 🤧

"Dancing in the Dark" is a great song. Courtney was so young and fresh faced.

Only Bruce Springsteen can make such a beautiful video by such a tragic thing
Oh my, I didn't recognize Tom Hanks at all. The music video makes me very nostalgic.
You gotta listen to Jungleland! Very great and emotional song by Bruce Springsteen
Girl you need more Springsteen! Born to Run!
The song reminds me of me on the streets of Brooklyn during the crack epidemic in the late 80's. Wasted away, unrecognizable to myself.
Definitely need to see the movie ..
