honestly this might sound petty but I think a lot of newer kpop fans, especially 4th gen but also a lot of 3rd gen fans, are kind of threatened by 2nd gen artists who have been able to maintain their names so far? And this is just something I've seen a lot on twitter (I'm more into 3rd and 4th gen too so I'm not trying to demonize anyone).
I think because Taemin is easily one of the if not *the* most relevant 2nd gen artist right now a lot of newer Kpop fans get kind of defensive over who's more iconic, who """"paved the way"""" or who's the best dancer or who's the most successful. Similar to how I think a lot of people who get into Kpop through groups other than BTS are sometimes very aggressive towards them because they're "not all that" compared to their favorite artists. You know? I've seen even a lot of Armys (but not just Armys) randomly trying to diss Taemin for no reason, making "flop" edits, calling him overrated, etc. I think because he's outlasted pretty much everyone around him and is so widely acknowledged as one of the most respected idols he becomes threatening to a lot of newer/younger fans, so people get very put out about actually listening to his music.
Also SM does a shit job promoting him.

@@Carolina-wz2qo It is sad that for some people Kpop is all about numbers and competition and not about talent. Taemin is one of the most talented, sweetest and humble Artist I have ever seen and yet some fans from other groups diss him for not reason at all, except that Taemin is not in their favs group.
Also, I have seen comments saying that he is old when in fact there are at least 30 idols from the 3rd generation that are older than him and at least a dozen that are only a few months younger. I admit that SHINee is my # one group, but I will never go into another artist video and leave a negative comment, like I have seen many people do or even mention any SHINee members on a video that is not related to them.
I wish that people grow up and appreciate every Artist effort to bring their best to us, their fans.

If you like Criminal, IDEA and Advice for different reasons, you don't like one more than the other, you like them all and that is a very good sign meaning Taemin can pull off anything and deliver greatness. I guess him starting his career earlier also helped with him leaving us with an entire successful career. I think he cried more for going to the military than the fans, we were comforting him so he can go confidently and return healthly.

I agree with everything you say except that he cried more going to military than his fans. I think we cried and cry just as much or even more than him, but it’s because we love him so much and our relationship with him is so close we just didn’t show it that much to bring him comfort and shower him with words of positive reinforcement rather than to burden him even more with our pain… Jjakgoongs I know are absolutely devastated with his absence. There’s literally no one who can fill the void, but all we can do for him is give him love and confidence that we’ll be right by his side and waiting for his return.

@@Auntie67 I was surprised and deeply saddened by his open vulnerability re military service. I was totally taken aback by it. His fear was palpable even when he was trying to be upbeat. To be honest, I do not know how a dancer of his caliber can come back to the height of his form after two years of no dancing. Dancers have short careers in any case -- and to rob them of precious prime years feels unforgivable. I think he felt deeply this deeply -- along with fear that in the absence a fan base will desert him. It was also very poignant that he revealed his loneliness. At any rate...He is an artist thus will rise to the challenge and find new ways to express himself. I feel really really sad that he will be out of our lives for probably at least 2 years. It seems an eternity because as you say, we feel close to him not just as a fan of his art but as a fellow human being whom we care about and who touches us deeply.

This song left such a huge impact on me, I have never appreciated an artist's ambition more. Advice really did feel like an ending, he really gave everything, there was really nowhere higher for him to go. Taemin kept talking about this as being the end of the first act of his life and how strange and hard it was for him to realise that he has never stopped once in his life. PD, you are absolutely correct in that the lyrics are dark, aggressive, and even, shocking.
"Don't f**k with me" is precisely the vibe Taemin wants to convey.
The lyrics are directed at faceless haters.
Those who skulk behind their keyboards, sending hate, and feeling entitled to dictate how someone else should think, speak, and act.
Taemin has clarified that the "finger steepling" dance move at 10:33 mimics gossips, the way people whisper rumors behind a concealing hand.
This track is a warning shot.
He is telling the haters he doesn't care for their ill-spirited "advice", and cliched statements.
A parting salvo, if you will, before he enlists.
Imagine what else Taemin will have to say, having completed his military enlistment.
18 months of pent-up creativity, an array of new experiences, and the beginning of a new chapter of his life.
Act 2, as he puts it.

It's so interesting, i always find myself naturally comparing other artists and groups. Not as a bad thing, just observations you know. Like, this group has better singers, this group has better performers etc. I NEVER do that with Taemin. He is a different beast.
I might hear a song from one group and wonder how another might interpret or cover it. But never with Taemin. He is just THAT unique.

Taemin gave us the best of him, he worked hard till now, deserves everything and more, but i’m actually glad that he is able to take this brief break. He literally been in the showbiz since his adolescence nonstop, so i hope the time that he will spend in the military can be his gateway..and finger-cross taemin will be back with the better version of him, and i’m so excited for that! Taemin is the only artist in kpop that has a veeeeeery distinct style that is definitely different from the whole music industry. He is his own genre. I have been listening to Taemin's songs since Move too but the releases last year got me stuck and wanting more from him. It's just most songs now has been (sorry for the lack of better term) common(?) Like they just don't have or lack identity and creativity from the solo/group. Taemin is what I think the true embodiment of the word artist.

Taemin is my ultimate bias since i was a kid, i always thought that when he left to military it would shake me, but he reached a point where I'm EXCITED for him to take a break and see what he will do when he comes back. This man has been working non-stop, especially since the other members left, with his solo stuff, tours, then superm, and more tours, all that with consistent AMAZING releases both on korea and japan... He left so much amazing material for us that i'm feeling "sated" and content to wait for his return without losing my mind, because as you said, he has an amazing legacy already. I thought the lyrics were directly calling out k-media? Or like rumor mills? And that’s what I thought the shredded paper(useless rumors in newspaper) and car crash(like ones caused by media/fans) were symbolizing. Anyway that was my interpretation! I really thought that was a cool message before he left. Like “I’ll be gone for a bit but watch yourself and I don’t give a shit about your rumors.” I haven’t searched around to see if others or Taemin himself have commented about the meaning/inspiration(so don’t come at me if I’m wrong).

While it might chart well, it will not last and he will lose his identity.
