I have loved his boats for years and was finally able to purchase a vessel built off the RS-22 lines a couple of years back. It is my home now and I am looking to one day sail it to Norway and see where it all began. Thanks for a great video!!!
My dream boat! I lived on the island of Ulvoya ( Wolf Island) in the Oslo Fjord when I was very young and there were a couple anchored there....I've always had a total fascination for them ever since. I'm a sailor myself now but I will never be able to afford one. Fabulous history on these Colin Archers. Super vid! I watch it over and over. Thanks.
Too bad those old boats don't actually work in real life. Where's his electric auto pilot? Where are his electric self tailing winches? Are all his lines led aft? I bet he doesn't even have Kevlar sails! Amazing he got out of the harbor in one piece! In all seriousness, that's one of the most beautiful and perfect boats ever made by the hand of man, and this is one of the best videos on UA-cam.
Check out Iain Oughtred's 18 foot Wee Seal design. He also has a 22 foot version, Grey Seal. You can definitely see the influence. Oughtred has been influenced heavily by the Norwegian boats.
I have been a great admirer of Colin Archer's designs for many years as well, especially the RS boats. They mustbe the most seaworthy vessels ever designed. I saw the STAVANGER under canvas outside the Norske Maritime Museum in July. Her planking has shrunk considerably, and she looked every bit her age. When in Bergen, I saw another RS boat apparently being refitted. I couldn't get very close to her. I would love to see photos of your boat! Where do you sail her?
i think the hans christian borrowed many plans from C Archer design. Here in NZ we are sailing on the Vega , C Archer ketch . Sweet boat ex green peace boat.
@budnotu : Hello! There are a few boatbuilders in Norway who build Colin Archer: Oslo trebåtbyggeri, Fredrikstad Maritime Senter, Hansen&Arntzen in Statelle, Risør Trebåtbyggeri, Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter, Djupvåg Båtbyggeri.
We are currently in Alaska and will be heading south in a couple of days weather permitting. Our boat was a one off made of steel in France in 1969 and is a bit of an odd duck; but we love her all the same. You can see some pictures of her on our blog which you can fine by doing a search for "steelketch.blogspot" in google. Thanks for the comment.
What are the Dimensions of this Boat specifically does anyone know? Im look at a Colin Archer design Ketch that is 40 feet overall, and trying to compare it to this one dimensionally and layout wise. Do they have a website?
FWIW at 1:47 they say this one is 47 ft long, 4.65 m wide/beam, and displace 31 tons (I assume metric). 110 m^2 sail area. And in 1901 cost 10,363 NOK ;)
Call and talk with he great people at Larvik Maritime Museum. They have almost all of Mr. Archers original plans and will run copies for you for a very reasonable price. I ordered the 1902 Russian plans from them and they were great.
I packed urchins off Vancouver is. on a similar vessel. Nordvag. 1938 Swedish herring scow. 64x20 Slept 8 in the fo'c'sle . Got my ex pregnant on her. Great vessel. Super stable.
There is nothing quite like the sight of a sailing boat in the groove.....Fantastic video.

Envy, envy, envy! I don't know what you said, but I sure love that boat. Now I know what I want for Christmas. Thank you for sharing.
No idea of the Norwegian language, but the Stavanger is one awesome classic boat. Real sailors man that vessel!

No other sailing boat has better behaviour in high waves, making it quite confortable during long voyages.
Sailing like a fish swims, so natural! SkipRay.

They still work! They have engines and work like clockwork if handled nicley.
Fantastic. This video is now one of the collection of Project Pearl Drum Circle (which seeks to recover the seamanship caiçara in Brazil).
One of the best woodboat of the world.
Grazie per questo bellissimo video. Luigi
Great boat!
Legendarische boot ❤😂😊
Is there a way to get a translation of this? This is the most beautiful sailboat I have ever seen.
Colin archer boat...!
Is my dream.
Colin Archer designed and built some of the greatest seaworthy boat that were ever built. Is anyone building them in Norway?
an inflatable dingy just doesn't look right behind that lovely boat.

How many lives were saved with these boats?
