if you notice when Captain K comes to Jojo when the Gestapo are there, he is carrying Rosie’s bike, so she would have already been killed. He knew what she was doing and came immediately to make sure Jojo was safe.
I see this comment on every reaction of this movie lmao
At the risk of offending someone...Captain K was a hero in his own right. He covered for Elsa and did what he had to in order to spare Jojo from execution because Jojo was just a kid.
@@hidoradaikaiju4205 He was. He understood what it was like to hide from persecution.
@@bitter_light yeah, given the not-so-subtle clues that he's a closeted gay guy, I imagine he wasn't too fond of the reich.
I didn't notice that before. Good eye man.
Aaron - “I have no idea if it’s drama, comedy, action..”
Me - “Yes”
In Captain K and Finkel costumes at the end you can see a pink triangle. Nazis used that symbol to identify prisoners arrested for homosexuality.
They had a secret of their own which is why they helped Jojo, and in that gestapo scene K knows Jojo's mother has been killed, thats why he goes running at his house with the mother's bike (I think) to protect Jojo.
It's also why he covers for Elsa. As a homosexual he's fully aware what Nazi persecution would entail. Had he been found out he'd ended up in a concentration camp himself.
That gives him so much more depth.
They were going out "loud and proud".
Also gay people were still imprisoned after the war ended, and left off of early holocaust memorials. So even if he had survived the war, the fact that he covered himself in pink triangles meant that he would have just gone straight to prison, which makes me think they never intended to survive that battle, and the fact that he could save Jojo was a nice extra.
@@alexclimbs9 This is fucking depressing :c
This movie is a masterpiece. They worked the balance of making fun of the Nazis and simultaneously taking the seriousness of their regime perfectly.
it really did walk that fine line
yeah, my mother won't watch the film with me because she doesn't want to make light of the tragedy and it certainly doesn't.

Absolutely everytime I rewatch Captain K saving Jojo from the firing squad I cry, without fail. Its just how immediate it is, he doesn't hesitate at all. He just sees Jojo, immediately comforts him and praises his mother while offering his condolences, and with the same casual sad smile saves Jojo's life.
The look of satisfaction on his face as he sees Jojo is going to live just destroys me
Shame, he had his partner's cloak with him too, he had almost nothing except to save JoJo at that point
@@techissus7449 Oh nooo, I never noticed that. That fucking hurts.
Man I remember getting goose skin when seeing the Red Army soldiers... I knew what was going to happen. Mr. K wins the ultimate defender-protector character right next to Boromir.
@@petrhanke8644 they’re not red army. They’re Americans.
@@subnetplayer490 no,no check them again they are the Reds, slightly khaki uniforms and PPsh smgs.
What they did with Captain K was so well done but so subtle. The moments between him and Finkel imply their relationship and it's confirmed by the pink triangle he's wearing at the end. it's also kind of implied that he's actively trying to sabotage the Hitler youth unit. Plus when he goes to their house it's on Rosie's bike so he was going specifically to make sure Jojo was okay and then he covered for them too, and as a gay Nazi soldier it's pretty obvious why he would help them out. Then on top of all that, at the end he saves Jojo. I get the impression he wasn't as actively involved in the resistance or helping Jews as Rosie was and was more concerned about keeping himself and Finkel safe and I think he really admired Rosie's determination to help people and that's part of what inspired him to save Jojo the way he did. I also get the impression that him and Rosie were pretty close and wouldn't be surprised if Rosie knew about his "proclivities", because while he is demoted he's still technically in a position of authority but that doesn't stop her from scolding him, as if they know each other pretty well and she trusted him to keep Jojo safe, like leaving your son with a close friend or relative. But some of this I didn't even catch on my first watch, really impressive way of giving a character a lot of depth without actually saying that much.
Yeah I think that like Rosie, he was ‘doing what he could’ it was just within tighter limitations, and maybe in a bit more pessimistic way. I also like that his and Finkel’s final uniforms are modified enough to imply that they are not really Nazis ideologically. In the same way that Jojo starts to wear more casual clothes as he becomes de-indoctrinated, and then Rebel Wilson’s fanatical character puts a uniform on him, then Captain K rips it off, and he never wears it again.
I think it's because technically he wasn't just a nazi soldier, he was in the army from before. After the nazi party were "elected", I think the army was folded into the troops of the nazi party. So yeah not everyone willingly became a nazi
@@amnaasif3314 adding, not only was it folded. I bet it was a situation where you couldn't just leave either after it was folded into troops.
Most underrated comment here, fantastic.
"I'm starting to think these Nazis aren't good people." Is such a perfect rendition of "Are we the baddies ?"
Is this a michell and Webb reference lol?
I love how they show how the nazi indoctrination has robbed Jojo of so much of his childhood, and contrast it with how his mum see's the world with doing silly voices, playing pranks etc.

Waititi deliberately did no research on Hitler before writing the film, saying he didn't deserve it. But funnily enough, the scene where he's inexplicably wearing a Native American headdress could actually be seen to play into how Hitler was obsessed with pulp western stories as a kid.
Yeah he was. Those stories are also what apparently seeded in him the idea of conquering a larger area and pushing out the inhabitants so that his people could colonize the area
@@Spongebrain97 cool
@@Spongebrain97 - He wouldn't need to look at Native American lore or western pulp fiction. He'd only need to read a history book about Europe...or Africa...or Asia...or South America...or North America. "Colonization," "conquest" and "subjugation" has been tantamount to the HUMAN experience and not just Europeans moving to the New World. Native America tribes were conquering other Native American tribes long before Columbus (or even Leif Erikson) ever stepped foot in North America or the Carribbean. In fact, the Huns had a long history of this -- both as conquerors and would-be conquered.
@@ccchhhrrriiisss100 yeah but again Hitler specifically looked at US history for that inspiration especially because it was more recent at that time. Not just conquering territory but making a specific effort to wipe out the natives who were perceived as being subhuman, much like Hitler saw the Jews and Slavs in eastern Europe.
@@Spongebrain97 - How do you know this? In MEIN KAMPF, Hitler mentions European continental history -- especially the Greeks, Romans and Huns. He even mentions Islamic encroachment into Europe (before the Crusades).
I've never seen any indication that the Monster of Berlin even cited European colonization into the New World as a motivation for conquering the rest of Europe.
There was a law professor who wrote a book about a theory that the Nazis (and not Hitler in particularly) potentially studied discrimination in America as something either as a primer or perogative in their dealing with Jews, Gypsies, etc.
However, that book itself was loudly criticized for lacking any historical proof (and, indeed, the author only mentions Native Americans in 11 pages -- but none within any sort of concrete historical citations). It was largely relying upon the "it's common knowledge" fallacy.
More importantly, Nazis looked at racial laws around the world. Since (especially at that time) the U.S. was the most racially diverse nation on the planet, it effectively would have been the most notable primer to consider.
The Nazi solution was to actually ship off non-Germans to other parts of the world. There are radical conspiracy theories all over Europe and the Soviet Union about Jews at the time (i.e., controlling and colluding as bankers/moneylenders, media moguls, jewelers, etc.), Gypsies (i.e., inherently crooked and untrustworthy on a genetic level), Slavs and Polish (i.e., unintelligent). The Nazi solution initially was expelling Jews and Gypsies and subjugating Slavs and Polish. Eventually, they turned to a genocidal "solution."
If the Nazis indeed studied European colonization into the New World and cohabitation of native tribes with European colonizers, then they came to view the American way as wrong. Nazis chose genocide and official "eugenics" and "conspiracy" propaganda.
The film is so brilliant at its subtle storytelling/foreshadowing. You're absolutely right about Rosie's shoes being focussed on so much so we'd recognise them in that moment. The film also signposts her death when the Gestapo are at the house because Captain K rushes in with her bike. She's already dead at that point, the Gestapo are there trying to find more information on her Resistance work, and Captain K either saw her body or knew she'd been caught and was trying to get back the house before they did to protect Jojo.
During the war scene Jojo hides from the bombing by "burrowing" under the building like a rabbit.

I can't believe Aaron and Calvin didn't know anything about this movie, their reactions at the beginning were priceless! XD
I remember distinctly thinking, when I was watching this in the theatre, 'Wow, I don't think I have a single favourite scene in this movie. Most of the time I have individual scenes/episodes that work, and ones that don't, but this movie has been so consistently good that one doesn't particularly rise to the top.'
Of course then a 10-year-old boy Sparta kicked Hitler out a window, so that idea was kinda crushed, but still - I honestly can't think of a single thing in this movie that doesn't work. Even actors I don't particularly like or have strong feelings about at all are great in this.
Eric's and Aaron's simultaneous sad nod when Calvin states the obvious 19:10
Great catch
There's so many things great about this movie, but Yorkie stands above them all.
& when he says he needs to see his mum and have a cuddle 🥺🫂
You guys should really watch the 'What We Do In The Shadows' movie. Taika is absolutely brilliant in that and the whole thing is fantastic.
The series is great too.
Yes
They should do that too!
The series is amazing. Emotional vampires are the single most hilarious thing I've ever heard of. I definitely work with a couple!
Matt Berry as lazlo is so good in that show
One of my favorite movies. And After a long time of not giving the show a try, fearing possible disappointment,
I am watching it and I love it 😊😁😆
I went into this movie thinking it was going to be really cheesy and childish but it was brilliant. It has so much charm.
The movie is based on the book Caged Skies by Christine Leunens a Belgian/NZ author whose grandfather spent time in Nazi Labor Camps. This movie is sublime in its brilliance, such a mesh of tragedy and whimsy, horror and hope. To balance so perfectly vilifying the atrocity which is Nazism and also show the quiet courage of those who did resist. A superb film.
Apparently the movie is an (admittedly loose) adaptation of the first half of the novel, the main difference being Jojo commits to the lie that they won the war and the second half is the YEARS of manipulation he goes through to keep that lie going. I’m glad they went with a different ending.
I am a little surprised you guys never heard of the film before. It was an Oscar movie and the winner of the Toronto Film Festival Best Picture award. The Academy nominated it for six Oscars -- picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actress (Johansson), editing, costume design, and art direction. Taika Waititi won for best adapted screenplay.
Don't forget, the kid's father wasn't around, so of course he'd would want to make up a father figure, especially one that was so enigmatic in the eyes of any impressionable child. I hope you try Waititi's other flicks if you haven't already (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What we do in the Shadows, especially, even if on your own time).
Btw, "walk the clones" was a riff off the Hitler clones flick, Boys from Brazil (also cool).
When a government of a country wants to take the place of a father, your kids are in trouble. The first sign is when there's a huge amount of missing fathers in the household in a particular country.
At least their “gaydar” has gotten better, so they can catch the Captain K stuff. But they still missed stuff in Legend of Korra and Good Omens (granted Legend of Korra was kinda subtle). I will never get over Calvin saying “Such a good friend” while romantic music is playing in Good Omens 😂
I think they also missed out on Griffith's obsession with Guts
i mean with season 2 of good omens coming, when they do react to it i hope this time they get it right lmao
Eric in particular has been catching stuff a lot more, like in Harley Quinn and Fate Zero off the top of my head. They're learning lol
With Korra they had to fight against Nickelodeon to get any kind of hints in there
Ohh Calvin the walking embodiment of "They were roommates" bless him for it :P
Sam Rockwell's character shows up with the mothers bike, so I think he saw they had hung her and knows they'll be going to the house, hence why he showed up to check on him.
This film is a ride being hilarious yet handling the content serious enough to be truly effecting
i think about that "german shepard" scene a lot lol

@Ashton Silva o stfu
@Ashton Silva I agree but I also love weeb wave :(
The outfit Captain K dons for the last fight, in the scene where he saves Jojo, you can see a small pink triangle on his right breast pocket. His own addition, no doubt, but the pink triangle was used by Nazis to represent homosexuals. Relationship between him and Finkel unconfirmed, but extremely likely given the hints and this costume addition. Overall, it seems like he was a good man, trapped in a terrible situation, forced to become something other than himself in order to survive. By the end of it, he was in too deep to escape, but at least went out as himself.
Sam Rockwell's character turn is so great. So subtle and well foreshadowed throughout the film.
Taika Watiti managed to make a film that had just enough comedy to not make the film morbid and dark, but still fit in all the reasons why the Nazis were terrible and should be scorned from history
Something i really love about that movie, his imaginary friend Hitler is evolving with the state of the war, where he is less friendly and more of a dick over time. It's like his mind clear more and more of the propaganda over time, until he get rid of him ! It's like the death of childhood too...When you think about it, it's genius ! Also i love that they show how goffy and ridiculous with their image the Nazi were really with Sam Rockwell and his crazy outfit at the end...There is a reason why the Nazi were not taken seriously for a while by the rest of the world !
It was genius having Taika himself play Hitler, because he literally spent the film making Hitler a joke and I fucking loved it.
It was actually illegal in Germany to make fun of them, because they knew full well how objectively ridiculous they looked.
Taika seriously has never made a bad movie! Hunt for the Wilderpeople is my personal favorite of his.
Thor :Love and Thunder is pretty bad
The officer dude came in during the search and he brought in the mom's bike, meaning he at least knew she was found out and came over to protect Jojo any way he could.

I'm so glad you watched this film Taika Wattia won an Oscar for his screenplay of the book which is based, when I heard he was making this film I thought it was a terrible idea but I was way wrong.
What had me fighting tears and failing was JoJo finally tiring a shoelace' his mother's whilst she hung on the gallows. Absolutely heartbreaking. The most uplifting heartwarming piece is when they danced at the end. Echoing what his mother said about 'freedom' then Bowie's track commenced in German. Bloody perfect! Best film for many a year. He's more like 6'7" or 8".
@@direnova6284 6'7", made a typo
It is adapted from a book called Caging Skies. Waititi converted the story and won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. It's become one of my top movies because it is SO disarming and it is SO layered.
My mother was born and raised in Nazi Germany. She was about JoJos age at the end of the war. And she had Jewish friends and a Jewish name mother, which means she basically has a Jewish name herself. She too, was part of the female equivalent of Hitler Youth, you didn't have options otherwise. My grandfather was conscripted and never came home - indeed we found the first picture we have ever seen of him two weeks ago. Her family members were no fans of the Nazi regime.
Anyway, because her life mirrored JoJos so closely I must say that this movie hits like a wrecking ball. The final scene when the Americans arrive, in particular. My mother has always said that "the day the American tanks rolled into town was the happiest day of my life."
I've heard it said before "the first country the Nazis invaded was Germany." Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
I just recently watched this with a couple friends, and we almost died when we realised "Heil Hitler" was a universal greeting, and then consistently through the rest of the movie
I love how "blinded" the blind wave crew goes for the reactions of movies and shows. Rick missed a good one btw.
I think Calvin just said at the beginning that Rick already seen the movie.
When I watched this my friend and I said that Jojo and Yorkie need to play young Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in a movie. They are the perfect little dopplegangers for them and need to be in a movie.
Sam Rockwell = 5'9" tall. Stephen Merchant = 6'7" tall. So, not two feet although it would look like a lot if standing next to each other. They still manipulated it in the shot to make it more extreme.
Such a great movie. Perfect blend of humor and seriousness. Many emotions felt throughout.
