Edward was my obsession during my teenaged years, actually from 12 years of age onward. I swear, every pick scrape, harmonic, flange (how bout that flange pick scrape at the end of Bottom's up!), pull off, mute, etc. is embedded in my DNA. I remember that off the cuff, unaccompanied solo at the beginning of Fools, blowing my mind. You could HEAR the strength in his left hand, the way he squeezed out these flurries of notes. Always will be the KING!
How about hearing the strength in his left hand on all of Spanish Fly! I mean those tapped harmonics on the higher strings are tough to sound on an acoustic, then there’s all that tapping and legato on an acoustic. And to think he didn’t just play that, he wrote it too

I had the good fortune of having my dad retire at March AFB in '72 so my early teen years were in SoCal and by '75 I was addicted to guitar and as fate would have it a buddy's uncle told us about this band he saw called Mammoth in LA and said remember the name Van Halen cause this guy Eddie will blow the world away! R.I.P. to arguably the greatest ever and thanks for another trip down memory lane🤘
I’m sure we can all relate to the shock and loss you’re feeling. This was one of the toughest losses for me. He was a superhero of my childhood and even if you never meet these people they have profound impacts on your life. Eddie never ever disappointed with the material he produced. Incredible icon. We’ll never see his like again.
It’s hard to lose our musical idols and as we get older, we will eventually lose them all. It’s tough. Randy Rhoads was a tough one for me, Marley, Cobain, Stevie Ray, Jeff Healey, Layne Staley, Chester, the list goes on. And now EVH. Yes it’s sad but thanks to people like you David, we are reminded of our past and present hero’s and forgotten bands. They may be gone but you keep their spirit alive in every vid. My first album was 1984 and I bought it on my seventh birthday. I still have it! Hopefully with Eddie's passing it will bring back a passion for the electric guitar in music. 2022 and still hard to believe every is gone. His playing was so influential on me and so many others. He gave me so many ideas to draw upon and the inspiration to take what he did and try to make my own version. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's pure crap, but I love doing it, and without Eddie, I'm not sure I would have ever picked up a guitar. RIP eddie van halen.

Great rant! So informative! I was 15 when Van Halen debut album came out and music hasn’t been the same since. He was the last great rock guitarist. He was the right hand of G-d and Hendrix was the left hand. As brilliant as they come and taken from us too soon.
Another tip to getting harmonics to just "Jump" out of the guitar is to use a graphic or parametric eq to boost 800hz frequencies... this will bring out the "even-order" (or 2nd order) harmonics. You don't need to get into Dimebag Darrell or Stryper territory... but you'll find that boosting those frequencies really helps those harmonics to pop.
EVH was an innovator, a pioneer, and a true original. His songwriting was probably his greatest strength, and when combined with his creative genius approach to soloing and experimental tinkering he was just so revolutionary. RIP, Ed - your influence will live forever. You are the reason I play electric guitar!

I had been going over what I partly learned years ago but making a better effort. All this info helps. It is the best electric guitar knowledge as far as I can tell. DUDE! This is what I have most wanted to focus on since Ed died. I’ve been playing 34 years. With only a cursory employment of Ed’s signature moves because they are *his*. Now I’m taking it as a responsibility to master them. Thanks dude. You pretty much headshrunk EVERYTHING in 30 minutes. ❤️
The elephant trick was always so cool. I remember a video on VHS I had in the 90’s of Curt Mitchell showing a tapped harmonic section during the chorus of Dance the Night Away. It was a single line tapped on the B and A chords and it was so hard for me to learn. Slapping the chords for the breakdown wasn’t too bad but I’ll always remember that “impossible” for me line. I’ll have to track it down after I work on your lesson and see if it’s still as hard as I remember. Great video.

Thank you very much for this analysis. Eddie's open harmonics have until now been a little bit of a mystery to me. He used them so melodically. I was not prepared for his passing as you said and it took me a few days to be able to function again. So this is nice to take a closer look at the great things he did.
Since the news of Eddie passing I have read, watched and learned about a true American legend. Years ago I read 3 books about Eddie and the band which gave me a perspective on the early rise to prominence. Still so many things to read, watch and listen to that I enjoy but in a way it just reminds me of what we all lost. The pain is real and we all feel the loss. I bought a EVH guitar which I had wanted for about 2 years but put off. Now was the time. It seemed only right to have one produced before he passed. A run that he had a say in what was produced. Some may think that is not important but if you feel it is then it is. Keep the legend with us! Thanks for the EVH content!
I love this. First riff I got deep with after Eddie passed was Top Jimmy. The one area I’ve been laser focused on was his use of stretch licks: Ice Cream Man, The Full Bug, Beat It, etc.

You get locking trem guitar as a kid to do all the tricks but avoid learning so many songs because of tuning issues. "5150" and "Unchained" was unknown territory because it was a pain to tune back and forth! And thanks for solving the "Top Jimmy" mystery.
like everyone here i grew up wanting to play like Eddie and never really could, best I could manage was a note for note copy but could never really pull off sounding like him even after 30 years of playing. Vai said this best about Eddie Van Halen... “I could never play like him,” Vai admits. “I never really tried. Only an idiot competes with Eddie Van Halen. in another article he says Eddie would visit him after he was done Roth and one day he just picked up my Guitar which was all setup for me, levels, pedels etc and the moment he started playing, Vai said, it sounded 100% Edward and he then knew Eddies tone was all in his fingers.....had nothing to do with guitars, amps, pedals and every other bit of garb marketing teams dream up.

Everyone knew Eddie was sick but I thought he was just keeping his head low and just taking it easy. I came in my house and my wife of 30 years came up to me with a weird look and said "I don't know how to tell you this," I was like "What?" "Eddie Van Halen died today". I felt sick. I felt my stomach drop and I felt like I was going to throw up. My wife knows I've been an EVH freak even before we got together. She hugged me and in the shock of it all I started crying. I couldn't believe it, I still can't. Awesome lesson today, Thank you! R.I.P. to The King!!!!

My first concert ever as a kid was Van Halen and AC/DC when they played at the Day on the Green in 78'. So many of my friends who played guitar went ape shit over Eddie, and while I did as well, the phenomena was so huge at that time that I shied away from learning more than a few of his solos. But I never shied away from the techniques, precision, and *especially his amazing sense of rhythm* because that would have been a huge failure on my part. R.I.P Eddie!

Really great lesson. When I was kid I thought the other tapped melody in Dance the Night Away was a keyboard in the background until I saw him do it live. Women In Love is another great Ex. Tapped intro chord arpeggios, and natural harmonics as chord extensions in the descending progression. Thanks for Top Jimmy. I similar to you just never got around to figuring it out. Eddie wasn’t really know for alternate tunings other than all strings down a semitone or drop 6th down a whole.

i dig your show man. you are definitely underrated and deserve way more views and subscribers. i like the small channels though. it keeps it real. i Loved Eddie man, he was for sure one of my main influences as a guitarist. id say he specifically taught me how to be original and just explore what you can do and create on the guitar just by using what you have...he was the most creative! thank you very much for putting out this video:) being born in 1991 my first CD i ever purchased was Van Halen's Greatest Hits Vol 1. released in 1996 but im sure i was about 9 or 10 years old when i picked that one up with my birthday money...i listened to that whole album non stop i shit you not and put ERUPTION on replay constantly, some nights i would just fall asleep listening to it with my headphones on. I spent the last few weeks before Edward passed away studying and learning the solo to feel your love tonight. (Page 73 in your VH 1 songbook) and really digging how he started phrases on the last beat of the previous bar. In other words not starting the phrase on the one but on the 4 or the "and" of 4 before the next bar. Just that subtle rhythmic displacement that keeps things interesting. I was literally sitting on my couch thinking about this when the phone lit up with the news. Within about 3 min I was on a slight rollercoaster. I know we all experienced that. I thought of Wolfgang and Alex, his wife Janie, Valerie Bertinelli, Mike, Dave, Sammy and well of course everyone who ever knew or worked with him. Then I could almost feel the collective anguish of the "guitar community". I live in San Diego so I knew there were about a million people up the road in LA that were feeling what I felt at that moment. Well anyway I guess that's my little blues jam. Eddie was also the reason I wanted to play guitar so the joy and fun of learning and playing an instrument was initially sparked by those crazy sounds I first heard in 1979. Thanks for your video and channel, lots of great stuff to learn. P.s. Jimmy Herring would be my next request.
I remember my Father had Van Halen's first Album on Vinyl when it first came out and I was like 9 years old I remember playing eruption over and over in complete amazement! The King is gone and never will be forgotten.
There's still another subject that very few talk about and is the tuning wizardry happening in practically every album: Each guitar string has different pitches cents above or below of what an Eb tuned guitar "should" be. And furthermore different on every song on the same album. Not talking about the b string tuned for "perfect" 3rds: It's more nuts than that. We'll be still decoding Eddie for many years. the elephant trick was fun to learn. the trick is using the volume pot as you are uncompressing the already compressed whammybar, and even pulling up on the bar for added effect and pressing back down at the end. its a kind of complicated process to get it to sound right. even eddie had to try twice to get it.
Great video dude. I’ve been playing over twenty years and I’m a huge VH fan. At 14:33 the pentatonic run, you are only the second person I’ve ever heard explain that. Gave me a flashback to being a teen.

Received his auto graphed diver down cassette, signed in person at the service station cold water/venture blvd Unocal/76 station. Valerie also was there with him on occasion. Master ase mechanic knew Eddie, us kids who worked there during the summer months met many good people like Eddie. He was consistently nice, as well as Barbara Eden who was a weekly, twice weekly customer. Cant remember her not smiling, surprisingly friendly, also didn't let her fame enlarge her head. Down to earth was an understatement. Charleton hesten was also a weekly customer there, legacy, also very cool guy. Forgot more towards the screen, than most will ever know.
Would've loved to see you play that tapped harmonic intro to "Mean Street", especially the very beginning where EVH alternates slapping the fretboard with his pick hand thumb and fingers.
Awesome video! I think Eddie's harmonics really stood out because he had that high end cranked combined with his right hand technique that allowed him to control the high end with his right hand muting vs "digging in" and he was a master this technique amongst many others

Fools was my favorite to jam with on that album too! Just soft, then loud, raw, commanding - couldn't turn it up loud enough.

Another tip to getting harmonics to just "Jump" out of the guitar is to use a graphic or parametric eq to boost 800hz frequencies... this will bring out the "even-order" (or 2nd order) harmonics. You don't need to get into Dimebag Darrell or Stryper territory... but you'll find that boosting those frequencies really helps those harmonics to pop.
EVH was an innovator, a pioneer, and a true original. His songwriting was probably his greatest strength, and when combined with his creative genius approach to soloing and experimental tinkering he was just so revolutionary. RIP, Ed - your influence will live forever. You are the reason I play electric guitar!

The elephant trick was always so cool. I remember a video on VHS I had in the 90’s of Curt Mitchell showing a tapped harmonic section during the chorus of Dance the Night Away. It was a single line tapped on the B and A chords and it was so hard for me to learn. Slapping the chords for the breakdown wasn’t too bad but I’ll always remember that “impossible” for me line. I’ll have to track it down after I work on your lesson and see if it’s still as hard as I remember. Great video.

Thank you very much for this analysis. Eddie's open harmonics have until now been a little bit of a mystery to me. He used them so melodically. I was not prepared for his passing as you said and it took me a few days to be able to function again. So this is nice to take a closer look at the great things he did.

Since the news of Eddie passing I have read, watched and learned about a true American legend. Years ago I read 3 books about Eddie and the band which gave me a perspective on the early rise to prominence. Still so many things to read, watch and listen to that I enjoy but in a way it just reminds me of what we all lost. The pain is real and we all feel the loss. I bought a EVH guitar which I had wanted for about 2 years but put off. Now was the time. It seemed only right to have one produced before he passed. A run that he had a say in what was produced. Some may think that is not important but if you feel it is then it is. Keep the legend with us! Thanks for the EVH content!
I love this. First riff I got deep with after Eddie passed was Top Jimmy. The one area I’ve been laser focused on was his use of stretch licks: Ice Cream Man, The Full Bug, Beat It, etc.

You get locking trem guitar as a kid to do all the tricks but avoid learning so many songs because of tuning issues. "5150" and "Unchained" was unknown territory because it was a pain to tune back and forth!

like everyone here i grew up wanting to play like Eddie and never really could, best I could manage was a note for note copy but could never really pull off sounding like him even after 30 years of playing. Vai said this best about Eddie Van Halen...

in another article he says Eddie would visit him after he was done Roth and one day he just picked up my Guitar which was all setup for me, levels, pedels etc and the moment he started playing, Vai said, it sounded 100% Edward and he then knew Eddies tone was all in his fingers.....had nothing to do with guitars, amps, pedals and every other bit of garb marketing teams dream up.

Everyone knew Eddie was sick but I thought he was just keeping his head low and just taking it easy. I came in my house and my wife of 30 years came up to me with a weird look and said "I don't know how to tell you this," I was like "What?" "Eddie Van Halen died today". I felt sick. I felt my stomach drop and I felt like I was going to throw up. My wife knows I've been an EVH freak even before we got together. She hugged me and in the shock of it all I started crying. I couldn't believe it, I still can't. Awesome lesson today, Thank you! R.I.P. to The King!!!!

My first concert ever as a kid was Van Halen and AC/DC when they played at the Day on the Green in 78'. So many of my friends who played guitar went ape shit over Eddie, and while I did as well, the phenomena was so huge at that time that I shied away from learning more than a few of his solos. But I never shied away from the techniques, precision, and *especially his amazing sense of rhythm* because that would have been a huge failure on my part. R.I.P Eddie!

One of my favorites was we'd all been up all night, so when we got there I fell asleep on the field and slept through the first band or two, but woke up to the most amazing guitar playing I'd ever heard. When I stood up I saw this tiny blonde dude with a polka-dot flying V tearing up the entire stadium. Only time I got to see Randy, but I won't ever forget that day.

Really great lesson. When I was kid I thought the other tapped melody in Dance the Night Away was a keyboard in the background until I saw him do it live. Women In Love is another great Ex. Tapped intro chord arpeggios, and natural harmonics as chord extensions in the descending progression. Thanks for Top Jimmy. I similar to you just never got around to figuring it out. Eddie wasn’t really know for alternate tunings other than all strings down a semitone or drop 6th down a whole.

What a fabulous lesson Dave - thank you - Eddie was the reason I stuck at learning to play the guitar and see it as fun - I doubt I would have recorded ,gigged or pursued it were it not for his fantastic positive influence - this lesson is just a snap shot of the techniques along with musical and equipment innovations Edward brought to the world. I spent the last few weeks before Edward passed away studying and learning the solo to feel your love tonight. (Page 73 in your VH 1 songbook) and really digging how he started phrases on the last beat of the previous bar. In other words not starting the phrase on the one but on the 4 or the "and" of 4 before the next bar. Just that subtle rhythmic displacement that keeps things interesting. I was literally sitting on my couch thinking about this when the phone lit up with the news. Within about 3 min I was on a slight rollercoaster. I know we all experienced that. I thought of Wolfgang and Alex, his wife Janie, Valerie Bertinelli, Mike, Dave, Sammy and well of course everyone who ever knew or worked with him. Then I could almost feel the collective anguish of the "guitar community". I live in San Diego so I knew there were about a million people up the road in LA that were feeling what I felt at that moment. Well anyway I guess that's my little blues jam. Eddie was also the reason I wanted to play guitar so the joy and fun of learning and playing an instrument was initially sparked by those crazy sounds I first heard in 1979. Thanks for your video and channel, lots of great stuff to learn. P.s. Jimmy Herring would be my next request.

There's still another subject that very few talk about and is the tuning wizardry happening in practically every album: Each guitar string has different pitches cents above or below of what an Eb tuned guitar "should" be. And furthermore different on every song on the same album. Not talking about the b string tuned for "perfect" 3rds: It's more nuts than that. We'll be still decoding Eddie for many years. Good job Dave.

the elephant trick was fun to learn. the trick is using the volume pot as you are uncompressing the already compressed whammybar, and even pulling up on the bar for added effect and pressing back down at the end. its a kind of complicated process to get it to sound right. even eddie had to try twice to get it.

Received his auto graphed diver down cassette, signed in person at the service station cold water/venture blvd Unocal/76 station. Valerie also was there with him on occasion. Master ase mechanic knew Eddie, us kids who worked there during the summer months met many good people like Eddie. He was consistently nice, as well as Barbara Eden who was a weekly, twice weekly customer. Cant remember her not smiling, surprisingly friendly, also didn't let her fame enlarge her head. Down to earth was an understatement. Charleton hesten was also a weekly customer there, legacy, also very cool guy. Forgot more towards the screen, than most will ever know.

Awesome video! I think Eddie's harmonics really stood out because he had that high end cranked combined with his right hand technique that allowed him to control the high end with his right hand muting vs "digging in" and he was a master this technique amongst many others
