    With the repeated use of thoughts and prayers this whole episode actually seems like a perfect analogy for American gun culture. There is no enemy only your own weapons with the algorithm (read politicians and their gun manufactorer masters) ensuring just enough people keep dying to keep people buying.

    Moffat is amazing at taking simple ideas and concepts and turning them into tension ratcheting episodes. One offs like this are where he’s super super strong.
    iirc the military company Villengard has been mentioned a long while back. Also quite odd that Munday was played by Varada Sethu who is supposed to join as a companion next season. Wonder if it’s some Clara-esque shenanigans.
    But yeah great episode. Probably my favorite of the season so far.

    • @OlaBetiku

      Moffat used a war episode to introduce Captain Jack... He may have just used this recent war episode to introduce Mundy Flynn... .

    • @thysens
      @thysens 22 дні тому +2

      Villengard is the planet featured in the middle of the universe (and also the middle of _Twice Upon A Time_ ) where Rusty the Dalek was holed up. According to the wiki, it might’ve been first mentioned in _The Doctor Dances_ though, as the creators of Jack’s “squareness gun”.
      Also interesting to note (as they did in the video) that this Anglican military is similar but seemingly separate to the eventual Church of the Silence (of the Papal Mainframe), featured in S5’s angel two-parter, _A Good Man Goes To War_ , and _Time of the Doctor_ .

    Susan Twist plays Susan Triad in the last episode. S. Triad is an anagram of TARDIS. Could it be when the Doctor duplicated the Tardis in a previous episode that somehow freed part of the essence of the Tardis and that has been shadowing him ever since?

    "Fleshlight!" (GROANS :)) DAMN!!! EARLY in the morning!!! (But Moffat's return is worth it, right?) And hey, little kids can be annoying!!! LOL!!! THANKS!!!
    (From AI: “What will survive of us is love” is the last line of Philip Larkin's poem 'An Arundel Tomb.' The poem was written in 1956 and published in 1964 in Larkin's collection The Whitsun Weddings. It describes the poet's reaction to seeing a 14th-century tomb in Chichester Cathedral that features two stone effigies of an earl and countess. The poem follows the sculptures as they corrode over the centuries.")
    As you point out, NOT A SPOILER exactly, BUT.... The "Andor" actress playing the soldier will join our TARDIS duo in Season 15 (or 2).

    This felt like a good ol' classic Doctor Who episode. And I don't mean "classic" as in 60s-90s, but classic as in, it feels like the show has felt, regardless of Doctor and companion. One of those "normal" but decent and memorable episodes, and very Doctor Who.
    I loved it for that reason. I haven't felt that vibe for many years. Yes, there's been some spectacular episodes since, The Giggle, is in my top five all time episodes, but this episode, even though not a favourite, felt more like Doctor Who than The Giggle.

    The hive-mind of fandom immediately retreated to Tom Baker's Doctor standing on a landmine - so it was hardly a surprise when Moffat himself stated this as his chief influence. And that throws up an interesting point. I believe at this point he is probably one of the show's greatest writers; easily up there with Terry Nation or Robert Holmes (or even Douglas Adams). And it's nice to have his version of future continuity (the Anglican Church as the military - 'Onward Christian Soldiers, marching us to war' as we used to sing in school assembly) dropped into the modern series. It means we are not totally adrift from the past as many naysayers like to think.

    Honestly this story was fine. Im not a big fan of Steven Moffat’s script, there not proper dw for me (sorry bit of a classic who purist sadly) but at least this script was good and I thought Ncuti Gatwa was really good in this story

    You can ignore all those silly pro-faith comments the Doctor made at the end. Steven Moffat is an atheist. Well-done Steven.

    The ending was very awkward. The Doctor acted like no one had just been killed and then hugged some people he had just met.

      People get killed around the doctor constantly, he wasn't at fault for any of the deaths idk why you expected him to breakdown crying, plus he just escaped a mine, he's obviously happy he's alive

      @@kadegetslaid634 I don't expect him to break down crying. I do expect him to read the room and not to glory in his own rescue and to not acknowledge the people just killed.
      I don't think the Doctor brushes off death as easily as you think. He was worried about a snot monster a few episodes ago.

    I sadly wasn’t wowed by this episode. It didn’t seem very fresh I guess as it felt a bit familiar and a few times I found myself annoyed with some of the characters. It was… ok but shockingly I briefly wondered if Space Babies was a better episode. This episode has a better tone & premise… but for me it’s meh at best.

      Huh? Tbh I felt this was a very unique episode and it gave the Doctor genuine fear

    • @tempusspiritus
      @tempusspiritus 22 дні тому +2

      @@kobeangelesd I liked the premise to an extent and I suppose it wasn’t super similar to any previous Doctor Who episodes yet whether it was small similarities to other Doctor Who episodes(Oxygen, Sorcerer’s Apprentice, maybe The Idiots Lantern) or other shows it just didn’t feel like a fresh idea. I mean at the very least we’ve had an episode about an evil corporation who kills via technology in order to maximize profits before(Oxygen), though the greedy weapon dealers was the only part of the premise I liked, and that episode was 10x better.
      I sadly found some of the characters annoying such as Splice who appeared too old to act the way she did and the whole thing about them being too stupid to realize they’re fighting a nonexistent enemy is beyond ridiculous. There’s stupid and then there’s brain dead. It also doesn’t help that the Doctor spends the entire episode on top of a landmine as we know he can’t die so it eventually becomes yawn inducing. Also, a small(er) nitpick is I would have appreciated a line about the sonic not being capable of deactivating the landmine rather than nobody bringing it up. This is an even smaller nitpick but while I loved The Devil’s Chord(wasn’t a fan of the ending) and I enjoyed The Church on Ruby Road including the musical number I found myself weirdly irritated to hear the Doctor singing. At this point we’ve had singing in almost every episode and in this one it felt a little forced.

    Firstly this is the same writer who wrote 'Blink' so how the mighty have fallen talk about a cheap version of Midnight! Diznee money drying up or being saved?. Second there is literally no Jeopardy as the Doctor is not going to die! This series is terrible. I wanted the mine to go off and blow him up as that would have at least been interesting! What no song and dance routine at the end? LOL This series is awful so far... :/
