This the perfect technique for planting a tree. Excellent work. I am glad you mentioned about skimming the grass off the top. So many times we just start digging the hole then we go back and try to remove the grass to get the native soil. I just planted a 15 gallon Sweet Bay Magnolia and I wished I had seen your video first. This is one of the best video's out here for planting tree. Thanks for your work!

Great video sir! Have you ever planted a crepe myrtle like that one and split it into two single trunks and it has been successful to grow? I'm asking because my older daughter wants single crepe myrtles in her yard. Thank you.
Hi Nick! It depends on the plant. Sometimes double stem crape myrtles are in fact two separate plants and therefore, the stems can be separated and replanted as individual trees. And sometimes, the double stem crape myrtle is a single plant that has produced two stems and therefore should not be separated. If the two stems in a double stem crape myrtle are really far away from one another, this can be an indication that they are from two separate plants. While they are less common, single stem crape myrtles do exist and can be purchased, as well.
Andy How far apart should the trees (5-10') be planted from each other. I am looking to add three in the front yard opposite the sidewalk near street.
Hi there! @wk4240 gave great advice. Varieties have different maximum widths that should be taken into consideration. If you plant them distanced on center at their maximum width, the canopies will eventually touch, but it will take a long time. If you want them to touch sooner, plant them closer and vice versa.

Hi! I wish we could, but it was a stock song that was provided with the video editing software we used. Unfortunately, I don't know the information for it.
What software was used? I ask because this video was sent to me by my mom for my eagle project of planting 9 trees and I really enjoy the song.
Would it be possible to separate those two trunks if I just want a single trunk? It looks like there was a sucker that grew up.
That is not something that is impossible to achieve, but with the crape myrtle's root system, it is very difficult to separate two trunks once they are grown into each other like the one we planted. This is something that would need to be done at the beginning stages of a crape myrtle's life span.

If I transplant a crepe myrtle in winter when it's dormant should I water it at all?
Usually one good watering to settle the soil around the roots is all that is necessary during a dormant season planting!
What kind of fertilizer did you use?
Hi there! We typically use Espoma's Bio-Tone for the first feeding/when we install a tree and Espoma's Holly-Tone for future feedings. In this video, Andy is using Holly-Tone, but that is not our normal practice for the installation fertilization.

Why Holly Tone?
Hi Emmarie, we recommend Holly-tone because it is an organic fertilizer and therefore, it has the nutrients the plant wants and it improves the soil. In this video, Andy is using Holly-tone which is fine, but we typically recommend Bio-tone for first plantings and Holly-tone for future plant feedings. We recommend and use this brand of fertilizer (Espoma) specifically because they are a reputable company and we have been using them for years with great success. In addition these fertilizers are acidic and therefore work best with our local soil which also tends to be acidic.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I am a very experienced garden hobbyist. This video shows a man that has been doing this a long time and knows how to use the few hand tools he has to make things work.
