      Hello Carey what a wonderful memory to have of your tree! I can picture that in my mind now with the colorful blossoms in your hair as a child. How sweet!!!! Your most welcome my man. As i was thinking about the large row that lined one of the sidewalks we all took to the only store close as kids i remembered a few more things which were that these trees not bushes were multitrunked but were at that time 15 ' feet tall but were not limbed up so the lowest limbs covered the sidewalks, which is why as friends of the owners children we all played in each others yards we would be uproariously had the flowers stuck in our hair. Probably barely even noticed. Lol. Bringing back those memories for me helped me focus on some other important pieces of my love of gardening and how beautiful things were to me . I was able to retrieve those images for myself. 😘

    • @careyjohnston4176
      @careyjohnston4176 Рік тому +1

      And to add that this was 40 years ago. Since then people started trimming back their crepes to encourage larger flower panicles but didnt understand the damage that was being caused by fungus and viruses attacking their crepes. If we had only known. I believe that with the advent of internet which i have only had use of for 3 years we will become better stewards of the botanical life we ignor to our detriment.

    Your Myrtles are beautiful. Our trees begin to leaf out in late April and blooms begin about 5-6 weeks later. They are used abundantly by landscape developers throughout Central and South Florida. Most of the time they are cut way back each February. The Naturalist call it Crape Murder! I have one in the front yard (mauve) and 2 in the back yard ( mauve and raspberry)
    I love your reds! Watermelon is the color I would call those. Gorgeous.

    Thank you. So glad you chose myrtle for today's video! We have so many crepe myrtles on our property, ranging in size, the largest probably 25' or so. In our yard they do not bloom as much if not pruned. (I don't have the greenest of thumbs,) I am not sure if our myrtles here in the US are related to the myrtles in scripture, but I like to think they are .
    Isaiah 55:13: “Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and
    instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to
    the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign [that] shall not be cut

      @@GardenHappy You're welcome! I was just thinking though, since seeing your video I may just put one muskogee heavy bloomer in the big space in my front yard since they grow huge. On the plant it says it grows 20ft tall. I was going to put two in that empty space but didn't realize how big the tree gets until watching your video,

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy  4 місяці тому +2

      I think you would be smart to just put one in that space. Reason why is, the more sun, they get the better they grow and bloom, and I would worry that the one tree closest to the sun might shade the second tree. And then you would have one tree growing a little bit larger and the other one a little smaller. I’ve seen people do that many times. They plant the crêpe myrtle trees in a row, and they end up being different heights.👍👍👍 nevertheless, in my opinion, I think you selected the most gorgeous color!!! 💜💜💜Liz

      Hi Garden Happy, hope you're having a lovely and sunny day. Have a question. I have two sioux crape myrtles pink/lavender which I just plant about 1 month and the trees are growing nice, I'm tempting to plant a Yoshino cherry tree or a kousa dogwood with them together (I have enough room) in the front yard. Can you give me your honest opinion? I always like to hear other one's opinion, it's always a teaching tool for me. I'm just a beginner with the garden. Thank you very much!

    Crepe Myrtle are actually trees in most climates without the chopping back by gardeners and landscapers . A variety in North Carolina can easily reach 60' without interference by chopping it back every year . They are a species that is from South America i believe but Lagerstroemia being the botanical name for genus. I tend to use the botanical name for genus because many different places have specific regional names for the plants . Love your video you caught them at the height of flowering. Your voice is very calming.

They are sending me 5 small flowering bushes, 5 colorado spruce I think (that I'll be giving away to friends because they get too big!), and "2 crape myrtles" and they are sending them closer to May or so....maybe late April so I'll get to see what they are when they arrive. I loved all the Myrtle’s. Would like to grow the black diamond white in shrub form but I wonder if when prunes the limbs would get all knotty.

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy  17 днів тому +2

      I think the black diamond is a beautiful tree. The reason why crêpe myrtle trees get big knots on them is because people prune them back too far. If you prune it lightly, it will not do that. But I know what you’re talking about when they get knotty they look so horrible. That is not a typical trait of the tree that is because of people pruning it too much. No not really, when the flowers drop they leave a colorful little blanket on the ground but they are so small they just decompose with the dirt.
