    Best explanation I’ve heard on caster, camber and how the changes affect the kart. Don’t suppose you could do more of these? Front and rear track width, axle stiffness, ride height, torsion bars would all be amazing

    What is caster? What does it look like on a kart? What does negative caster look like on a kart? What is camber? What does camber look like? I’m sure this is a fantastic video on how to adjust caster and camber, but it doesn’t explain what they are, or what they look like, or why the adjustments make a difference. Forward, backwards, positive, negative, up, down, jump around.

    Great video! Just bought my first kart, Intrepid with Rok 100cc tag. Shop set front end at "neutral" i assume as I don't have the castor camber adjuster with the many little holes. Just an almost flat washer. Does this sound normal to you? I haven't driven a kart in a few years. Thanks!

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  4 роки тому +1

      yep, if you are new, just get to the track and get some K's into you body. the guys at the shop would have set it up for you. the intrepid has an after market adjuster you can buy with the holes in it for castor and camber changes, but you probs won't need them for now. the standard flat ones are most likely the standard 'centre pils' without any 'eccentric'

    Hello from the US.
    How would you tune for a multi surface race track? We have a mixture of new asphalt, old asphalt and concrete.
    And when you say negative vs. positive camber... I've always assumed you'd always be negative (tops of tires closest to each other) vs positive (tops furthest away). I always thought the only reason to use positive camber was on oval tracks :)

    So caster can help front grip, dig the tyres into the ground. And positive camber can hep turn in? Positive camber will gove more grip and negative will release it?

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  3 роки тому +2

      to some degree yes. positive for me helps the kart turn in more (relatively) and negative reduces the entry turn, and helps the kart drive to the exit. neither is perfect for every track/tyre/ambient conditions etc etc so have a play around and see if that works for you too. hope that isn't too vague.

      Dominick Cassara they should be ideally. However I have seen a one hole variation across the kart without the chassis being bent. Just double check your castor angle with the steel ruler in the vertical position like we do in this video. If that’s within 1 mm and your camber is within 0.5mm and you have one hole difference, you should be sweet.

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  2 роки тому

      Hey Jordan, tough question. I have only ever been to 1 track that is concrete so I'm not 100% sure. Normally you have high area on concrete over bitumen. so the kart front tyres should grip well. if that is the case then some extra NEG might help the kart from the Apex to Exit, and stop the kart from bogging down at the Apex ripple strip. hard one for me to comment on. Which track are you racing at that is concrete?

    Does camber affects opposite in race cars? Because as far as I know adding negative camber to the front gives more front grip. But in go karts as you said positive camber will give more grip.

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  3 роки тому +3

      well I'm not 100% sure in the car game. neg will delay the steering a fraction on the way into the corner. Pos camber makes the kart a little more reactive. these are generalisations, use a little for practise and document the results and you will be on your way to successful front end camber set ups

    • @PowerRepublic

      Hey Luis, what type of kart do you have? Most kart rims are 5" diameter and their bolt patterns are the same, the exception some CRG wheels have a different internal spigot diameter. If you have a Tony Kart, they have heaps of different rims available to suit all conditions so I would recommend sticking with an OTK rim.

      On otk aka tony kart you can get 0 pills to split the difference. It's just a pill with the bearing set dead in the center with no adjustment so you are not all the way forward or all the way back your in between the 2. You can run it top or bottom with the same effect you just have to rotate the arrow on the other pill 180. Technically it changes wheelbase but I usually run 0 pills on the bottom as it's quicker to change it without pulling the kingpin. Other manufactures make castor fully adjustable ie you can move the kingpin forward or backwards the full range without effecting camber.

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  5 років тому +1

      Hi Denny,
      -Check first that the ride height is the exact same on the front stab axles.
      - Next check that you have the exact same Castor set up i.e both arrows forward on a Tony Kart, not one forward and one backwards.
      - Next up if all those things are good, check for a bent kart or cracked chassis near the rear bearing hangers.
      - If you remove the side pods, nose cone and wheels, you can lay an axle across the kingpins at the front of the kart and eyeball the straightness against the back axle in the kart (this is surprisingly accurate way to gauge if a kart has a twist in it)
      Once you have checked all those things and they are perfect, buy 4 reasonably priced bathroom scales and place one under each of your wheels on a flat surface. Sit in the kart with your gear on and with an assistant, measure all the corner weights and compare.
      Then write me back and tell me what was wrong or if you need further instructions.
      Derek

    My question is I'm running a 2016/17 FA and found with MG tires (F400 that's Honda390cc) that the kart wasn't undriveable but extremely heavy on the front end. So after 7 laps you not focusing on the apex anymore but rather focusing on how you need to turn the steering wheel. We backed off the caster but even compared to my CRG Blackstar it felt heavier with no caster versus the CRG running 2 or 3 lines of caster.Do you know what the standard built in caster is on the 16/17 OTK karts as looking the FA looks identical to the Tonykart Racer and Kosmic Mercury chassis and question 2 has this changed on the OTK Karts at all?The Caster cambers washers have 1 dot so I think that's standardI also felt the angle of the steering wheel probably made it worse as I run the steering wheel in the standard position.

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  4 роки тому +1

      Hi phil, start with a brand new set of tyres and standard castor/camber (arrow forward top and bottom). i think the heaviness in steering is more than likely stuffed tyres which is super common with old MG reds. Then if you have any dramas report back.
      AFAIK the newer tony karts are unchanged when i measure them at work with the snipers. Birel have more in build castor and i think the CRG have a bit more too, but most chassis you can change the castor to suit your needs.

      Thanks D
      We are running the MG hards as we are more of an endurance based series.
      Normally we don't have issues with the front end on karts. It's trying to keep up with the rear end from either having to much grip or during the day the rear becoming tail happy.
      What we did find by taking the caster off was we took away the lift on the inside wheel. However the chassis was still quick but our engine lacked bottom end torque.
      Would you run a cut axle?
      We tried an OTK medium cut.
      Also some guys run the left carrier bearing facing outwards and the right one facing inwards which I always thought you must keep them the same. Facing out they do harden the axle right?
      We do find that our chassis tend to crack around the engine so I put a 0.3mm bar into the chassis with the length from the carrier mount up to where the sidepod bar is welded on.
      I was told this shouldn't affect the rail in terms of handling.
      I'm not sure if anyone has had experience with the hard MG tires but during the ladt heat 2hr race I started getting a horrible feeling through the steering wheel which felt like a terrible vibration.
      Checked everything like rear bearings, axle and front bearings, rosejoints and that the Stub axle was tight and bearings were ok and found no problem.
      Can tires cause a horrible vibration as we need to run these tires one more race event?

      - maybe the tyres are out of balance causing vibration?
      -The extra tube will stiffen the chassis rail slightly. maybe slide one into the other side to even it up?
      - if your not lifting the inside wheel without the castor then you will drag the inside rear around the corners creating drag.
      - the bearings come standard one in and one out. just leave that for now. changing axles is not easy to do over the internet. Try the weight balance first, then try the extra tube in the other side. then we can work on other things for you

    So, if we have poor grip, go positive. If we have good grip go negative?

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  5 років тому +3

      Tommy Chaplin if only it was that simple. New tyres, a sticky track, a track with a lot of high speed sweeping corners.....try negative camber.
      Not brand new tyres, slippery and/or cold tracks, short stop start corners....then try positive camber.
      I like my karts, when perfect balanced, to be able run as close to neutral camber and castor as possible.

    Any tips on making the steering lighter for a guy with 20kg of added weight on the kart while keeping a fairly high caster?

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  5 років тому

      Jono Dalton a few questions, how old is your kart? Do you have to keep max castor? Top holes on the steering bell can lighten the feel of the steering wheel. However the kart is probably under steering if it feels to heavy. Otherwise if the karts fast like it is, you need to hit the gym and build up the arm strength and ignore all previous suggestions 😃

    • @_jonodalton_
      @_jonodalton_ 5 років тому

      Power Republic karts 2017 and we use a really low grip tyre for racing which makes getting into and through the corner difficult. I’m tiny so I should probably hit the gym which could help take some of the lead off😃 thanks for your help

      Which Tyre and model of kart do you have Jono?

    • @_jonodalton_
      @_jonodalton_ 5 років тому +1

      Power Republic we run maxxis HG1 endurance tyres which could easily last an 8 round season, only problem is they have little grip. I run in a team which makes their own chassis which is the GMS, it is essentially the same as otk but without eccentrics as we have caster inserts on the bottom for different angles and a thread on top which moves the camber side to side.

    • @IggySport1388
      @IggySport1388 5 років тому +1

      Great video Derek, thanks for listening to the viewers. Question on this video though, would having both eccentrics face the same direction top and bottom not be the same thing regardless if they're both facing front or back or any other combination? Secondly if say you want to increase caster but not use full caster, can you say move the top eccentric one/two holes in the full caster direction while doing the exact opposite on the bottom eccentric? This would also keep the built in camber of the chassis as well correct?

      @kasperhansen532 5 років тому

      It’s a Rotax max senior, and the setup would be Great, ‘cause the guys at my track knows a good gearing so just the setup would be good 😊

    • @philipjones4157
      @philipjones4157 4 роки тому +1

      Setup I'm sure would be based on how the kart feels around the track first.
      I'm sure D can advise on a standard setup and from there you would have to adjust according to how the kart is reacting.
      The amount of mileage on the tires will make a difference to the setup.
      Also you should measure the seat distance as that will also allow the guys to understand the balance of the kart a little more.
      We measure from the centre left kingpin to the top of the seat in the middle.
      Should be between 102cm and 106cm.

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  5 років тому +1

      Josh Navarro if it’s fast and flowing coming into the main straight, set kart for that for maximum gains. Then adjust driving to suit the slower twisty section. You can try full castor and add a little bit of pos if your kart is not responsive on corner entry.

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  11 днів тому

      mostly we use the karts in the factory standard position and the adjust more or less after we drive them. that way we can customise the settings for each track/driver/conditions. sorry I don't have a better explanation for you. do you have a particular handling issue you are trying to overcome ?

    I can never work out positive or negative caster or camber, it’s all Chinese to me, I wish someone would explain it to me in simple terms.
    Positive Caster for more grip, Negative Caster for less grip?
    And Camber the same?

    • @PowerRepublic
      @PowerRepublic  5 років тому +2

      Hi Silvana, if it seems confusing, the best thing is to go to the race track and feel it for yourself. Start with a new set of tyres and standard camber and castor. Then adjust your front end to have max Negative camber and write down the results. After that, change to full positive camber, write down what you felt and how the kart reacted and so on and so forth.......

      its common to see the inside edge of most kart tyres wear. maybe use more positive camber after the tyres are worn in.
