I never would've known that Thomas calling Percy a "green caterpillar on wheels" in the series was actually low-key the author quarreling with the illustrator. Also, I love watching these videos. I've been a fan of Thomas & Friends since I was 3, and I'm fascinated to learn more about the franchise as a whole as I get older. I didn't know very much about the Railway Series books as a kid, as I was a lot more invested in the TV series, but I did read some of the books, and found them interesting.
Here's some interesting trivia about the television adaptation of Percy's Promise: 1. It, along with Time for Trouble, were originally planned for the second season. 2. In the original script, the floorboards came from Clarabel as in the original story. Presumably when they finally got a chance to adapt in Season 3, David or Britt realized that was too dark, hence the brakevan.
In the US dub of Percy and the Signal, the narration says that after Percy was reprimanded for his pranks, his encounter with Gordon and James about “backing signals” happens the following day as the narrator says “but the very next day, Percy was still being cheeky”.
So thats where percy got his nickname the green catterpillar with red stripes named after his design by the artist c reginald dalby what the awdry thinks of percys look in the illustrations
For the record, the purpose of a 'backing' signal actually means 'line clear ahead at next signal'. Interestingly I did not base this conclusion on studying railway logistics, but using the expression of how one backs someone up in a case to support them. In this case a 'backing signal' basically performs the same function. Also I believe the screaming audio clip comes from Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining'. Regards, Samuel Farris.
Alli can find is that it's merely an upper quadrant semaphore rather than a lower quadrant semaphore like literally every other signal but this one on Sodor
Percy's Promise was initially planned for season 2. However, the production team could not figure out how to move Percy through the water without damage.
Ooh yes you’re back! The episodes from Percy the Small Engine were pretty faithful to the book, but when I saw 0:42 I still find it insane how different Percy’s TVS model is from his basis
But in the story 'Percy and the Signal', as much as Percy pulled 5 trucks and a brake wagon, in the adaptation he's pulling a brake van and just 3 trucks!
@@NorthWestern1919 Henry def looks different from his basis, but I still think he looks more similar to a Black 5 than Percy does to a Trojan. The shape of Percy’s smokebox, dome, boiler, and cab (at least his TVS model) is way different from his basis
@@stepneybulstrodemusic1761 Yeah, I see your point. Besides, Henry not looking completely like a Black 5 makes sense, as opposed to Percy not looking completely like Trojan, considering Henry was built as a failed hybrid of an A1 and a C1. Besides, both Henry and Percy look more faithful to their real-life counterparts in the RWS. Except for poor C. Reginald Dalby, who, as we all know, portrayed Percy as a little green caterpillar.
Oh, Heck. Oh yes, I love how Awdry wrote about his “green caterpillar” insult 16 years after Dalby left. Percy slowly transitioned from his TVS appearance to his real-life basis’ appearance in the RWS. And yeah, the Henry thing makes sense
It's a shame that Dalby left due to creative differences (though I can understand why from both sides...) Personally I liked Dalby's art the most of the original Railway series' books
Percy was relocated to man goods work on Thomas' branch line, so technically it his branch line as well. The same way BoCo would call his branch line Edward's branch line even though he also runs it. The driver is just saying our because he drove Percy and therfore works on that branch line.
Re: Percy and Harold. The maximum speed of a Sikorsky S55 was about 100 mph. I'd really love to see a Peckett saddletank (which I've always taken Percy to be) beating that, particularly as Harold could surely have flown straight as the crow flies rather than having to follow this twists and turns of the railway.
I find it's a shame that C. Reginald Dalby and Awdry didn't have a good relationship, and Percy The Small Engine was Dalby's last Railway Series book to illustrate. But I think Dalby was the best illustrator because if you look at his Railway Series illustrations, they look almost like photographs because they're painted realistically.
Since david mitton decided to add a brakevan behind annie and clarabel i would imagine clarabel's brakes are to old and not strong enough so a brakevan was added to make things more save for the children in perc's train
Furthermore, in 'Percy and the Signal', the Railway Series version of the story had him pulling five trucks/wagons and a guard's van. In the adaptation he's pulling just 3 trucks and a brake wagon.
A missed opportunity was to have Clarabel (and not the guard) agree to give up her floorboards for Percy’s fire. Would have been a nice character moment for her.
Well, another fantastic episode! Now for the John T Kenney illustrated books! (He is the second illustrator of the books, excluding Wilbert Awdry himself for the first book, William Middleton for the first public release of the first book, and Reginald Payne for the second book) Edit: I would like to see a reupload that fixes some of the issues in this episode, most notably at 5:30-5:32, because it should say Thomas and Toby, along with the music cutting from one to the other. Sorry I had to point that out.
So thats why a breakvan is coupled behind annie and clarabel because in the railway series there is no breakvan and whats so creepy that the tore up clarabel's floorboards instead of boxes and crates that would be to scary and creepy for children as lile clarabel is being destroyed and ripped up so a breakvan is added so that theyll get floorboard from that instead of clarabel abd clarabel is glad that didnt happen on screen all thanks to david mitton
10:24 Percy's train has gained an extra truck. Also, and I think this was pointed out when you made the *Eight Famous Engines* video, that Percy's Promise in the TV series took place after Percy Takes The Plunge. PTTP takes place immediately after Percy's Promise, when he's talking to the tank engines about how he helped Thomas. B) Between 5:22 and 5:32, I'm surprised you said Thomas' name but not Toby's name like Sir Topham Hatt says in the episode (he probably says it in the book too I just don't remember). C) Between 6:12 and 6:32, I'm surprised that you didn't say that Henry is all alone with both Duck and Percy instead of both Gordon and James being at his side as well teasing Duck as they're passing by (like in the episode). D) Why would the guard want to kill Clarabel?? That just makes no sense whatsoever. Just because he had an axe in his hand does not necessarily mean he wants to kill someone, he probably just also has it for safe keepings such as tearing down trees or becoming a lumberjack or something like that.
13:49 In the episode version of ''Percy's Promise'', Thomas is shown pulling red branch line coaches. Why didn't Percy take the red branch line coaches and Thomas take Annie and Clarabel as they are his personal coaches as Thomas and Percy were both pulling passenger trains anyway?
Well Thomas said he was busy that evening and allowed Percy to handle his coaches. I guess Thomas managed to finish whatever he was busy with sooner than expected and took red branchline coaches since Percy already had Annie and Clarabel. Besides in "Duck Takes Charge", Thomas was also seen with red coaches.
