Yes, and CART always seemed to have the messiest rolling starts of all. But... *Standing starts are extremely hard on the car's driveline, especially if more than one start is necessary. *Rolling starts reduce the need for a really low first gear, so it can be tall enough for some slower corners. That meant robust, relatively affordable 5-spd gearboxes provided enough ratios to keep the engines in their power-bands. (*BTW, the real reason for the move to 6-spd gearboxes in that era was to provide two, or even three, very closely spaced ratios at the top of the RPM range, for superspeedway racing.) *Indy cars have to do rolling starts on ovals, so there is an argument for consistent procedures.
This is what I don’t get about the otherwise great indycar racing … 1. Standing starts are just so much fairer and simpler …only time f1 will have rolling start is if it’s a really wet track and will start with 1 after the other starts for safety reasons when track is borderline … both scenarios (normal and super wet rolling starts) make better sense to me . 2. If standing starts are so hard on the cars … why then can they seem to have few problems from a standing start on every single pit stop?! 3. when most ovals have wider pit lanes than most street courses home straights couldn’t you just line up on an starting grid on pit lane fast lane after a 4 lap warm up? That way any stalled cars on oval start would have pit crew close by and no safety issue off cars at full speed at the start off the 2nd lap within 20 seconds … (40 plus at Indy ) only rule you change is just for this “opening lap” pit lane speed limit doesn’t apply but comes in as normal straight after.
Nice win for Al Unser Jr. in this Vancouver race. Also wonderful to see footage of his beautiful wife Shelly at 1:33:34
Paul Page and Derek Daly were a great combo for ESPN.
Could you imagine the firestorm if Daly did his matsushita jokes just before 24:00 today?
I noticed the same thing. I miss the days you could pretty much say what you wanted lol
As far as I know, the pole-sitter sets the pace, it's up to everyone else to keep up.
I never looked these street courses.
I miss those sounds, crowds, sponsors.
"a tight distance"?
the Penske car looks so sexy
FUCKING AWESOME
music at the intro please!
Paul page thinks a smaller hose is better ....lol.

I've seen worse aligned grids than that one get the green flag. This is why I hate rolling starts.
