This looks like a very cool, weird but unique looking flat oval! Sucks it’s gone, but man it would be awesome to have some more international oval tracks exist again!
Nothing broke! Cogan got on the gas to hard when shifting on cold tires! Sam Posey was also the worst announcer ever at Indy, he said some stupid stuff.
The super peppy intro is the cold bullshit that corporate America feeds you. Scott Brayton, the pole sitter, DIED days before this. Have some fucking class. They give him about 15 sentences of notification. Just gross.
I wonder what Jackie would say about today's speeds. Cars (and tracks) are much safer now. Might partially be due to his rhetoric. Death can happen at almost any speed. Jackie acknowledged the engineer. Yup. Where it matters most.
They always talk as if all the prize money goes to the drivers which was never the case. Sometimes a % does, 50% tops, with the rest going to the team. Some drivers get ZERO. It just depends on their contract. Paul Tracy, for example, in his first Penske contract got NONE of the winnings.
The last CART race called by Danny Sullivan, a great shame. He was so great at it, class, smarts and never just babbled on for the sake of filling air time. Maybe he just had enough and walked away, but if someone actually made the decision to replace him with Parker Jonstone, it was one of the worst ones in sports TV history. Sully and Bob Varsha, made such a great team.
Unreal starting grid. First two rows, just wow. Mario and the Andretti family could not possibly be more overrated at Indy. The Unser family is the undisputed, far and away GOAT racing family. 9 wins between 3 guys!
2:25:28 the reason people can't stand PR people. The CART PR woman throwing a fit because a kid that just won one of the most exciting 500 miles races ever is celebrating with his crew with his helmet on instead of instantly putting on his Firestone hat and being interviewed by Jack Arute.
Was there when Zanardi lost both of his legs. It happend in front of us still hear the sound of the impact. It was a wonder that the race took place at all... Because 4 days before was 9/11 so they where thinking about canceling the event.. But because everything was already there, they dicide to go on! Also a shame that practice and qualify on the saterday was canceld due to rain...
Really sad that the accident overshadowed what could’ve a been a thrilling three-way showdown in the end. What a comeback from Zanardi though, one of the greatest sportsman ever!
18:35 Man that could have been deadly. Mario mentioned there was no flag, but looking back there is a dude waving a WHITE flag, which makes no sense and would be practically invisible on a street circuit of white concrete walls. Even for 1989 that's a dumb decision to not remove that car.
This was peak late-ish CART...great cars, drivers, teams, crowds, and Bob Varsha and Sully , along with Jon Beekius in the pits, were a great, pure class announcing team (especially compared to the 2024 IndyCar season and the mid-season intro of the worthless unreliable hybrids which have ruined the balance of the cars and are damaging the integrity of the series, and the obnoxious, screeching clown show of the entire NBC team)
Man... I'm here in September 2024 after Mark Miles' comments about the lack of viability of a race in Mexico City and I really can't believe how out of touch he is. Say what you want about NASCAR's Ben Kennedy but in terms of risk taking with the schedule he is kicking Miles' butt right now.
Thanks for posting this race. I was there as a fan, but with pro camera equipment photographing it. After the race, because of that, I somehow ended up walking behind the car to the garage for their celebration. The guys pushing the car (including 2 guys literally pushing the rear tires) probably thought I was press, so I just stuck close to them and got in. Hard to believe it was almost 30 years ago.
28:10 Page: "And Mario has slowed down. Something strikes the Newman Haas team." Rutherford: "Well that seems to be Mario's M.O." Cruel, but unfortunately true.
Tim Cindric has not aged a day in 23 years! And what a job he's done at Penske...how many last as long as he has in the sport at all, let alone at the top of it?
Paul Tracy’s name wasn’t mentioned until lap 101, Helio is also barely in the discussion at that point.

Please Mr Penske Michigan again?!??
Junqueira when you are not going for the lap 1 gap in round 6 what are you doing in that car?

Another year I get to revel in an Andretti loss. Their tears, they taste so good.
1:29:02 Adrián Fernández
The mighty Pennzoil Panther! Didn't win. Lol! The livery that would become Michael's ride maybe? An Unser to the question? Great old school Indy!

FIVE YEARS FOR WEED???!!???
Mario was a BEAST! The best of the best ever! God I loved that guy and I'm not gay 😂
Good for Mears he got his 3rd win kind of cheap but a win is a win way to go Rick
20:25 Holy crap that hit sounded ugly

I miss this championship.

30:48 - Go Paul, you rascal.
Good racing
I was there! In Foro Sol 😊
These cars sound absolutely magnificent
9:50 John Andretti gets wiped out by his uncle, lol.
Público (1:10:36)
1:06:54 awesome sound
The Rahal cars should have finished 1 & 2 but it looked like Brack forced it & with 20 to go at that...
1:53:36 - the whole top ten's pregnant.
Early 90's was peak IndyCar
0:55 “Not if I have anything to do with it, Long Beach is mine” - Al Unser Jr.
Love Bobby Rahal, but I feel bad for Cogan. This was his race.

First car race I ever attended!
I never looked these street courses.

Talk about unsung hero, Dr Steve Olvey.....the carnage that man saw and lives saved. He was everywhere it seemed.

Gosh, between the styling and the paint schemes, the cars looked so good back then. The cars today look silly.
I personally never cared for these street courses. I like closed road circuits, such as Mid Ohio, much better.

Late 80’s to early 90’s was peak IndyCar. It was a time of generational transition.
