I first heard a recording of this masterpiece by Paul Hindemith over 60 years ago and have loved it ever since. This video is absolutely fabulous and a great treasure for all of us. Lorin Maazel leads a superb ensemble of first rate musicians. The whole video is first rate!! Bravo!!
I played with Maazel various times in Europe. He was a bore in rehearsal, then put on a big show during the concert. But he had a great stick technique.
Extraordinary performance and orchestra under the conduction of Lorin Maazel , this masterpiece is gem of the modern music , how his school influence in the first half of the XX century, specially in the expressionism and neoclasicism movements, I've felt the influence of this piece in some Shostakovich symphonies.
I love how he is not at all afraid to pull the tempo back and let the grandeur speak. This is a very expressive interpretation; no phrase seems to lose its value. I still love the old recording with Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic, mostly because of the sumptuous, dark tone color, but this one really does have some spectacular moments.
Thank you so much for up-loading. You have given all of us a great gift - we who would not ever be able to be at and hear this performance. Why don't more people know Hindemiths music? It's a complete mystery to me. Thank you again! :)
Ich finde es einfach toll, wie Maestro Maazel das Thema „Es sungen drei engel“ in der Eröffnung des ersten Satzes nicht überstürzt. Zu viele Dirigenten verstehen das falsch

Another excellent version is the Chicago Symphony with Fritz Reiner . Many years ago

Hindemith - tears in my eyes - genius - the modern Bach.
At last, a performance where you can almost hear the angels enter with the orchestral bells at 2:15!
A superb performance of this masterwork! It sounds a bit like Bártok in the last movement. And I was surprised to see that George Clooney plays viola.
Hindemith, my way. Forget Boulez.
Sempre grande L.M.

Way too slow, which is par for the course for Maazel.
