For gaming's most loved creator, Shigeru Miyamoto has kinda been a dick over the years, leaving a trail of angry developers in his wake.
So this episode of Fact Hunt is dedicated to Shigsy's less than honourable escapades over time.

    Thank you ever so much!
For people asking for a source on the infamous DKC line, aside from the March 1995 interview of Electronic Games magazine it comes from, a second source is Steven L. Kent's "Ultimate History of Video Games" in one of his lengthy footnotes on page 518: "An interesting story lies behind Yoshi's Island. When Shigeru Miyamoto first demonstrated the game to Nintendo's marketing department, it was rejected because it had Mario-related graphics rather than the waxy, prerendered graphics of Donkey Kong Country. Rather than change to an artistic look he did not like, Miyamoto made the game even more cartoon-like, giving it a hand-drawn look. The second version was accepted Miyamoto, who is rightfully proud of his work, was offended that the first version was rejected. That same month, I interviewed Miyamoto and Tim Stamper, creator of Donkey Kong Country, together and noticed that Miyamoto was a bit hard on Stamper, making such statements as "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good." In a later interview, Miyamoto admitted that Yoshi's Island had been a touchy subject at the time: I think that it happened after Donkey Kong Country was introduced. In comparison with the graphics of the Super Donkey Kong, there was not enough punch to Yoshi's Island. That was what I was told by the marketing people." Also note the IGN interview was a made during a promotion for the release of Donkey Kong Country Returns on Wii, so he would have to recant anything like that wouldn't he?
Also, further evidence from the man who gave that interview in video: • Video

Even if this is true Miyomoto was right. DK1 was mediocre game with great graphics. Miyamoto was pissed at Nintendo management for warmly suggesting to change Yoshi's Island art style to pre-rendered graphics similar to DKC.

But yes you're correct, Yoshi's Island looks way better in the style they went with over the pre-rendered graphics.

    I met Shigaro Miyamoto once.
I was at the Reptile Center in St. Augustine, Florida back in 2006 and who should walk in; but freaking Miyamoto. Dude come's stomping in with these big heeled iron toe boots and I'm going over to introduce myself and maybe get an autograph when Miyamoto hops over the railing into the turtle exhibit and he just goes nuts stomping turtles right and left. He's kicking turtles around like soccer balls trying to kick them into other turtles, jumping as high as he can and stomping them into pancakes with both feet and all the while he's just scarfing down from this huge bag of shrooms. Dude is laughing like a mad man making the Super Mario Bros sound effects with his mouth, and there are kids crying, chunks of turtles flying all over the place, its a bad scene man. Anyway his handler comes in and tells everyone to calm down and that this is part of Mr. Miyamoto's "creative process" and he starts paying everyone there a thousand bucks a piece to sign a non disclosure agreement and delete any pictures or videos they may have taken, I can't even imagine how much they had to pay the Reptile Center for all those poor turtles.

Not to be "that guy", but I have read a bunch of articles and interviews that say that Shiggy was misunderstood over the DKC debacle. In an IGN interview, he says "The first point that I want to make is that I actually worked very closely with Rare on the original Donkey Kong Country. And apparently recently some rumor got out that I didn't really like that game? I just want to clarify that that's not the case, because I was very involved in that. And even emailing almost daily with Tim Stamper right up until the end."
I remember that quote from your video quite well, and I think context has a lot to do with it.
Actually, reading more into it, the interviewer (who interviewed Stamper and Shiggy at the same time) wrote the following:
_"An interesting story lies behind Yoshi's Island. The second version was accepted._
_Miyamoto, who is rightfully proud of his work, was offended that the first version was rejected. That same month, I interviewed Miyamoto and Tim Stamper, creator of Donkey Kong Country, together and noticed that Miyamoto was a bit hard on Stamper, making such statements as "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good."_
_In a later interview, Miyamoto admitted that Yoshi's Island had been a touchy subject at the time:_
_I think that it happened after Donkey Kong Country was introduced. In comparison with the graphics of the Super Donkey Kong, there was not enough punch to Yoshi's Island. That was what I was told by the marketing people._
_I intensified my hand-drawn touch on Yoshi's Island from the initial part of the program. Everybody else was saying that they wanted better hardware and more beautiful graphics instead of this art._
_Even while I was working on the Super Mario World, I was thinking that the next hero should be Yoshi. Other people have created games based upon Yoshi. . . . Yoshi's World Hunters, Yoshi's Egg, Yoshi's Cookie, and so forth--games that I don't really like. So I decided that I should make an authentic Yoshi game."_
So I guess there is truth to the quote. However, I don't think he meant it to be completely insulting, but was more frustrated that his baby (SMW2) was being shit on by Nintendo, while DKC was being lauded with praise.
Shiggy must have apologized later on, as Rare still developed two more DKC games in the exact same style. Hell, Shiggy eventually pushed for the series to make a comeback via Retro Studios. Maybe it was just bad timing. Something tells me there was a bit more to what he said, and that the translator may have messed up, or taken what he said out of context. I don't know. I'm just speculating.

@woooudo So Nintendo, the game-monopoly of the late 80's/early 90's fought the movie-monopoly of the 90's? I'm not surprised Nintendo would lose because the courts were based in America and the movie-monopoly was American unlike the gaming monopoly at the time that was Japanese. Something tells me the courts were biased with the giant American movie-industry against the giant Japanese video-game industry. It's natural of course.

Considering all the bridges Nintendo has burned over the years, it's no surprise that their modern consoles are really struggling with attracting third-party developers. I know hindsight is 20/20 and all, but just imagine what the landscape of gaming would look like today if Nintendo had actually managed to retain Rockstar, Squaresoft, and Rareware. GTA III and Final Fantasy VII especially would have been huge for them.

Nintendo doesn't have a problem with attracting third party devs. It's just that the largest titles that would normally go on a VCR-sized console can't really be handled on a tablet-sized machine. Miyamoto stripping out the story elements from the "Paper Mario" series, and suggesting that "Splatoon" should incorporate the Toad characters instead of Inklings, really shows you how conservative and tone-deaf his managerial style can be. Then there's the fact that, in 35 years working together, Koji Kondo only recalls one time in which Miyamoto ever complimented his work. Or the time he visited Retro Studios, only to insultingly tear-down four of their projects before pulling the plug on each of them. Or the stories of him being shielded away from projects within Nintendo so that he can't inject his own ideas onto them. Or how he condescendingly remarked that he could make a game like "Halo" but would rather work on something "unique".
He's the greatest game designer ever, but his jovial, childlike persona is a fabrication.

FreedInsanity You’re wrong about splatoon, what happened was the team developing the game couldn’t think of a character to base the game around as originally the characters were rabbits that could shoot ink through guns. When asking Miyamoto for help, he said that they COULD use his characters from Mario if they wanted too. The developers then tried out using Mario characters but it didn’t work either until they settled on the idea for squids and eventually inkling, which Miyamoto himself said was a great idea.

    • @Jdudec367
      @Jdudec367 4 роки тому +1

eh...tearig down projects can be tough...but there may have been a reason for that like maybe not having such a big workload for them at once? him being shielded away could mean he is childlike honestly if anything.....or just well stubborn but it's likely both honestly. that halo quote just meant that he wouldn't try to do something that somebody else would but would instead try something more unique in terms of a experience. I get how it can come off as snarky not sure if the intent was that he was full of himself but here's a response from Bungie's frank o connor
"Yeah, well. I just want to go on the record and say that Bungie is hard at work on a side-scrolling platform game featuring some plumbers -- I'm not going to say what their ethnicity is, it's none of anyone's business -- but we took that as a gauntlet, a sort of glove slap, and we're going to respond in 2D scrolling style. That's all I'm saying." that just seems like he's salty if you ask me about what miyamoto said

    • @Pan_Z
      @Pan_Z 3 роки тому +4

None of what you said is even remotely true other than the Paper Mario debacle.
Miyamoto offered the Splatoon team Mario characters, since they couldn't figure out their own aesthetic. They declined and made inklings.
Retro Studios was juggling 4 projects at once. Miyamoto saw promise in their first-person sci-fi shooter. He offered them them the Metroid IP, which became Metroid Prime. Retro studios axed the other 3 projects to focus on Prime.
I could not find any sort of interview where Koji Kondo says Miyamoto only complimented his work once.
Seriously. Nintendo wouldn't keep Miyamoto around (in a senior position no less) unless he was helpful.

I have a number 5 for everyone who is a fan of Paper Mario.
You will never get another Paper Mario like the first two. After PM:TTYD, Miyamoto decreed that original characters like the partners you get in the Paper Mario games were no longer allowed. To make up for this, they decided to fill future Paper Mario games with nothing but toads.
Furthermore, because the Mario and Luigi series were rpgs, the Paper Mario series has to move away from that. I hope you enjoy the Mario and Luigi series, because that's the only rpg you'll be getting from them, because Miyamoto is an asshole.

    • @TheWaverunners
      @TheWaverunners 7 років тому +1

It is valid, for the most part. Miyamoto stated the original characters thing after Super Paper Mario while Intelligent Systems was working on Paper Mario 3DS. The big problem is that he seems to think that a game's failure means that people don't care about a series anymore rather than them being non-interested in a single game. He also has an ideology that sounds good on paper, but becomes toxic in practice. Every game released needs to be innovative and new, which doesn't really affect the cash cow franchises like Zelda and Mario, but prevents series like F-Zero from getting a new entry, and creates unwanted spin-offs and/or gimmick filled messes such as Federation Force and Star Fox Zero. I respect what Miyamoto has done for the industry as a whole, but I really wish he didn't have the power he did at Nintendo.

    • @magicalshark8021

Jae Darké may be wrong, but from what I heard it was Kensuke Tanabe that ruined it. There was a lot of miscommunication between Miyamoto, and Tanabe. Miyamoto DID suggest using only Main Mario Characters, but again, it was only a suggestion, an idea for "This spin-off PM game, for casual play". (And I do believe he only suggested that on SS, but I'm not sure.) People have been saying Tanabe wants to be like Miyamto, so he follows whatever he suggests, and he also said he doesn't want to do much to Paper Mario because it's "Not his franchise, and is scared of ruining it." (Kinda failed there) I may be wrong in all this, but I don't think Miyamoto was the ONE reason it's been trash. (It doesn't mean much, but it's also worth noting that the first 3 PM's wouldn't have existed without him)

Shigeru Miyamoto is the George Lucas of the gaming industry. He used to be a creative visionary genius who pumped out beloved classics, but as time went on he lost touch with what people actually wanted and his ideas got worse and worse, and he didn't have anyone to tell him things like "no, forcing motion controls and cockpit view into Star Fox Zero just so we can show off the Wii U Gamepad even though we've already abandoned it ourselves is a terrible idea", so he just ruined what could have been great projects, and the only reason he's still respected today is because of what he made in the past.

I'm comparing it in the sense that it could have been better had someone told the big man in charge that his ideas were shit. The reason so many of the prequel trilogy's bad ideas managed to make it into the final product was because George Lucas surrounded himself with yes-men who never told him when he was wrong about something, similar to how nobody at Nintendo ever tells Miyamoto that he's doing something wrong.

Jez San is the person from Argonaut who has made claims (about Star Fox 2 & Croc) that would potentially reflect negatively on Miyamoto and/or Nintendo. Jez San is a businessman/programmer & Argonaut founder/CEO. Jez San's Argonaut corporation lost out on tech royalties (from the FX chip) when Star Fox 2 was cancelled. In contrast, the public comments from Argonaut's Dylan Cuthbert, Giles Goddard, Colin Reed, and Krister Wombell are positive/favorable about Nintendo & Miyamoto. Moreover, each of these Argonaut programmers were fully paid for their work. See the following explanation for the details: www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=227392252&postcount=420
Some excerpts from the linked explanation:
"The entire Star Fox 2 development team (Nintendo EAD and the additional contract game programmers) were paid for their work. Argonaut [Jez San and the Argonaut corporation] specifically didn't see any technology royalties [from Star Fox 2] because the FX chip wasn't manufactured since the game wasn't officially released. Argonaut doesn't own any game code because Dylan Cuthbert, Kristen Wombell, Giles Goddard and Colin Reed were all contract employees working for Nintendo. Goddard and Reed even stayed working full time for Nintendo for several years after [instead of going back to Jez San's Argonaut], while Cuthbert and Wombell found new ventures..."
The reason Dylan Cuthbert did not join Nintendo, as his fellow Argonaut programmers Giles Goddard and Colin Reed did, is that contract restrictions (known as 'headhunting clauses' or 'non-compete clauses') were put in place by Argonaut [Jez San] that prevented Cuthbert from joining Nintendo. Cuthbert could go to any other company he wanted, or go back to Argonaut, but he was prevented by the Argonaut corporation [i.e., Jez San] from joining Nintendo. Since Cuthbert did not want to go back to Argonaut/Jez San, after Star Fox 2 was cancelled in 1995, and could not go to Nintendo, he decided to join Sony:
"...At that point, Cuthbert had been living in Japan for three or four years. Because of a headhunting clause in his contract [with Argonaut], Nintendo could not hire him. Fellow programmer Giles Goddard didn't have such a clause in his contract, and Goddard ended up working at Nintendo..."
"...Wranglings over a non-compete clause in his contract with Argonaut unfortunately meant that, unlike his colleague Giles Goddard (who most recently made 3DS launch title Steel Diver for the platform holder), [Dylan Cuthbert] was unable to take up a full time position in Kyoto. But rather than heading back to England, he instead got on a plane to California to work at Sony..."
Cuthbert spoke positively about his time with Nintendo:
"Cuthbert remembers his stint at Sony, where he was lead designer on colourful PS1 shooter Blasto, as a 'friendly time' but a very different experience to what he'd seen in Kyoto. 'Sony was much more American,' he explains. 'It was enjoyable but it was a different lifestyle. It had a very corporate feel, whereas Nintendo was more like a family - a family-run company. That was the big difference. At Sony you felt a corporate entity around you at all times. Whereas at Nintendo it was like Miyamoto-san was your dad and [former CEO] Yamauchi-san was your grandad.'"
Cuthbert also formed his own company in 2001, after leaving Sony, and since then has worked with Miyamoto and Nintendo on two very high-profile games, Star Fox Command released in 2006, and Star Fox 64 3D released in 2011:
"Dylan Cuthbert: ... I’m director of Star Fox 64 3D [released in July of 2011]. Before that, I made Star Fox Command [released in August of 2006]…
Satoru Iwata: Going back a bit, you were also involved in development of the original Star Fox for the Super Famicom.
Cuthbert: That’s right. Going even further back, about 20 years ago, I came to Japan from England for the first time.
Miyamoto: That was 1990. You came to lend support as a programmer for Star Fox..."
And again, the claims that would potentially reflect negatively on Miyamoto came specifically from Jez San, not from Dylan Cuthbert or Giles Goddard or Krister Wombell or Colin Reed. Jez San made those questionable claims in the following article, which is worth reading in full: www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-04-born-slippy-the-making-of-star-fox
However, even Jez San has had positive things to say about Miyamoto. The following piece was published by Retro Gamer in 2014:
"...Despite the unorthodox methods of game design witnessed by the Argonaut team whilst coding alongside Nintendo’s golden boy, the encounter [with Miyamoto] was, as [Jez] San is swift to point out, an extremely positive one: 'I have enormous respect for [Miyamoto's] talents. He’s an amazing guy, and very humble. But the way he likes to work is very different than most people and it takes a lot of getting used to.'"

You know, I always thought Shigeru Miyamoto only started being dickish recently, especially given how he started taking dictator-like control over the franchise after Super Mario Galaxy came out by saying that Mario games shouldn't have a story at all, especially given what he did with Paper Mario starting with Sticker Star. I mean, Splatoon almost became "Super Mario Sunshine 2" because of him believe it or not since he thought Splatoon wouldn't sell unless it was changed to a Mario title, he was proven wrong fortunately.
Apparently, he's been like this since the SNES days, and if anything, I can see him being rather hard to work with, sometimes to the point where I have actually considered him to be the video game equivalent of George Lucas, since both are the creators of widely respected and well-known franchises (Mario and Zelda for Miyamoto, and Star Wars for Lucas) that tend to be rather dickish with their franchises and make controversial decisions that anger both developers and fans. I'd have to say that I think Miyamoto is stuck in the past, and at times I feel like he has a huge ego, as if his fame and success have gone to his head.

Masterge77 He gives me the vibe that he's always been like that. I disagree with Miyamoto being like George Lucas, because Miyamoto was a good and competent Dev, the problem is him forcing his ideas in projects that have the misfortune of being under the same roof as him, Lucas has good ideas but is a bad director and writer, unable to properly execute them.

Yeah, I agree with you, it just feels like Miyamoto isn't exactly the person I used to admire in the past, as he just seems like a difficult person to work with. Now it's not uncommon for a creator to be hard to work with, or have some pretty stupid ideas for their works, but Miyamoto just seems like he's against any form change or innovation to his works that isn't made by him, and he himself is against changing it, which causes things to stagnate.

Giles Goddard: “...Quite a few months were spent around just playing around with different camera views, animations, ways of looking at the map. At some point, the game had a fixed path, almost like an isometric type of look. That didn’t represent that much of a jump from the original 2D Mario… [Mario’s movement] was the first thing, we were just playing around with Mario. He was wandering around a simple grid to start with… 99% of the game is concerned with [Mario’s movement]. Most of Miyamoto’s time is spent on that, and the movement of the camera… his main job is to sit down with the programmers and play with controls and camera and shape the way that the way the game *feels*. That is fundamental to the entire game. I think [the camera] probably went through 1000s of different systems - having it locked, having it moving, having it locked again, player could control it 100%, etc. That was one of the problems - Miyamoto wasn’t sure how to control the camera in 3D as he hadn’t worked with them before, so it went through with various stages, being controlled by the different stages…”

Note that Allen Varney, writing in The Escapist Magazine back in 2006, favorably contrasted Miyamoto's handling of Retro Studios with Electronic Arts's handling of Origin: while Origin died a slow and painful death, Retro soon became a world-class studio, after agreeing to the changes that Miyamoto insisted upon: "...Miyamoto pressured Retro to cancel several other projects... an action adventure... their football and car-combat games, and finally... a Zelda-style roleplaying game called Raven Blade. The action-adventure team shifted to Metroid Prime… Nintendo's successful takeover of Retro contrasts with the similar case of Electronic Arts buying another Austin studio, Origin. Origin's acquisition led to its lingering, agonizing death, owing to EA's pernicious company politics… In comparison, Miyamoto's EAD unit stuck with Retro for years, maintaining continuity on a critical project, rotating in new managers until someone finally worked, and then (note well!) stopping. The results speak for themselves: Retro today is, by all accounts, a much nicer place to work. And after its halting progress in its first four years, Retro has already followed up Prime with a direct sequel, Metroid Prime: Echoes (2004)..."
One could make a similar argument that Rare ultimately benefited greatly from their collaboration with Nintendo, and that when the Stamper brothers (founders of Rare) decided to 'cash out' (sell themselves to Microsoft) and bail out of the company that they had founded, Nintendo was correct in thinking that the formerly great studio was already becoming a shell of its former self.

Not to sound like a Miyamoto fanboy or anything, even though I'll probably come across like one here, I don't exactly think the title of this video works. The video itself is great as always, but calling Miyamoto an asshole in the title just comes across like obvious clickbait, and considering most of the stuff being told is kind of being told from witness accounts anyway it seems a bit heavily weighted to me. Since people can both lie, exaggerate, and piss-ass about as well if they're feeling like it. Interviews with Japanese developers are also often times horrifically translated, especially in the past. A more fitting title IMHO would be something like "4 times Shigeru Miyamoto wasn't perfect" or "4 times Shigeru Miyamoto upset people" or "4 times Shigeru Miyamoto caused controversy". Something like that. I mainly say that because half of these are hardly even examples of him being an asshole anyway, they're more horrible business strategies.

Honestly, the first one here is the only one that I can see as being Miyamoto's fault, everything else is more of his company's doing. I think something along the lines of "Four Times Nintendo Screwed Its Developers Over" would be the best title. Still a good video though.

Like most things in the world, it's not all black and white you guys. It's grey.
The first entry on this list is questionable as some others have pointed out but as for Argonaut's split with Nintendo, the company staff actually recall fond memories of Miyamoto and Argonaut's staff hung out with him in his office. His statement about the royalties may have been insensitive but that decision was probably not even up to him.
The more unpalatable aspects of Miyamoto was when he lost his temper at the Wind Waker staff when a demo of it glitched out during a public display and when he apparently told the head of Angel Studios (now Rockstar San Diego) that "you’re going to throw away most of that shit" in regards to a racing game his company was making for Nintendo (although, Diego Angel may have been paraphrasing when he recounted that story).
Even though he's hard on game developers, he at least has the decency to be nice towards fans. www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/bq8dxx/a_year_ago_today_i_was_in_kyoto_attempting_to_get/
The dude is temperamental and demanding and he definitely has made some questionable decisions in the past (Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Star Fox Adventures) but that image of him being a friendly, whimsical game designer isn't a total fabrication.

Growing up I've heard dev stories in mags and even on the internet, didn't think it was true at the time since I had full blinders on. I do remember the static he gave Retro studios during the Metroid Prime development. "Where's the fun?" , and he also had a severe bias towards shooters too.
Now, it's all starting to make sense. I've always been a port beggar for some USA third parties to grace the latest Nintendo console yet never fully understood why I could never get the likes of Saints Row, Fallout, or GTA on a console. I thought it was due to underpoweredness alone. It wasn't just Miyomoto, but there were other former heads of Nintendo that made working with them a nightmare in some cases. Look up how devs had to create multiple publishing brands just to get around their limited games per year rule back in the NES/SNES days.
That stuff with Rare and DKC... that's incredibly childish and it puts those remarks Shiggy made into perspective, that even the hardest of hardcore N fan can't defend (though some will). It was implied that MS "stole" Rare from Nintendo but I've always known there had to be a real solid reason they went with the acquisitions so hastily.
Not trying to put down a man that gave us some good games, but his ego is the most detrimental thing to Nintendo right now.

There's a massive difference between concepts/prototypes and finished products. Anytime someone does something groundbreaking, there's always going to be others behind the scene who felt like they came up with the ideas first or deserve the credit. You should always take those sort of claims with a grain of salt. Bringing groundbreaking, finished products to market and making them successful and widespread is far different from coming up with concepts in a lab. One takes leadership, conviction, and courage to take risks into uncharted waters. The other doesn't. For the record, it's not uncommon for visionaries to be seen as assholes. Assholes get shit done and have determination to conquer goals. Leadership is not a friendly business.

  • @DanvanBeatlesfan
    @DanvanBeatlesfan 7 років тому +10

It's pretty common practice to reuse assets and concepts from cancelled games for an upcoming game. Why wouldnt Nintendo want to make Starfox 64 a more robust and impressive game if they're launching a whole new system for it? It makes more sense to release a polished game as a system seller for your new platform than to release a game as a sendoff to your old one. I feel like this is more of a business move than something spiteful or greedy.

RISING SUN - Playthroughs and more!

Which Miyamoto, after playing a prototype, told that it was apparently too much like TTYD. The developers, who saw Miyamoto as a god, took this comment seriously and changed everything from the original format to meet Miyamoto's standards. While he didn't make SS, he was the one who influenced the making of it. So don't necessarily blame Miyamoto, but the people of the SS development team that kissed his ass, and evidently, still do.

I have some serious droughts about Argonaut's story. The only info I can find about it is quotes from Argonaut's founder(Jez) which can hardly be considered proof. The part that sound partiality fishy was saying that Super Mario 64 used the camera system from their prototype; Croc used a far inferior camera system to Mario 64 and not just in execution. There is likely some truth to the story as Argonaut's fallout with Nintendo made no business since for either party and Jez seems to be personally bitter towards Minamoto.
Also the timeline doesn't add up for them to be the source of 3d platformers. Nintendo was already working on a 3d platformer with Rare on the SNES that got scraped into Banjo-Kazooie(Project Dream for anyone who is interested). Not to mention that isometric platformers were already a thing and were the most likely inspiration of 3d plaformers.
While it is true that Minamoto is know to act... childish, accusations of plagiarism are serious and require hard evidence.

@DEADPOOL9AND It was going to be a platformer RPG. Square did something similar with a isometric RPG mario game.
Also my point is, if they made the camera system, than why use a inferior system for Croc? They still had the source code for Star Fox 2(which was they leaked some time later) and probably the programmer who made it to begin with.

I think Jez's point was that Miyamoto took inspiration from the work of Argonaut employees, then took those employees from Argonaut, leaving Jez without much means to recoup his loss. Fair enough that he'd be salty about that if he kept seeing Nintendo succeed where Argonaut could have.
Mario 64 and Croc both have awful fiddly experimental cameras, so I don't see what point he wanted to make about that.

@@Larry I'd *love* to know Nintendo's reasons *internally* for planning to make a CD-based SNES *for years* starting development in 1987 (give or take a year), then ditching the entire thing. Soooooo many development companies were planning larger-scale CD-based games for SNES for years, only to be screwed over by Nintendo's decision to nix it in the end. There's *a lot* more to that story that I don't think any of us are really ever going to find out, over-simplified conclusions aside.
Without a doubt, this was the company's single-biggest misstep in decades. Its importance can't be overstated.

@@Hausbrauen Cancelled SNES-CD project was called PlayStation, and was a collaboration effort with Sony. Everyone got what they wanted in the end, except for Nintendo. I think it still haunts Nintendo to this date, considering how they are reluctant to use laserdisc technology. We should rub it into them even further.
Meanwhile, there wasn't a 2x or 4x CD drive nor a software-driven preloading technique. Playing game with constant long loading is rather frustrating experience, often seen in early PS/SS games. Maybe Wand of Gamelon was too a victim of it.

Yeah, a lot of the Argonaut stuff is pretty iffy. Mainly in that their claims of stolen code, plagiarized concepts -- none of it has any substance; it's just their claims. If they were so certain of this theft, they would've tried for a court case, or released comparisons of code samples to prove the actions against them. Not to mention the Yoshi racing and Super Mario 64 thing. Which is it, did it steal from one or the other? Plus, the Yoshi game never actually "went into full swing"; they made the prototype _with _the pitch and were refused out of the gate. Even if it was allegedly because Nintendo didn't want to trust a third party with such a project, that's actually completely fair considering that'd be the absolute biggest jump they'd ever made; you'd want to keep something so monumental in-house. Altogether, this just comes across as a dead company butthurt about failed projects wanting to cast shade from beyond the grave. There's not a single ounce of viable substance to any of their claims.

MagnificantSasquatch Jez San is the person from Argonaut Games who hasmade claims (about Star Fox 2 & Croc) that would potentially reflect negatively on Miyamoto and/or Nintendo. Jez San is a businessman/programmer & Argonaut Games founder/CEO. Jez San's Argonaut Games corporation lost out on tech royalties (from the FX chip) when Star Fox 2 was cancelled. In contrast, the public comments from Argonaut programmers Dylan Cuthbert, Giles Goddard, Colin Reed, and Kirster Wombell are positive about Nintendo and Miyamoto.
Moreover, each of these Argonaut programmers were fully paid for their work by Nintendo, as outlined by Shikamaru Ninja. In fact, none of these 4 programmers returned to the Argonaut Games corporation after Star Fox 2 was cancelled: Giles Goddard and Colin Reed decided to work for Nintendo instead, Krister Wombell had already founded his own company in 1993 (Virtuality) and was no longer with Argonaut, and Dylan Cuthbert went on to work for Sony.
The reason Dylan Cuthbert could not join Nintendo, as his fellow Argonaut programmers Giles Goddard and Colin Reed did, is that contract restrictions (known as 'headhunting clauses' or 'non-compete clauses') had been put in place by the Argonaut Games corporation [CEO Jez San] that prevented Cuthbert from joining Nintendo. Cuthbert could thus go to any other company he wanted, or go back to Argonaut, but he was prevented by the Argonaut corporation [i.e., CEO Jez San] from joining Nintendo.
Cuthbert did not want to go back to England/Argonaut/Jez San, after Star Fox 2 was cancelled in 1995, and could not go to Nintendo, so he decided to join Sony in California (he was impressed by the technology behind Ridge Racer on the PlayStation). Cuthbert worked with Sony from 1995 to 2001, then founded his own company [Q-Games] in 2001. Cuthbert has consistently had positive things to say about his work with Miyamoto/Nintendo during the 1990 to 1995 period -- in 2011, he contrasted his time at Nintendo favorably with his time at Sony, though he continues to work closely with both companies -- and has continued to work with Miyamoto/Nintendo, on Star Fox Command (released in 2006) and on Star Fox 64 3D (released in 2011).

To the Nintendroids / White Knights:
People need to stop trying to defend a company, it's their job to do so, not yours. If you get butthurt over opinions or facts about a video game company, something's wrong; seek help.
Just because someone is stating what once happened, you have to go all crybaby over it? boo fucking hoo, everyone makes mistakes, even Shigeru Miyamoto.
Please tell me; how in any way shape or form does this stop you from enjoying Nintendo games to their fullest? why do you give a shit about what others think? Miyamoto isn't you, so why so upset?

It's a Japanese business thing. You cannot allow foreigners to be seen as superior to you if you insist that you are the masters of your craft.
Sega of Japan did similar with regards to Sega of America. SoA made the company gang busters of money during the early 90's going against SoJ recommendations to the point where SoJ were ignoring telephone calls, faxes and meetings with SoA not to mention cutting the budget heavily to interfere with future marketing and projects.
Nintendo are a heavily conservative company ran by old Japanese business men and if they don't get their own way then they will salt the earth to get it.
