New Jersey and Toronto are so much alike, I'm not surprised Keefe went there.
suspect defense and goaltending? check. although the devils don't spend so much on their best players.

Sheldon Keefe will definitely give the Devils a lot of regular season wins but I’m curious if he can make the necessary adjustments to make the Devils successful in the playoffs
This will be everyone’s question and will make for interesting story lines both if he can and if he can’t
We all know that Keefe wasn't a problem... It's the team structure of Toronto to starve half of their roster to accomodate 4 forwards

Keefe was never the problem for the leafs in the playoffs.
And honestly, for a team as young as the devils, getting into the playoffs at all will be enough for them. They're a young team that wants to learn and Sheldon Keefe is the best man for that job.
None of the 4 core took responsibility after the 1st round....Keefe did so I think he ll be fine tbh.

@@lobear3074No, he is a big reason. When you “tinker” with your lines all the way up until the playoffs, and get out-coached every playoffs, it’s on you. Losing to bottom feeder teams every single year his entire tenure, which put them in 3rd place instead of first place, that preparation is on you

Excited to see what Hiller can do over the summer and what new system he’s gonna run. Despite the playoffs I think he did pretty good after the free fall that was before the all star break
Keefe to NJ is honestly huge. I think he has a solid roster to work with without the immense pressure of Toronto. Hoping NJ can settle their goaltending issues and meet their potential.
Keefe was the best guy on the market IMO. I need the Devils to win the Cup next year, both as a fan and a lover of memes.
Yeah, personally I feel the same, plus it still leaves the Sullivan conspiracy open as there could be a switch with Keefe going back to Dubas.
But overall he is a better pick, unless they got a former Devil, maybe Pandolfo in the future, needs to coach more college though.
Shame that ratings are up, means we're no where near losing ESPN and TNT's horrendous coverage. Maybe one day they'll stop treating us like we're children watching our first ever hockey game...one can dream

Ratings going up is telling you that there are many people who ARE watching their first hockey game. You can't gatekeep while also complaining that the league isn't more popular.
@neeltheother2342 My fiancee and I just started watching this year (we're both huge Caniacs) after a friend of ours took us to a Charlotte Checkers game. Before that, I had not thought to watch hockey, but we love everything about the sport, and to put that into perspective, she has never shown an interest in sports. I think it's a matter of people like myself are getting introduced to the sport.
I think hiring Keefe is the right move for NJD. He has the right skillset to establish them as a consistent playoff team, and that's the next step the Devils need to take.

The Hiller hire lets me know the Kings are not serious about winning. Takes the pressure off knowing your team could care less.

@@DB-gr7ch There is no evidence that the retreads are not as good as the up-and-comers with zero experience from what I've seen. It's tough to separate the coaching from the players. Bednar was a disaster in his first year and then won a Cup five years later, but they added Makar, Kadri, Nicushkin, Toews, etc.

I think Ulmark in Utah makes a lot of sense especially with the amount of draft picks Utah will have
1. utah has ingram and vejmelka. they're not looking for a goalie.
2. ullmark wants to stay in the east.
it's not happening.
Hiller was brought in as an assistant to pep up the power play, and he did that. He wasn't given a mandate to completely upend McClellan's 1-3-1 system mid-season, so he didn't. Given free rein, it will be interesting to see what he does and how he does. The interesting thing will be to see what happens with Marco Sturm, given that he had a pretty successful season coaching Ontario. He was being treated as someone who had a future as a head coach in the NHL, but when the top job with the team grooming him opened up, he didn't get it. Shannon had mentioned that he might be a good fit for the Sharks, and I could see that happening.

As a Devils fan I'm completely fine with the Keefe hire, my only hangup is the clip of his game 7 pregame speech. That being said as a coach you need to coach to the players you have and as soft as the leafs core is, he probably felt he had to try and coddle them. Hopefully it's a mistake he's learned from.
I'm sure he has learned a lot. Considering Toronto was his first NHL gig, with no NHL assistant coaching experience, either, I thought he did quite well. I, too, wonder if his game prep talks were more based on the team than anything else. He won a Calder cup in the AHL, and I'd like to see his game time team talks then just to see if there was any difference.
I'm excited for Keefe. I think he will be a great fit

As a NJ and TML fan, I would love to see either team offer sheet swayman @8.25M for 5 years. Dude is a vezina caliber goalie consistently and would help resolve some of the goaltending issues that both have shown.

As a Devils fan in Kingston, Ontario, it's been a pretty entertaining 24 hours 😂 I'm hoping the best, I'll leave it at that lol
TV ratings: The ratings for the entire Stanley Cup playoffs were up last year over 2022 BUT, the ratings for the Panthers Golden Knights series were down FORTY PERCENT from the Lightning Avs final in 2022. A Panthers Stars final would draw nowhere near what a Rangers ( Biggest city in the US with may translated fans in other series) Oilers ( highlight reels McDavid, Draisatl and crew) series would.
I dont think it will happen, but mitch (with extension obv) for ullmark and maybe a pick or depth defenseman, kinda solves both teams biggest issues doesnt it? Toronto gets their #1 goaltender and a reinforced blue line, and boston gets a superstar goal scorer to really buff up their offense
marner's not a superstar goal scorer. he's more of an assist guy. and while that might be good news for pasta, boston isn't taking on mitch's 10.9.

Keefe has all the pieces in NJ to build a Cup contender. The Devs have top end fowards and dmen, and all they need to do is look for a goalie. Maybe they'll go after DeSmith...
i hope you're kidding about desmith. solid goalie, but not a starter. honestly, i think he'd be a perfect fit in buffalo. 1 year contract, 30-35 games, back up UPL while levi starts in rochester.
the devils should get ullmark, saros, or markstrom. if ullmark or saros, send allen in the return, have daws back up.

Michael Dipietro is in Providence former Canuck goalie of the future. Swayman also has a career high of 44 games played so you NEED a 1B
there's plenty of options for that, so it's not a big concern. if you trade linus to NJ, you can take allen back in the return, for example. there's also guys like stolarz, lankinen, quick, desmith, brossoit, kahkonen, talbot, desmith...
After reading that "feels like any remaining team can win the cup" my brain just had to go to sarcastic mode and be like "yeah, its propably not going to be any of the eliminated teams this year". I get what is ment but it reminds me a bit of "it wasnt really a sweep" from rob the bod last year.

price was always our future though. better to trade halak at his highest value than price at his lowest. mind you, we should have gotten a better return than lars eller. while he's a decent player and still in the league, he was never anything more than a 3C.
If Keefe was the reason the Leafs didn't win a cup, then they will be happy to see their 5 year cup drought ended.
Why are teams scared to offer sheet players
I don't think teams are, just hard to do in the cap era. I can't see Swaymen wanting to go to a team that's not competitive. Assuming I am correct, contending teams just don't have the cap space to really offer much more than what Boston would be willing to match.

I'm thinking it could either be Sturm or Woodcroft as the front runners for the Sharks head coaching job. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if it's someone else instead.

Assuming no controversy happens, after this year, I'd say he safe for at least next year. I can't see the wheels just falling off without a good reason (lose 3 or 4 players to season long injury as an example. )
Keefe can do better with a team that isn't overloaded with forwards and underloaded with D that can play 200' and score.

If you can't blame the players, fire the coach.
Keefe gets all his Leafs loot, spends no time unemployed, and gets a far better, more stable work environment.

He doesn't get any money from Toronto, that contract is now void, if he had signed for less in New Jersey then Toronto would be on the hook for the difference, but that didn't happen, Toronto doesn't have to pay him a penny

The NHL coaching carousel is ridiculous. There should definitely be young guys getting shots. If a guy doesn't work somewhere, and then he doesn't work at the next place, and then he doesn't work at the next place, why would he keep getting chances? I clearly don't understand the nuances of NHL coaching.
Everyone shitting on Keefe coming to NJ, every other insider coach sucked.
Woodcroft has only 2 full seasons, extremely unexperienced.
Gallant has temporary success, at first his new team does well, then an immediate drop off after.
McLellan has no sustained consistency throughout his coaching career.
And Berube is lucky. He came to St Louis with little experience to an aging and still aging team.
Keefe has a great coaching record from the CCHL with 5 championships, A Calder Cup in the AHL, and every year of coaching making the playoffs, CCHL, OHL, AHL and NHL.
And by signing Keefe, that still keeps the Sullivan conspiracy alive were a trade between them.
The only other options were former Devils, which you had to try and convince Stevens out of retirement, take a shot in the dark on Driver who has only coached high School, or go for University coaches like Gionta or Pandolfo, with the former coaching at his home town and the latter only coaching for his 3rd season.
If the Devils can't get Sullivan or Stevens, Keefe is a good option.

@@doaftheloaf The problem with Muller is that while being a great player for the Devs, he had an attitude problem which caused Lou to look for a new captain. He is respected by fans, but not entirely beloved.

but I think the devils could have done better than the guy who consistently failed with the leafs.

Nothing, I don't think. If he makes the playoffs for the next 4 or 5 seasons in a row, I think Devils fans would take that. Also think the Devils are a better built team (just not as far along in their development) than Toronto was when he took over. Also, I'm sure he learned quite a bit being of what works and what doesn't. At least in Jersey, if he criticized a player the team won't make him go out to the media the next day and apologize.

Lindy Ruff never had a goalie in NJ his entire tenure that was over .900 save percentage.
I think Keefe is a good coach and, along with GM Dubas, was made the fall guy at Toronto. Toronto's myriad of playoff failures in the past 7 years must be blamed on the players, not the coach or GM.

Woodcroft was right there. Im not a fan of the hire, then again im really anti Fitzy. He coaches soft, and Devils need to be tougher can he do that? No, remember keefe loves to call out players but he takes it all back, not what NJ needs. Hope he learns how to be tough and doesnt think he has to back peddle on calling someone out like Luke when he is a cone in his own zone. He better not bring his clueless assistant too, get new one. I would love if they could get Jessica Campbell. maybe Duggan,Woodcroft? idk whos good but also FIRE Taylor and the goalie coach.
Toronto's upper management made him take it back. That was not Keefe's decision.

Firs, as a Devils fan, not happy about Keefe. He can't coach a soft team, and went from one to another, so, not impressed. As far as viewership, it's absurd I pay for ESPN plus, and can't watch the games, so, i'm unfortunately not adding to those numbers.. 🙄

NJD changed whole teams, coaches, GM's, and the building. right now the only thing they yet to try is exorcist. because that emo team loser mentality crumble take over for a decade now every time a goal is disallowed, or when they so often wait for half game to pass to start scoring after being scored on more than once, to just fail to catch up to the score in last 10 minutes.
