COMMENT: What is your opinion on the aesthetic of the Gillender Building - was in beautiful and ahead of its time, or was it a bit too “early” and its slenderness stood out against other Gilded Age buildings?

When you look at old pictures of the NYC skyline with all the beautiful, interesting architecture, and then see it today with all the plain ugly buildings, you realize how much the city has declined and how many beautiful buildings have been lost in the name of progress.

A time when buildings were beautiful, and architects were skilled and thoughtful.
I personally believe we truly understand just how much we have lost.

The Gillender Building assumed business was a steady state environment when it was instead a dynamo of near constant growth. In a world of near limitless ambition there is an equal requirement for limitless space fueling said limitless ambition. The Gillender Building forgot this most important business tenant. The Gillender Building was designed to satisfy old requirements locked in time. The Gillender Building made to reflect its moment was at once totally new, stunning & thus quite obsolete in short order. In NYC Gillender Building times or today the relentless corporate pursuit of profit has no eye for beauty, no sense of community & un-apologetically offers no guarantee of longevity! That's Timeless New York City Truth!

At what point, if any, did automobile parking become consideration?
