speaking as a firefighter, with several fatality fires under my belt, this effect looks scarily realistic, it was more realistic without the black wash at the end, but still.. scarily realistic
I love listening to him attempt to describe his process when you can tell that it essentially just comes down to him saying "Experiment, have fun, play and do what looks good to you". Frank rules.
It is hard to quantify the time it takes to dry because it's based on how thick the latex is applied. The thinner it is the quicker it will dry and vice versa.
Glad Frank mentioned using tissue paper. I always go with a combo of tissue & cotton to get that perfect separation between skin/random flesh & muscle. I also like to use cut up paper plates or thin poster board for skull fractures. For an extra fun twist fill said fracture with dyed oatmeal smothered in corn syrup & randomly pick it off your head & eat it in front of people. For edible wet ends on torn limbs, I recommend a combo of the same trick with the addition of Fruit by the Foot or other fruit wrap candy sheets. Horrifyingly ugly, deliciously sweet.
Great video! Seems like something even I could do! Love how Norm keeps "regrounding" the artsy dialogue to maintain the sequence of steps. As a newbie (and this tutorial seems geared to newbies given the easy techniques and common materials), I find pros can busily work on a project and forget to talk about it, or talk in very vague terms.... They're almost *too* familiar with it. Thanks Norm!!
A good trick that we do in makeup is to add colors in the latex itself. Food color works well and what you get are layers of color that are semi transparent so it is deep layerd.
One thing that you could also do is before you apply the black coat do a spray over with clear spray resin which will give the flesh a wet look and help pop the color more then when you apply the black for the chard burnt look it gives it a bit of a juxtaposition of wet underline flesh with dry chard flesh. Great tutorial and thx.
BlobVanDam Sadly they edited out the following bit, where Norm asked "oh, so human lips are technically a sphincter?" and Frank replied "no, just _your_ lips", followed by an awkward silence.
You can also use pieces of rubber/latex glove to create hanging "Fleshy" parts. I have experimented with various materials to create fake dried skin and muscles and I have used fine cloth fabrics and thin sheet latex to give some VERY realistic looks!
This was very useful I’m working on a film and there’s a big scene with fire yes it’s a horror movie and I was trying to find a way to make a burnt head but now I can do that and other parts thank you guys
Frank is great, this resembles some of the mummies that I saw down in Mexico at the Mummy Museum in Guanajuato, and thank you Norm for having this channel
Lol, I love tested and Norm, and granted I have no clue what Norm's background is, but I love watching these "technical guy interfacing with artist" videos. Norm asking, "So what's the process, what heuristics do you follow, do you put a base coat first?" And Frank's just like, "Well.. you just kinda feel it out and let it do what's gonna do."
I have made these before, just as he is the video, however I added latex paint (brownish colors) to my liquid latex to tint the base of the flesh to the base color I wanted. Saved tons of time when painting.
Keep trespassers off your property. Out of sight of the road and other neighbours etc place skull in areas like compost heaps, below the fence (where thieves might climb over!) Place bullet holes and crossbow bolts for added effect! Occasionally add rotting pet food etc when available (if you are far enough away from neighbours) Might be advisable to inform the local cops what your new property protection scheme entails- so you don't get bluelight alarm calls at 3am in the Morning from your local S.W.A.T or AOS unit intent on finally finding the local serial killer!
WOW Frank!! I hardly recognised you after watching you on face off. Im so glad our doing well :) I have gained 100% respect for your talent and your attitude towards your work. proud of you ;)
Agreed. Background music is way less enjoyable than building sounds. If someone wants music, bring it up in another tab. Let us have our building sounds. :)
Thanks for this awesome video! I am actually redoing this right now, with a 12Euro Resin Skull from China, some Cotton and Latex. As an Archaeologist I am pretty fascinated with prehistoric preservation techniques of corpses, like different methods of mummification, but also recent forms of ritural modification of human remains... well... and I admit that I am just one of this weird people who have always had an obsession with all kind of morbid stuff. I am just creating my first "Mummy-Skull", for my kind of "19th Century-Stile Cabinet" at home, and it comes really handy, that I am having a seminar right now at an Institute for Forensic Medicine. I will definately hand this tutorial to some of my coleques, from whom I know that they would love to redo it!
"Fresher"??? HAHAHA. I believe the terms Frank is looking for are "less dessication" and perhaps "newly dead". XD Thank you for agreeing to be on this channel, dude! I positively adore this tutorial but for one thing -- Chan. He's kinda annoying and in the way during this tutorial. I recognize the fact he's there to ask questions that we, the audience, would wish to know and to facilitate continued interest. Usually I dig his "twerpy younger brother" vibe, as I think it's kinda charming. This time, however? Mebbe in a different video have him actually build his own beginner [version of what's being done] alongside the actual artiste? Anyway, thank you again for such a great video treat!
I like the build his own skull idea. It would be interesting to watch both take shape at the same time. Also he would ask questions differently because he would see the situation in a hands on action way. ..... I would have added a light dry brush with red at the end around the Frontal and Temporal lobes for a more realistic look.
Asha Wheeler I would've added just 2-3 washes of yellow, probably between the brown and red washes to give it more depth. I also would like to do the final touches like you suggested -- only with paints with a higher gloss finish to give it that "fresher" essence that Frank mentioned. :)
Gabe Escobar Also, what the fuck do expect? Can you imagine working intently for more than twenty minutes with this? 12:35 Norm says the most obvious shit over and over again that it's fucking unbearable, I wouldn't have the patience to deal with it. Frank talks about the angling tissue and making anatomic muscle groups play a part, and then Norm says "this is tissue," WELL NO SHIT DUMBASS! He's an idiot, and if you want proof watch the cardboard VR video, he is a complete dumbass.
Christopher Rapczynski +1 Norm is very annoying and he drags the show down. I just skip some episodes which may even be interesting if done with someone else. I think he tries too hard and ends up annoying
New on this channel. Great video, love this kind of work. Just one thing, the video it´s full of silence moments, background music can make this even better.
Love spending a day off binge watching Tested and Punished Props Academy. Is it just me or does Frank Ippolito strike anyone else like Bill Doran's evil twin?
You should sell these I would really love to buy one. I don't have the time or patience to make this. But it looks really cool! also I know i'm a few years late.
I love latex and cotton balls for my corpse faces because I can sculpt it, but when it comes to big coverage, like the torso especially nothing beats plastic dropcloth and a heat-gun.
I am glad that it is some time after dinner! I made a mummified head in papier mache long time ago. I is not as gruesome as this but I keep it in the garage, otherwise I get nightmares. I also made a pair of hands. One of them hangs on the wall.
a cheaper latex for a lower budget is Elmer's glue. works about the same. just have a hairdryer or a heat gun. if you push the heat gun real close to the glue it will bubble up and give you a nice burn-looking thing.
If you are using the standard type or regular Elmer's Glue you would need to keep the skull from getting wet. Regular Elmer's Glue is water soluble. Too much black on the end process. You had it perfect until you "rubbed" the black all over. The black should have been applied sparingly on the outside fringes (showing red underneath), just like real burned flesh would appear. Other than that, great job!

Totally agree! I’m glad your out there, but sorry for what you’ve had to endure. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
One of my relatives is actually a retired fire chief
Thanks for your service. Now I know what not to add to the skull when I make this based on your info. : )
There's not a char to the skin or does the skin just completely melt off by the time someone dies in a fire? There aren't charred bits left?
I love listening to him attempt to describe his process when you can tell that it essentially just comes down to him saying "Experiment, have fun, play and do what looks good to you". Frank rules.
"At some point it starts to look less like a skull and more of a head."
"That's... that's kinda the point."
"How long do you have to work with the latex?"
"Until it starts drying"
Who'd have thought?
I think he meant " how long? " in terms of minutes
Nate S My experience with liquid latex is it dries in about 20-30 minutes....faster with dryer of coarse
Lmao

This is great stuff! I'm gonna put a couple of these on poles at the end of my driveway.
That was pretty awesome. Is it just me or does Frank always seem annoyed with Norm whenever they do one one of these episodes?
I think its just Frank personality... Frank was in Some kind of tv-show not sure wich and he was a complete douchebag there he seems much nicer now
That makes sense. He just has that look on his face like, stop asking me so many fucking questions, even though they're making a tutorial.
