There were so many cringey parts, so I remember most of it, unfortunately.
The only thing I remember about this scene when I saw it in theatres was I was so excited to hear this song from Jennifer. But at the crescendo her voice was overshadowed by the orchestra. It was the part that she was going to really belt it out ‘TOUCH ME’ and the freakin’ trumpets / drums/ violin or whatever decided to BLLAAAAMM 🎺 🎺 🎻 🥁 🎻 at the same time
The words to this song make me cry every time. Any time I see a beat up cat, afraid of humans, weary, I think of the words to this song and imagine how different that cat's life could be if someone would just "touch her". Excellent performance by Jennifer.

Cats was not a fantastic movie. However, I think Jennifer Hudson killed it with this rendition of Memory. I wasn't familiar with the film or the broadway show when I watched this version of Cats, so when she sang, "Touch me, it's so easy to leave me," it brought tears to my eyes. I just wasn't expecting it, something so raw and vulnerable. You could truly feel her giving it her all.
The whole point of memory is that grizabella wants to be touched and accepted back into the jellicles; yet victoria literally touches her multiple times

Victoria wasn't a jellicle at that point. She was welcomed into them at the end after Grizabella had moved on to be reborn again

From Elaine Paige to Sara Brighton and Jennifer Hudson they have all brought to light the heart and soul of this amazing character. Each was amazing and exactly as they should be. I myself humbly say thank you to all of them for this song that has held my heart since I was 15 years old.

RIGHT? IT LEGIT BREAKS THE WHOLE POINT. also where tf is Jemima? Like I get Victoria is the one to touch her AFTER GRISABELLA IS DONE SINGING, but Jemima is super important. She helps Grisabella get back into the Jellical cats and sings the part of memory that encourages Grisabella is belt out singing “touch me, it’s so easy to leave me”. Like bro did director never watch CATs 😭
out whole movie these are the only words i can remember. Jennifer hudson blew it out of the water with this song, and the emotion she brought. Splendid ^_^ truely it was amazing!

While i adore Jennifer Hudson, i think she sang it a bit too rough for want of a better expression, through the song. Take a look at the version with Elaine Paige. Just the look in her eyes brought me to tears. Jennifer Hudson is one of my favorite artists ever but I liked the Elaine Paige version WAY better.
Honestly, Jennifer Hudson and Jason Derulo were great - their vocals are to notch.
Had they actually embraced the spiri of the original (no CGI, make it a stage-esque show, NO Corden or Rebel) this could've been better.

Since they already changed up the story from the original anyway, I would have thought this part more endearing if Victoria had gotten in front of Grizabella and hissed at all the cats hissing at her warning them to back off.

I can see where you are coming from. I think the reason that they didn't is because Victoria is meant to represent innocence and purity, and aggression, even when used to defend, may break this narrative.

I have to say, I LOVE Jhud, she’s hands down one of the best vocalists of my generation. That being said, growing up obsessing over the broadway performance I would watch on VHS over and over and over again, I absolutely HATE everything about this movie. I hate the creepy humanoid CGI cat people. I hate the vocals of the girl singing with her. I hate 95% of her performance of this song. I don’t ever want to see/hear this again.

"I was beautiful then." ? She looks just fine in this version, in the stage play her coat, her makeup her hair, all gave the impression of a cat who was barely hanging on to life, either due to surviving an accident or whatever. Here, the lyrics just don't work.

She's on key, but like the rest of the movie, it's not good enough.
I get it, she was going for a different interpretation, but this does not hold a candle to Elaine Paige's classic version.

Unpopular opinion, but I didn’t feel the Elaine Paige version at all. She can sing for sure, but it felt routine.
This version sounds desperate, terrifying, lonely, melancholic.. Especially how she almost cries while singing it.
This is my favorite version of the character.

I feel like the makeup artist were rough around the edges.
Not bad (6.5/10), the faces may not align sometimes, but the singings not bad.

THIS is how this song was to be interpreted and emoted. Not the yelling/showy stereotypical “Broadway” voices of the ‘80’s (minus Buckley). It’s perfect with the one “belt” that Jennifer does here. Perfect.

it's a movie-version, it's okay that she's not doing perfect, but rather a little rough, and emotional(ly unstable), it's just the style the movie was going for, and that's... you know, not great, but OKAY. so, to me jennifer hudson did a good job here, and i like her version. it's good enough to distract me from the overall design (but not good enough to distract from the lacking plot here, because they butchered the story a little, especially concerning her)

Everyone hating on this couldn't hold a CANDLE to Jennifer. She's one of the greatest vocalists of our time and did a phenomenal job woth this. Based on her ‘Send in the Clowns’ which left all other interpreters in the dust, we are much the poorer for never having heard it.

That growl on "All alone" is fantastic. It's a great vocal performance, but for some reason I don't feel the emotion. Her acting is sort of generically sad, with no specificity.

The negative backlash against a wonderful Tom Hooper's film and its subsequent box office failure is reminiscent of mass insanity and a total misunderstanding of the difference between cinema and theater. And this scene is great. Better than Jennifer Hudson, no one sang this great song.

It's not just the movie that is bad; Cats is Andrew Lloyd Webber's worst musical by a long shot. When I saw the Broadway show, I literally nearly fell asleep in the theater. When it was over I left shaking my head, wondering how this show got so many accolades and had so many people clamoring to see it. I'm a huge Andrew Lloyd Webber fan... but this one was downright boring. "Memory" wasn't even intended to be in the original play, but it was included at the last minute because the show needed something more focused. And as we know now, it turned out to be the only part of the play that anyone remembers. JHud really killed it in this movie version; I've never heard anyone else come even close to singing Memory with this much feeling and passion.
I find it interesting when people say that the musical is so boring. I actually think most musicals in general are incredibly boring, but Cats is one of the few that I find incredibly interesting and really beautiful. It does something different while also having fun creatively with it. I think people don't like it because it is more abstract and concept/dance driven. It's the same reason why people find ballets boring, there's a lot of ballet elements in Cats.

This is horrible. I came in expecting so much, especially after reading comments. This is sad, sad, sad! You know they lowered the key on this? Shes singing about an octave lower, and the fake opera voice? Not her fault, this was all on the director. But a sad excuse for a performance on this song.
I love, love, love Jennifer. But boy, I think this was terrible acting and staging. I blame the director. Jennifer needed help. Watch Betty Buckley. Everything Betty did was cat-like--movements, emotion, posture. Nothing about Jennifer's performance resembled a cat other than the costume and make-up--and even those resembled a nondescript stuffed animal more than a cat. Not trying to be funny but Jennifer seemed more like a needy old dog than a once-glorious and now sad and abandoned cat.
