Thank you so much for that! I was thinking the same thing. Judy had such a big heart and fantastic sense of humor and she really enjoyed/appreciated talent. That’s why she had some of the greatest stars on her tv show - loved to embrace her fellow artists!

Some of the show was truly naughty, and all of the show was sutble but she took it successfully to many places with great success.

You're using 2020s lenses on 60 year old material: parody and topical humor are not "low blows" beneath her or any other comedian. There was a steady New York theater crowd then who likely saw everything she's referencing (and possibly including some of those performers).
I never found Carol Channing to be much of an entertainer. I think she was limited in her singing (if you can call it singing) and her impression of Garland is poor at best. I did see her in the musical "Lorelei" and thought she and the show were terrible, but there are others who think she was fantastic, so to each his own.
You’re being TOO literal. This was a character that was drawing on several leading ladies of the time, listen to the audience they get the references and laugh. Maybe it’s just to sophisticated for your expectations
As you say, she was a star in her own right and at that time period, so she didn't NEED to specifically imitate Betty or Judy or the several other stars who were doing the comeback circuit then, she played it as if she herself was a doing a comeback.

Making fun of a Great Star shows sour grapes. Judy's run in all of her 3 Palace runs, broke records. If I didn't read the title of this video clip, I would never have thought she was impersonating Garland. This isnt entertaining. But I wanted to post my thought. Judy's legend thank God can endure these petty insults.

Her father was gay, and was the main source of kindness in her young life. She may have been attracted to similar types (Freudian).
