  • This video explains how to change the engine oil and filter for a 2018 Harley-Davidson Softail Sport Glide (FLSB). The process should be similar across the entire softail range. Make sure and check your owner's manual for your specific model.

    Good video but a couple things I learned doing mine. First, check the oil before draining. That was always a habit from when I worked at a local jiffy lube. You’d be surprised how many people would come in and there wouldn’t be any oil on their dipstick. But then reinstall dipstick tight. Second remove the drain plug, then remove dipstick. The reason here is that when you get drain plug out, you won’t get a huge flow of oil at first and have to worry about splashing on the floor. Of course it’s a good idea to have old newspapers or cardboard under drain pan to limit spillage. Also, if you do drop plug in pan, it’ll be easier to find with slower flow.
    From my experience, any major name with oil will be fine, be it HD, Mobil1, Castrol, Valvoline, Redline, etc. they’ll all be fine if they’re made for an air cooled vtwin.

      All great points, best tip is drain plug first then dipstick. The initial drainage is nice and slow and keeps the hot oil from splashing on your hand and all over.

    Great Vid, the only thing i do different is that i dont remove the dipstick till the oil is flowing into the drain pan, it just slows the original flow so less hot oil over your hand. keep up the good work

      And... if the oil is slow to come out, this confirm that your valve guide seals are sweet.. then you can loosen that dipstick.. 👍

    Great video, for what service is? For 5000 miles? and It could be the same case for a Softail Street Bob 2019?. Many thanks, well done

    • @DCyclemoto
      @DCyclemoto  4 роки тому +1

      This was for my 5K service. Street Bob may have some different fluid amounts and torque specs. The Sport Glide is kind of its own monster in a lot of ways. The owner's manual and service manual should have all the right info for you.

    • @adminadmin9997
      @adminadmin9997 3 роки тому

      Street bob says start off with just 4 quarts and then fill from then there if needed. I ended up putting between 4.25-4.50 quarts in my street bob. 5 quarts for sure is overfill.

      Hey D, I just looked for the Castrol oil and it doesn’t look like it’s available in Canada, but online they want $61.00 US or $80.00 CDN per quart, YIKES ! Is that for real ?

    • @DCyclemoto

    When checking oil level on HOT, is the engine turned OFF? If Yes how long do you wait until checking the dipstick?

    • @DCyclemoto
      @DCyclemoto  3 роки тому +1

      Yes turn it off. Wait a few minutes after as oil is going to be dripping back into the oil pan. I will check after a few minutes and then at around 5.

  • @adminadmin9997

    Hey D-Cycle! Two questions for ya as my 5k is due and winter is soon to be here: What O-ring did you use for the drain plug? I'd rather get a few from E-bay and save a few $$$ opposed to the dealer but E-bay didn't list much on fitment. Second, I saw you did a primary oil change as well for the 5k service. My service manual says it isn't due until 10k for my Sport Glide. Is that something you did for preventative reasons? Thanks and keep up the great videos!

    • @DCyclemoto
      @DCyclemoto  5 років тому +3

      I bought my o-rings at the dealer. I drop all three fluids since my bike is put away over winter. Just precautionary and it gives me the warm and fuzzy feeling with fresh fluids in my bike for spring. Thanks for watching!

    Shouldn’t cold oil level be at the mid mark? Hot oil level can be at top mark from what I am reading in manual

    • @DCyclemoto
      @DCyclemoto  2 роки тому

      Is your manual for an M8?

    • @RidersUnited
      @RidersUnited 2 роки тому +1

      @@DCyclemoto yes my manual is HD OEM for my 2019 Heritage. Shows top oil level for cold engine is in the middle of the dipstick scale and for hot engine it can go all the way to max hot mark.

    • @DCyclemoto
      @DCyclemoto  2 роки тому

      I never get it to full because oil sits in other areas of the system that won’t make it back to the pan during a check. As long as I am half way to 3/4 on a hot check, I’m good.
