I had no idea that pantyhose were so controversial. I'm actually glad to see a number of comments in support of them. I've never been a fan of nude pantyhose (and I've been wearing them for many decades). I always have some color to them. My go-to is a taupe color. And I also wear both sheer and opaque black. I know that not everyone will agree with me, but I think (and I have always, ever since the hose-less leg first made its appearance--for me overseas before the US) the bare leg is frumpier than the leg with hose unless you have very good legs and are very young. I have great skin, so for me, personally, it is not a matter of a lack of self care. But hose provide a more finished, sleek look. Yes, closed-toed shoes.
I am 100% in support of nylons, but age isn't necessarily a factor. In my early 20's, a workmate stopped wearing nylons as soon as she could catch a couple days of sun in March. Our company had a very strict hosiery policy back then, but everyone let her get away with it because her legs and feet were that perfect. About 5 years ago, a woman in her late 30's/early 40's grocery shopping in a short skirt - perfect legs! But when I was 14 and babysitting in the 70's, the child's grandmother - well into her 60s - was visiting. She got ready for bed and came out to join me for TV in a knee length night gown. She relaxed on the chaise lounge. I couldn't keep my eyes off of this woman's legs! Here she was white-headed, wrinkled face, tubby apple-shaped body with porcelain white, absolutely perfect legs! No age spots, no veins, no busted blood vessels, no cellulite- just perfection! I remember being totally amazed and more than a bit jealous.
I will always wear panty hose with formal wear especially, like a wedding. Sometimes black does not work with that. It looks more polished no matter how gorgeous your legs are naturally.
Sometimes it's just TOO COLD to go without something on the leg. And not ALL dresses look okay with a black stocking. I agree about the close toe shoe with stockings.
I have to disagree about the nude stockings. I am a professional in a relatively conservative environment with a dress code and I always wear nude tights in spring and summer and dark tights during the colder months. I have absolutely no problem showing my legs but i feel that nude tights give structure to my outfits and they make me feel more put together.
Same, I found the natural ones look great on me. I have scars from multiple surgery's and nude stockings help hid it. I do have to get light color nude ones because I'm pale. Personally I can slather my legs in creams or oils and they still will look blotchy and bump and scars dont go away. No I'm not going to resort to wearing makup on my legs. I can tell you unless your wearing a color that's to dark and wearing the right clothes that works for your body type. I dont see pantyhose as frumpy, I see classy and put together. Personally were I live it the teens that are wearing the black tights or blck pantyhose and I'm pail and I just dont like black pantyhose one me. I think its it's a personal preference however I did see something on Amazon called barely black that looks interesting.
I think it's a cultural thing as well - I keep seeing Americans dislike nude stockings while in my country almost everyone uses them, including younger women EXCEPT for open toed shoes. They're just very practical and they make everything look good. You just need the proper shade that matches your skin, or a very very thin den degree, like 10 - 20 den.
For those of us who live in colder climates wearing stockings is an absolute must. I rarely wear hosiery in the summer, except for certain occasions where it is more appropriate to have some coverage such as special religious ceremonies. I have never had a problem finding exceptional nylons that enhance the legs and are virtually undetectable. My advice is to stay away from shiny ones, match the colour, more or less, to your legs, and of course never where them with sandals. The right hosiery creates flawless, beautiful legs that can make those not wearing them look like country peasants by comparison. Perhaps I'm lucky living in a colder place where wearing nylons is the norm, and where I still get compliments from men telling me I have attractive legs-thanks to the magic of nylons!
Totally agree. I hate the bare leg look and bare feet in high heels is just gross. Summer time with sundresses and sandals it is ok to go bare legged, but I cannot figure out when or why it became popular to grease your legs up and go without hose. How do women stand wearing high heels all day with no hose on? Their shoes must need fumigated on a regular basis.
I wouldn't even wear a dress without stockings in winter or when i have to wear higher heels. I am from Europe and i never could understand why women in usa are so afraid of stockings because the place i come form women are very elegant and it is actually not common be in elegant dress without stockings unless it is deep hot summer but then you wear summer dress with sandal type of shoes anyway. Buying good matching stockings takes time so i guess many women are not patient enough. Also, most of usa is very warm climate so might be the reason, too why its not popular.
I am so glad that pantyhose are “out” and women are no longer feeling forced to wear stockings to please men. As a disabled senior, I could no longer get them on anyway.
The only time I've gotten a compliment on my legs (my back was turned) was when someone asked, "Who'se the girl with the legs???" I was younger, wearing black longer full shorts, with sheer black Hanes something pantyhose and black heels. I also swore by my Hanes. They hide a multitude of sins. Even some celebrities have really ugly knees and legs...
You have a great model like figure and even the frumpy style doesn’t look frumpy on you . The green top actually it seems to me that it’s even more flattering than the white one. That’s just me . You look excellent in everything. Thanks for the video
Exactly true! Erin you look perfecto in all of these clothes; maybe we need to see them on other models for a more realistic "Aha!" moment b/c you rock every single thing like a rock star model for real.
Your side-by-side videos are sooo helpful to me in understanding and remembering your tips for wardrobe building. I love it when you make jokes, like imitating a person with hands placed awkwardly in no-no sweater pockets: “Well, hello there.”
Haha! I'm glad that I made you laugh with that one...I feel like I'm here just talking to my friends, and often make myself laugh while filming! Thanks for watching! xo
If you have imperfect legs, spider, varicose veins, swollen, mottled, discolored legs, hose are a must and nude comes in many sheer tint shades to cover up flaws; a sundress or summer shift with sandals is the only time i would go without hose in the dead heat of summer...I remember reading about Jackie Kennedy showing up at a church in Florida in the 60's in a summer shift dress with sandals, a lace veil and BARE legs! What a stir she caused! Suits and formal dress fabrics require hose These are all great tips!
Love your “dump the frump” tips!!! (Though as a tall girl, I was glad to see capris become popular because most regular pants fitted me a couple of inches above the ankle off the rack. Finally looked like I was in style, not wearing high waters!). Seriously, love the advice about how to be stylish and youthful, rather than a old lady clutching at youth! I have been needing shoe ideas! That video at just the right time!!!
Great video, Erin! Aging can be tough, especially when so many stores seem to offer mostly frumpy options. You end up “settling,” and that often lowers your morale. Thank you for your valuable advice, and for the encouragement to be more selective when I go shopping. xo
My best best youthful-ish finds are at thrift stores. I can take them in slightly bc I sew. I can even make things BIGGER by cutting the side seams + sewing in wide grosgrain ribbon. That’s if I find that “what I’ve always wanted !” item. So fun. I also watch for cashmere items, which I resurrect
Important benefit of nude stockings: to avoid blisters on my feet when wearing a dress shoe. Nude seems a more seasonally appropriate color in spring and summer than black.
😉 Feel your pain! Wear the hose if it works for you. Think nude & black opaque hose can make an outfit more elegant & finished. Luckily, I lead a more casual lifestyle. ☀️In LA, it's too hot🌡& miserable to layer up in our heat🔥. Long for soft, loose, unstructured garments. Cropped pants are already a compromise for shorts that are now forbidden🚫. Give a girl a break. I do wear a lot of skirts, but full-length trousers are a rarity. Forget jeans or denim of any sort, prefer light-weight & breathable fabrics. 👣 Worse, my feet have only got more challenging with age. They don't look wide, but they don't fit most standard shoes any more. 😆Frustrating to find fit & fashion at an affordable price point. Plus, they are even more susceptible to blistering these days. I can wear flip-flops as indoor slippers to lounge about the house, but will get a blister in a nanosecond if I walk outdoors in any sandal for any "normal" (vs marathon) amount of activity. 🖤Love wearing those barefeet socks, but they only work in certain closed toed shoes (some ballerina flats, loafers, oxfords|brogues, pumps, espadrilles, sneakers, etc.) They come in thinner & thicker textures that work in different styles. Compared to going sockless, they do a decent job to help prevent blisters.💲Always hunt for these socks on sale. ✌😊🤙
I live in a subtropical/temperate climate (in a capital city) and we can wear them almost year round. In fact, I like that they kinda absorb perspiration, and I don't like slippery feet with any shoes. In the colder months, people wear more black and blue, darker ones compliment those colours nicely
I'm with you there. Most of the time I wear trousers (with socks) but when I wear a skirt then I wear tights (English English for pantyhose!) for warmth a lot of the year, but mainly because I hate wearing shoes without tight or socks, however hot the weather. Without them, if the weather's cold my feet are frozen and in hot weather they feel all sticky. Oh, and by the way, I have scars from thighs to feet after a car accident 30+ years ago and that's the least important reason for wearing them.
I love your videos. I am 56 and it took me a long time not to wear stockings -- when I was younger no one ever didn't wear stockings with a dress, after about age 18 unless it was summer and a very casual dress (certainly not to work or church). I was shocked when young women started wearing dresses without stockings to work, I thought it looked so unprofessional and childish. I'm finally catching up to the rest of the world but still wouldn't wear a skirt without stockings to work. i wear (yes) No Nonsense nude stockings. At least with the dresses I wear, they look nude on me, and I just FEEL more dressed up. For a while I tried black and opaque black stockings, but where I live no one wears them except in winter. I love tights and black hose in winter. But summer, going to work or to the theater or something formal-ish: it's those nude stockings.
I absolutely love your videos, I love your no nonsense approach, just the facts. They are fun and easy to watch and they are usually short, so there is no excuse not to get the info. Keep up the good work Erin, you are loved. Although I wish nude panty hose would come back, I do not like wearing bare legs in winter and there are still businesses that have a dress code where you have to wear panty hose. I also liked them because I wore the expensive ones that were like Spanx, I believe they were Givenchy (don't think they make them anymore). They made everything smooth when you wore a dress over them, no jiggling when you walked. I am sorry they are not in style anymore.
I came across your channel looking for petite clothing pointers. I am super practical and not really "into fashion", but find your videos SO USEFUL! I didn't know what I didn't know! Your explanations and sdie-by-side examples are clear, to the point, and practical. Thank you for doing what you do!
I am your mom's age, and definitely am watching your frump town tips. I lost 30 pounds, takes longer at my age, got more to go, but buying new clothes, these tips are great. Thank you Erin, in one email form or another I have been watching you since you were just beginning.
I love these videos! 🤗 One of the first things I did when I started working in a Corp HR position for a bank, was rewrite the mandatory pantyhose policy for women. If you wanted to wear them, then by all means you could continue to do so, but for those who preferred to wear “spanx” in lieu of full length hose, were finally set free! No show foot liners or peds as my mother used to say, are an option for those who dislike wearing shoes without hose or socks. A little self tanner on the legs, and you’re good to go! (In winter months I wear dark hose or tights.) ☺️
An unstructured cowl neck shirt can look nice on certain body types. I'm tall, thin, but quite curvy. A nice cowl neck that create a good t shape looks nice for me, but not necessarily for everyone.
Hi from down under. Love your explanations of how the style works. Especially the Capri pants! I'm shorter and so avoid them. Could you please make a video with we frumpy ladies modeling the correct styles. You being perfect isn't quite the same when modeling. I've subscribed and will keep my eye out. Thank you. Maureen.
I love it. I totally agree with the longer flare leg pants being more flattering. I started wearing them back in the 60s and never stopped. They came, went, came, went, and came again. They always felt right for my figure.
I completely agree with you, a flared or boot cut leg never went out of style as far as I'm concerned- they always looked more flattering than a pant with a straight or skinny leg. And nobody needs low rise pants!
I found the perfect pair of very thin (nearly invisible) nude stockings from"Falke" it's a German brand. They are the open toe ones with two different"sections". Nobody believes, that I'm wearing stockings but I am so comfortable with them because they blend my legs really beautifully - I often have bruises 🙈
The issue about trouser length is something I learned the hard way by trial and error (my legs are fine, but everyone can be made to look worse by the wrong fit/length!) and seeing you explain it here is great confirmation! I laughed out loud with your commentary about not needing to put hands in pockets (especially on your stomach, haha 😆). I totally agree about floppy cowl neck tops and have no idea why clothing companies market these monstrosities (usually aimed at middle-aged and older ladies). Loved that off-shoulder sweater though! Stay well, Erin xo
Mystery of the capri length solved! ty!! I'm petite and capri's are a pain to find the right length. Great suggestion too for the pantyhose, black sheer. loved the booties you had with that skirt too
I have very fit arms. But when I wear a sleeveless like that green one, I look like a construction worker. Also as far a capris, you’re so right! I see so many ladies wearing the crop work out pants to the gym - that stop right below their knees. It makes them look so short and cutoff. They look terrible! The 7/8 length is so much more flattering on everyone. Great video and spot on!
Wow. You are blowing my mind- completely changing how I see and wear my clothes. I’m beginning to play my own versions of “bad, better, best”. And, I’m in day two of purging and editing my closet and wardrobe- I see you tossing the frumpy shoes - “ bye bye!” Thank you 🙏 for advocating for self care and to be our best selves!! 💕 You “digging in” and explaining the why of so many important details! My outfit was so cute yesterday, I felt great, and now I try to make sure that I feel good in everything I wear - even my cozy loungewear- it’s making such a difference in my overall frame of mind . Xoxo
Erin, you live in a cold area, so my question is how do you keep warm in sweaters with exposed shoulders? I keep seeing this look for winter and just don’t understand it. A reason to wear a sweater is to keep warm!
Yes, that one shoulder sweater is unwearable. If it was warm enough to bare a shoulder, it wold be far too warm to wear a sweater on the other one. Additionally you’d have to deal with some strapless or adhesive bra.
It’s amazing how little changes can make or break an outfit...sometimes I would look in the mirror and think “something” just doesn’t look right, but didn’t know why. These tips help. Thanks for sharing!
Wow….I have been in the fashion industry for years, but you remind and teach me tips that I “should “ know, or you remind me to pay attention! You are rocking this, thank you,
Awesome points! African shea butter is THE BEST moisturizer for legs, arms, face... I live on the west coast now and SO miss my fellow "tennis shoe" wearers...what the heck are "sneakers?"😆😜 I was in Italy and fell in love with all the white Addidas, etc. with sweats/jeans and camel hair coats💜 Timberlands were being worn by EVERYONE of all ages...from Rome to Naples. It was awe inspiring, indeed.
I just went through my closet today and googled “are capris in style”? Because I love them so much and they look so good on me. I think it’s because I’m tall 5’ 9” and slim, so they work for me. The only length that looks hideous is when they hit right at the knee cap. I live on the Florida east coast too, so the capris stay!😂
@@dawnlannin2963 amen. i thought the same thing...gee, maybe i WANT to look shorter. and as she will say, wear what you are comfortable in. i wear almost everything she says is a no no. guess what...who cares! i am comfy in it and if a frump i am then a frump i will be.
I'm sorry, but I disagree with the "perfect" length of pants. Those look like what we call high-water pants. And they would really be high-water on me, at 5'10".
The trouser length she describes as “perfect” looks bad on me. It looks as if my trousers shrunk in the wash. My inseam in jeans is 33”, and too-short pants look ridiculous on me.
Hi Erin, as always, I enjoy your videos very much. You are right about thick pantyhose making us look frumpy. HOWEVER, more than getting the right color, one needs to choose the right denier. Denier is the thickness of the silk or nylon used to make the stocking. Denier 10 to 20 are the thinnest and sheerest, but usually they are bit on the delicate side. There is something very, very refined and elegant (and sexy) of using the perfect pantyhose that makes legs look wonderful. I agree, wearing black, off-black and in general a darker, very sheer color is more modern. In a professional setting, the polish of a pair on pantyhose is unrivaled; keeps legs warm from intense air conditioning and in the winter, helps to give legs a healthy color. With ALL else, I agree, agree, agree!
@@rosamermaid6984 The pockets were placed too high. Would have been adorable if they were lowered to near the bottom, and been more useful. I have some, and I DO often naturally put my hands into them.
Exactly why I look for them. Those pockets were on the tummy, not the hip. I have not yet seen a video that plays to the inverted triangles like us, combined short body, no waist, with super thin legs with a short calf and huge kneecaps and bony shins. You could slice cheese on my shins. All those 'various body types' drawings and commercials always have legs with shape, and a good balance of muscle and fat regardless of the body shape.
After I started my own UA-cam channel and I'm seeing myself on camera regularly - I am very aware of the frump factor. This video is perfect timing for me. Thank you :)
Details are really important in fashion! I had a cowl sleeveless blouse like this one and could not figure out why it didn't look so flattering. Thank you for that explanation.
I have learned so much from you Erin! You have definitely upped my fashion game. I was totally surprised about nude stockings, though. I think it looks so tacky when women don't wear hosiery with their skirts and dresses (apart from the summer season) and I think that even nude hosiery looks far better than bare legs. I love how you always stress doing what is comfortable for us, though.
If you love them, go for it. I used to feel the same way, but over the past decade or two we have seen panyhose fade away and bare legs become much more mainstream. Where you live may also influence your opinion on nude pantyhose. xo
@@BusbeeStyle I agree with your new take on pantyhose. Bare legs do look better now that I saw it demonstrated in your video. Thank you for your expert tips :)
I wear casual + cute: tan knee-length Cabela’s cargo-style skirts w/mary janes, bare bronzed legs. In winter: w/ white footless tights + all kinds of boots: rubber boots, fashion motorcycle boots, kick-ass white boots, w/different lengths of down puffers or layered rain parkas ( Portland, OR, is rainy + chilly in winter). For church, nicer short skirts… also layered wool sweaters over turtleneck tops or good button down shirts
What do you do when your skin is so thin that you have to wear pantyhose to avoid blisters? And how do you wear sandals in summer? My skin just gets sandpapered off by nearly any shoe I wear, and I've tried many different materials!
You are SO amazing!! Thank you for saying the things I need to hear!!! I have MS and even though I am "only" 60, I hid my body for a long time under voluminous clothing that made me look 20 years older and 20 pounds heavier. You have helped me come out from under all that fabric!!💕💕💕
'Legg's sheer elegance nude.' Pantyhose is not just to cover up legs. It's to smooth things out, hide panty lines and helps shoes feel better. As an older woman I was taught that a lady is not properly dressed without them. There are also sheer toe with single seam that can be worn under toes if you're wearing a nice sandal with heels for those who can't go without.
"Now I know why I hated them on me" OMG ME TOO. I have 2 pair that are SOOOO comfortable in fit and material, but I have always "felt" kind of frumpy in them. Knew they weren't my best look, but sometimes, like a Costco run, I didn't care. In a hot, humid climate, they will probably stay, but for around the house and when I TRULY don't care. Because sometimes I just don't. :-D
No Nonsense Stockings "Tan!" works for me! Thank you Erin..your well explained videos and yes..no. check off is something that really helped me ..it is so true look better..FEEL BETTER! Bless!
Wonderful tips. About pockets-I sew them shut on my jeans, especially front pockets. After sewing the front pocket shut, I cut off the inside of the pocket if its made so I can. It really slims the silhouette.
The only thing I can't agree with is the colour of tights. Black tights/stockings, even sheer ones, don't look good with most pale skirts. The only thing that made that particular outfit look frumpy were the open toed walking sandals with that floaty skirt. However, she can look good in anything!
Don’t like the one shoulder sweater, why expose a shoulder when it’s cooler! I agree no pockets on the hips. Couldn’t agree more about the pantyhose, I hate them! I have one pair for a dressy occasion as my legs are less than perfect! Very helpful video, thanks Erin.
I love a cowl neck- but that top you showed was a perfect example of a style I used to wear years ago that did nothing for me!! But I thought it did. And the avoiding large prints- so helpful. When I see cute bold designs, I always think- 'wait, what would Erin say?'
Thoroughly agree with all of these Erin, thank you! I have no idea why clothing manufacturers put some of the most unflattering things on womens clothing. RUDE!!! lol
I could go on and on about clothing styles. Like for plus size women, why do they have horizontal stripes on tops? Duh makes a person look even bigger and why do they have such blah drab colors, and whites and creams. A plus size woman shouldnt wear white or any light color, makes u look bigger. Sometimes I just want to be a fashion designer to correct all these errors.
@@lynnesmith1959 I'm plus size and I wear white sometimes, but I totally agree; it's like the clothes designers or the buyers pretend big women don't want to be pretty, in pretty styles and colors, like what are we being punished on purpose? I'm so grateful I found some online stores that have pretty clothes for larger women, with flattering styles, tailoring, and colors as well.
I'm 5ft tall and I've put on extra weight lately and feeling frumpy...ugh. Not stressing though...summer is here! About to drop the weight, hydrate, and start strength training! Your channel makes me feel pumped! Lol...luv it!!!
Hi Erin ~ When I am going to church, I feel more comfortable in pantyhose. My choice for the summer is Donna Karan's The Nudes Sheer Toeless Control Top Pantyhose. I feel like these are the 'Holy Grail' of pantyhose because of the light weight and super sheer color they're close to unnoticeable. By the way, love the blue dress your wearing...and it's sold out already! :) Darn it. lol Have a great day!
👏👏👏 living in Florida where it’s very warm most of the year, capris are a go to🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️BUT I have every intention of taking your advice to heart! Thank you! Seeing is believing!
Hanes classic net pantyhose in the nude color really nailed it for me. Since Hanes stopped making them, I've relied on other brands. Hanes has a new version, but I hate the fit. It's key to get the right nude shade to match or enhance your SKINTONE, and they must be MICRONET so it won't look like you're wearing fishnets. Avoid anything called SUNTAN. It's like foundation for your legs--the right one does you so many favors, and the wrong one is a disaster.
Hi Erin! I'm 57 and I love watching your videos. I also love your style; it's simple and chic! That's how I like it too. I find that as I get older, I like simple, chic and comfortable! For example, I'm really liking the more structured pieces of clothing nowadays. The stiffer cotton fabrics. The interesting sleeves such as the puff sleeves. It adds interest without being over the top. Keep up the good tips! 😊
Loved your tips.My favorite all-time go to was A button up white cotton blouse with folded down collar and not cuffed but rolled sleeves. The bottom piece was a modestly form fitting pair of black leggings that grazed the ankle.A black pump and a tuxedo cut black velvet vest and I could go anywhere and feel comfortable.I wore that same outfit with multiple combinations of accessories and never failed to get a compliment.1 good go to outfit frees up so much time.☺️
Interesting video. Your suggestions are very cultural. Some culture's fashion expect the bold and beautiful. I rock my large prints and get compliments alot. One has to know their body and be comfortable with their whole package. Looking my age is fine -- I don't want to look "younger". What's important is looking my best -- whatever that is 💕🌱
Hi Lorraine! Here's a video I did with my friend, Anna, who has a curvy body type: ua-cam.com/video/EYKQZWuln4M/v-deo.html Hope you find this helpful! xo
Regarding the pantyhose topic, I have fair skin, and I've found that colors like ivory or champagne look nude on me. The shade is so like my real skin tone that if I happen to get a run, it's not that noticeable even close up.
One way ticket out of frump town - love it lol 😊 Love the detail in this one - especially the first one detailing the length of the pants. I’m 5’2 and this is one I struggle with. Thanks so much for another fun and super helpful video! Xo Tammy Roy 🇨🇦
I only recently found your channel but have enjoyed it. I think this is my favorite video so far. The details are so important! That sleeve length tip is so right!
You crack me up I love your channel. 😍 the skirt with the black sheer tights and booties made you look so tall and chic. I thought it was a entirely diff outfit
I have never seen a jumper with pockets where they were on the illustrated garment, and if you have large feet, white trainers just make your feet look bigger, even if they are fashionable.
If nude hose is good enough for the royals, they're good enough for me. Moisturizer does not address all skin problems or keep you warm. Black does not go with everything. Also, you don't need to scrub off your hose at the end of the day like you do with leg make up.
Donna Karan used to make super sheer (and also easy to run because they were so delicate) pantyhose that just made your legs look better. I no longer need to wear stockings for work or warmth but these were great.
I could really see the contrast between some of those upgrades - pant length, monochrome and those pockets!! I remember you said in one video about a year ago to actually cut out the inside lining of front pockets on jeans and pants. So I followed your advice!! I have done it already on pants, shorts and even a dress. It makes the contour a lot more streamlined and flattering without them. I just don't get why pockets are in anything even a coat!! I recently bought a winter coat (I live in Australia and we have just come out of winter) and it has no pockets - it looks so much better than the ones I have seen with bulky pockets. It also adds to construction costs as well and if we actually put our hands in them, it will ruin the shape of the garmet and the look of the outfit. I totally agree with you that it adds unnecessary bulk to an area that we women are already blessed with.
Oh I need pockets where do I put my gloves, when getting out my keys and now I have to get put my mask somewhere short term . While the rain is pouring down
Heather Valentine I also live in Australia, and about a year ago decided quite the reverse: pants and jackets/coats MUST have pockets or I won’t buy them. It’s a bonus if tops have pockets, but generally that’s hoping for too much. However, I am a self admitted frump and comfort rules my life nowadays.
Hi Erin, would you try with capri pants to make the hem line even more up ? So it will be where the knee ends at smallest part. I think this can be great idea. Just a thought of mine.
I tried the Sally Hansen Airbrushed Legs leg makeup for the first time last NYE and it was amazing. It looked great, didn’t transfer and was fast! I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a natural leg color 😃
I will look for this when I have to wear a more "dressed-up" look (which is rare these days- most of my dresses are casual summer styles. I'd rather wear a dress than shorts or pants in hot weather!)- I have always hated pantyhose, but sometimes that look is necessary.
dsison18 some of us have no choice in the shoes we choose, for example if you have RA wearing a cool shoe is not happening,it has to be about comfort !!
Thank you! We are currently looking into ways that we can incorporate different body shapes and sizes on the channel. The logistics are a bit more complicated than most people realize. We have already started these changes on the website by hiring an amazing group of new writers who are all sharing their unique points of view! xo
Where have you been all my life:) I’m 65 and just now getting your info. When I was a kid, I went to Catholic school, Health Asst school, worked at a restaurant, then a hospital. Always wore uniforms and just winged it with clothes:) I did ok, but I know I did a lot of NOs, lol. I enjoyed this video and will check out more. Thank you so much❤️

I just ordered a button down cardigan which is going to be kind of long with big front pockets!
I love hose in taupe or sheer black. They make the legs look so toned.
@@cliftonmcnalley8469😅
I still wear pantyhose, too! Hose without toes have worked for me.
Yes. I live in southern California and no one ever wears pantyhose or even slips!
But sally hansen leg spray is great.
I agree. Doesn’t feel professional without nude stockings to work.
Please share what brand of hose works as undetectable. Would love to get some.
I love your “dump the frump” videos. Keep them coming.
Glad you like them! I sure will! xo
I am the poster of what not to wear in EVERY example. The Queen of Frump. And im still single! Hmm ??
You have a great model like figure and even the frumpy style doesn’t look frumpy on you . The green top actually it seems to me that it’s even more flattering than the white one. That’s just me . You look excellent in everything.
Thanks for the video
The green cowl looks sloppy and like someone is still wearing their clothes from the 70s.
Exactly true! Erin you look perfecto in all of these clothes; maybe we need to see them on other models for a more realistic "Aha!" moment b/c you rock every single thing like a rock star model for real.
I want more hips so I always look for pockets on my dresses.
It’s amazing how the wrong style of clothing can make you look (and feel) so frumpy. Thank you, great tips
Suits and formal dress fabrics require hose
These are all great tips!
Thank you for your valuable advice, and for the encouragement to be more selective when I go shopping. xo
You're SO welcome, Rebecca! I'm glad this was helpful! xo
All of us can look stylish at any age it just takes good advice to pull it off. This was a great video!
Bandaids?
I find hose make pumps more comfortable as well.
I like nude stockings and have found the more expensive thigh highs the best.
They make socks made out of stocking material that just go over the toe and heel. Very small
I agree! My feet would blister in shoes without pantyhose! Plus, they make my legs look smoother and less jiggly.
2 reasons to wear pantyhose: 1) warmth (live in north); 2) hate shoes or boots with bare (sweaty) feet
Carol Olson I am in the south where we have 1000% humidity!! I would rather pass out from heat exhaustion then give up my nude hose!!!
✌😊🤙
i prefer black knee socks.. im in iowa
I live in a subtropical/temperate climate (in a capital city)
and we can wear them almost year round. In fact, I like
that they kinda absorb perspiration, and I don't like slippery
feet with any shoes. In the colder months, people wear more
black and blue, darker ones compliment those colours nicely
Welcome! SO glad you're enjoying my videos!! xo
I am your mom's age, and definitely am watching your frump town tips. I lost 30 pounds, takes longer at my age, got more to go, but buying new clothes, these tips are great. Thank you Erin, in one email form or another I have been watching you since you were just beginning.
That's so sweet! I really do appreciate your support! xo
Like that you are informative without being judge mental. I agree with this all, cause wait till you get in your 60's.
I love that, Gretchen! Glad women have that choice! xo
Thank you! I did my thing as a corporate HR executive for most of my adult life, and now retired (sort of, kind of), but my policies live on. 😉
In dressing up, stocking/hose are a must for me. I hate my feet sticking to the shoes.
Powder in shoes prevents that
...I always wear hoisery....I detest that " bare leg look " when one is dressed up...it just looks as though someone forgot to put something on....
@@summerbreeze340 in open toe or sandals I don't think that would work. Be careful of powder many have now been traced to causing cancer.
Use Dr. Schols Odor-X spray on your feet and you'll avoid your feet sweating and your shoes will always smell clean.
An unstructured cowl neck shirt can look nice on certain body types. I'm tall, thin, but quite curvy. A nice cowl neck that create a good t shape looks nice for me, but not necessarily for everyone.
I agree. I am also tall, fairly slim but with a few curves. A cowl neck top works on me. It also gives an opportunity to wear a statement necklace.
I am in South Dakota. Stockings are a must from October thru April. Brrrrr
I'm in Norway lol. I've just started wearing mainly non-wool stockings under skirts this week
It almost gives me anxiety seeing Erin in the "frumpy" clothes! Love this series. I've learned a lot.
Thank you SO much, Janelle! xo
Especially the shoes! LOL
🤣🤣
I found the perfect pair of very thin (nearly invisible) nude stockings from"Falke" it's a German brand. They are the open toe ones with two different"sections". Nobody believes, that I'm wearing stockings but I am so comfortable with them because they blend my legs really beautifully - I often have bruises 🙈
Great tip! Thank you for sharing! xo
I second this. Falke make brilliant tights.
Falke is an amazing brand! They’re opaques are amazing quality.
❤🤙
I have bruises too from getting up 8n the middle of the night and fumbling my way around😆😆 and a few scratches too from play fighting with kitty.
I love this video! You’re providing fashion/dressing information that others are not doing in a reliable, truthful and encouraging way. Thank you!
That is SO sweet of you, thank you so much! ~Erin xo
Great suggestion too for the pantyhose, black sheer. loved the booties you had with that skirt too
Thank you for the low down on Capri pants! I never wear them and now I see why. Great video!
You're so welcome! I'm so glad this was helpful! xo
I wear capris at home or the gym only.
Yikes, there every wear in Florida!
I'm not a fan of capris, but I live in a warm climate and shorts are *so* not an option for me, so capris are my only option in the summer.
So finally the mystery about the length of capri pants solved for once and all. Thanks.
You're so welcome! I'm so glad this was helpful! xo
Yeghine Nazarian I find mid-calf length cooler. Being in fashion is great, but so is being comfortable.
Capris suck no matter how you are built. Goucho's where another idiot trend ,..Long time ago and very short lived .
No capris. Ever.
@@natashadickson4819 I agree, I don't think they do favors for anyone.
I totally agree...glad you liked this one! xo
They work if you’re tall & thin. I’ve got plenty of leg to spare 😂
Oh damn. Work out pants - didn't even think of it. My favorite most light-weight pair are crop, not 7/8.... Thanks for mentioning !
I will not wear “white sneakers”...they look clunky and make your feet look big- trendy, yes, but not for me!
That's ok...I love white sneakers, but you should go with a color that makes you feel great! xo
🤣🤣🤣🤣 you sound like me.
supergas are slim and still give you that modern white sneaker look (also very comfy!)
White sneakers cut up the length of the leg. I think a nude or very light strappy sandal looks much sleeker.
I have the pair Erin recommended and my 23 year old daughter told me I looked really chic! They are super comfy too. :)
Xoxo
That's amazing, Marisa! Thank you SO much for sharing! xo
Erin, you live in a cold area, so my question is how do you keep warm in sweaters with exposed shoulders? I keep seeing this look for winter and just don’t understand it. A reason to wear a sweater is to keep warm!
Exactly.
Yes, that one shoulder sweater is unwearable. If it was warm enough to bare a shoulder, it wold be far too warm to wear a sweater on the other one. Additionally you’d have to deal with some strapless or adhesive bra.
I can never wear exposed shoulders in the cold weather.
Menopause sweater.
And how do your wear a bra?
It’s amazing how little changes can make or break an outfit...sometimes I would look in the mirror and think “something” just doesn’t look right, but didn’t know why. These tips help. Thanks for sharing!
So true, Ellen! xo
Loved this! ❤️ Cracks me up how you keep the ugly shoes just for these videos. 🤣
Lol!
Wow….I have been in the fashion industry for years, but you remind and teach me tips that I “should “ know, or you remind me to pay attention! You are rocking this, thank you,
You are SO sweet, Laurie! Thank you! xo
I think it is a classic staple that looks good when worn at the length that is most flattering on the wearer so they are here to stay.
I’m tall too with long legs. I am not a capris wearer but needing to look taller isn’t an issue.
Thank you for sharing, Lourdes! xo
Thank you again for delivering us from frump town! You look so amazing in that blue!!
You are so welcome! Thank you, Jackie! xo
I think that cowl neck top looks great on you with your figure and arms!
Soooooooooooo adorable that YOU are your own model!!!!
Pockets on the hips are good for inverted triangles like me, with broad shoulders and tiny hips! :)
Me too! No hips or butt at all.
I though that top looked weird, manufacturers don't usually put pockets where they were placed. BTW, I loved the neck on it.
Erin, I really enjoy your videos. You give good tips and you're also funny! I like the straight-talk without coming across as arrogance.
Thank you SO much, Kaevin! xo
After I started my own UA-cam channel and I'm seeing myself on camera regularly - I am very aware of the frump factor. This video is perfect timing for me. Thank you :)
You're so welcome! Good luck! xo
Totally agree on avoiding the cropped leg look. It's hard to do it right. Thank you for sharing!!
Details are really important in fashion!
I had a cowl sleeveless blouse like this one and could not figure out why it didn't look so flattering. Thank you for that explanation.
Glad it was helpful, Terri! xo
You're just nailing it with these tips.
Everyone of them has caused me angst at some point not mention wasted $$$$. 💞
Thank you SO much, Deborah! xo
I am SO glad that you're enjoying my videos. You are stronger than you know! xo
I love how your hints and tips are made so they work for most people. Im 5'7 and xl, but all of your advice works just as well on me
'Legg's sheer elegance nude.'
Pantyhose is not just to cover up legs. It's to smooth things out, hide panty lines and helps shoes feel better. As an older woman I was taught that a lady is not properly dressed without them.
There are also sheer toe with single seam that can be worn under toes if you're wearing a nice sandal with heels for those who can't go without.
Listening to this while wearing my pink crocs lol.
Those are so cute and comfy looking!! :)
Crocs whit those pins on/in it?
I laughed. Love her videos, though. Savvy.
😆
I got some I work in the yard in. I won't them go. But I promise not to wear them out anymore.
I just put a pair of capri pants in the recycling bag this morning. Now I know why I hated them on me!
I’m so glad this was helpful! xo
No Nonsense Stockings
"Tan!" works for me!
Thank you Erin..your well explained videos and yes..no.
check off is something that really helped me ..it is so true

These are such great tips , I really need to look at how my clothes look, on me , not the hanger . I need so much help . I hope you do more of these .
You are so welcome! I'll definitely do more similar videos! xo
Wonderful tips. About pockets-I sew them shut on my jeans, especially front pockets. After sewing the front pocket shut, I cut off the inside of the pocket if its made so I can. It really slims the silhouette.
I often do the same thing! Makes a huge difference! xo
Smart.
That's ok...I love it, but we all like different things. The important takeaway is to find a top with a more modern open neckline. xo
Thanks so much, I’m just discovering your channel and it’s very helpful for my petite frame.
I love a cowl neck- but that top you showed was a perfect example of a style I used to wear years ago that did nothing for me!! But I thought it did. And the avoiding large prints- so helpful. When I see cute bold designs, I always think- 'wait, what would Erin say?'
You are SO sweet! Thank you! xo
Thoroughly agree with all of these Erin, thank you! I have no idea why clothing manufacturers put some of the most unflattering things on womens clothing. RUDE!!! lol
Some years the clothing styles aren't very flattering. It can take a long time to find the right top or pant, even shoe.
Because women buy them.
Erin, the blue is incredible on you!!! Just had to say that. :)
Nordstrom brand nude stockings (but sadly they are not opaque). Awesome glossy nude stockings. Not too glossy... Looks like awesome skin
I'm 5ft tall and I've put on extra weight lately and feeling frumpy...ugh. Not stressing though...summer is here! About to drop the weight, hydrate, and start strength training! Your channel makes me feel pumped! Lol...luv it!!!
You've got this, Marilyn! Wishing you the best! Thank you so much for watching. xo
Love your channel. Great pointers. I don't do white sneakers or trainers...but gray or colors are nice for me.
Ultimately you have to do what makes you the most comfortable. xo
I agree. I haven’t worn panty hose since the early 90s, but the DKNY nudes were the absolute best then.
hello do you remember the name/brand of the dress? the link is no longer loading, thanks:)
👏👏👏 living in Florida where it’s very warm most of the year, capris are a go to🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️BUT I have every intention of taking your advice to heart! Thank you! Seeing is believing!
Capris are fine, just be sure to pay attention to the hemlines. xo
I wonder if the advice for capri length is different if you have slim calves.
Oh my that gorgeous periwinkle shade is STUNNING with your coloring!
Thank you! xo
Great tips Erin, thank you! That color blue your wearing is beautiful!
Thank you SO much, Carol! xo
Part of my internal dialogue before I leave the house now is, "Am I going to frump town?" 🤣 Thanks for all the great tips Erin!
Love that, Donna! xo
😂😂😂
That made me laugh!
Hahaha... First time to watch this, think il be having the same question😁
I’d love to have that one shoulder sweater!
Loved your tips.My favorite all-time go to was A button up white cotton blouse with folded down collar and not cuffed but rolled sleeves. The bottom piece was a modestly form fitting pair of black leggings that grazed the ankle.A black pump and a tuxedo cut black velvet vest and I could go anywhere and feel comfortable.I wore that same outfit with multiple combinations of accessories and never failed to get a compliment.1 good go to outfit frees up so much time.☺️
You're exactly right...Wardrobe basics are SO important. Thanks for watching! xo
Interesting video. Your suggestions are very cultural. Some culture's fashion expect the bold and beautiful. I rock my large prints and get compliments alot. One has to know their body and be comfortable with their whole package. Looking my age is fine -- I don't want to look "younger". What's important is looking my best -- whatever that is 💕🌱
This was such a great video. Great ammunition because “I will not go gently into that good night.”
Me neither. I'll be 65 in two months. My cute fiancee is 30!
You're digging deep for Dylan Thomas; one of my favorites!!
Westmore Leg makeup has been a game changer for my over 60 legs. Even better than self tanner.. waterproof and lasts for days
Thanks SO much for sharing, Lynne! xo
Erin, Donna Karan nude pantyhose from Nordstrom! I so agree about the open/closed-toed shoe with them.
Just found you, so grateful. Getting fashion tips for a 40yr old that don’t come from a 23yr old, freaking priceless 😘
You are so sweet, Melyssa! Thank you and welcome! SO glad you are finding my content helpful! xo
All these styles are lovely, small size model, any curvy model styles and advice for UK size 16
Hi Lorraine! Here's a video I did with my friend, Anna, who has a curvy body type: ua-cam.com/video/EYKQZWuln4M/v-deo.html Hope you find this helpful! xo

Thank you sooo much, love your videos they are great 🤩
Regarding the pantyhose topic, I have fair skin, and I've found that colors like ivory or champagne look nude on me. The shade is so like my real skin tone that if I happen to get a run, it's not that noticeable even close up.
One way ticket out of frump town - love it lol 😊
Love the detail in this one - especially the first one detailing the length of the pants. I’m 5’2 and this is one I struggle with.
Thanks so much for another fun and super helpful video!

You're so welcome! I'm so glad this was helpful! xo
The Duchess of Cambridge can wear absolutely anything and look amazing.
I am guessing it is easier to look lovely when one has a personal assistant who styles clothes for you!
Indeed I love her style.
Some of it is nice but some is a bit too old for her. I do with that presenters wouldn't use her maiden name.
And has practically infinite resources in terms of access to fab clothes and ditto styling advice.
I only recently found your channel but have enjoyed it. I think this is my favorite video so far. The details are so important!
That sleeve length tip is so right!
You're so welcome! I'm so glad this was helpful! xo
Also, you don't need to scrub off your hose at the end of the day like you do with leg make up.
alida berman I agree with the warmth part, especially in winter.
alida berman if you insist on wearing nude stockings, please take her advice on not wearing open-toed shoes with them.
I think you should wear what you feel comfortable and confident wearing. If you found holy grail stockings that’s awesome!
Donna Karan used to make super sheer (and also easy to run because they were so delicate) pantyhose that just made your legs look better. I no longer need to wear stockings for work or warmth but these were great.
Still frumpy though
That's great! Thank you for sharing, Heather! I do that a lot with clothes! xo
Heather Valentine
And here I am looking for pockets that are functional. Because I loathe purses/handbags.
I think this is the first time I've ever seen anyone arguing against pockets.
I LOVE this kind of video. I benefit from every one. Thank you so much.
You're so welcome! I'm so glad this was helpful! xo
Hi Erin, would you try with capri pants to make the hem line even more up ? So it will be where the knee ends at smallest part. I think this can be great idea. Just a thought of mine.
I would not do that because it would visually cut me off making me look stumpy. The longer pant elongates the leg and is far more flattering. xo
I tried the Sally Hansen Airbrushed Legs leg makeup for the first time last NYE and it was amazing. It looked great, didn’t transfer and was fast! I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a natural leg color 😃
It's so good! Thank you for sharing! xo
I will look for this when I have to wear a more "dressed-up" look (which is rare these days- most of my dresses are casual summer styles. I'd rather wear a dress than shorts or pants in hot weather!)- I have always hated pantyhose, but sometimes that look is necessary.
Super attention to detail, Erin!
Could you look at doing a video on non invasive lifting devices or procedures please? Thank YOU!
Thank you! Great suggestion! xo
Busbee Style - Erin, thank you for taking the time to reply! 💕
The frumpy outfits are made worse with the wrong shoes. Yikes!
dsison18 some of us have no choice in the shoes we choose, for example if you have RA wearing a cool shoe is not happening,it has to be about comfort !!
Love your tips! I’d love to see your styles on an average sized 50+. You my dear, are blessed with the body of a 25yo!
Thank you! We are currently looking into ways that we can incorporate different body shapes and sizes on the channel. The logistics are a bit more complicated than most people realize. We have already started these changes on the website by hiring an amazing group of new writers who are all sharing their unique points of view! xo
Where have you been all my life:)
I’m 65 and just now getting your info. When I was a kid, I went to Catholic school, Health Asst school, worked at a restaurant, then a hospital. Always wore uniforms and just winged it with clothes:) I did ok, but I know I did a lot of NOs, lol. I enjoyed this video and will check out more. Thank you so much❤️
You're SO welcome, Mary! Glad you found this one helpful! xo
