I am new to the trade. My Uncle Gene Boyd gave me a hand made knife that he said he paid $300 for and as I looked it over I told him I could make a knife like that. So I did. It turned out ok for the first one. I have made 6 more and each time they get better and better. He was encouraging me to make them professionally but I wanted to keep it a hobby (for now). He passed away last month @ 73 years old, as a casualty from the incompetency of the covid brain dead medical field. He told me about your knives and how good your bowie knives are. They are beautiful! I am interested in learning a lot more from your videos and possibly some in person lessons to up my game.

It's awesome that you took your newfound interest and ran with it. As I think I said before, you were one if the peple that inspired me to take up knifemaking, so it was cool to hear your start up story. Keep up the awesome work Kyle! You still serve as an inspiration to many.
WOW, thanks Sam I can't tell you how motivating the encouragement is! I'm drawing up the inlay design on my dagger now and need a little inspiration myself.
It's really nice having this pop up in my suggested videos, hearing you say you'd like to teach, and then a year later seeing you just launch your masterclass videos. I'm super proud of you, man!
Watching you work has made me slow way down. I used to go way to fast, rushing through some steps, and then regretting mistakes. Now, I'm learning to chill and take my time. Definitely a hobbyist at this point, but wanting to be so much better.
What a great story! For me it will always be a hobby. A man has to do something fun. I’m sure it’s the same for women. My wife is also an artist and has to be coming up with something fun. Prost 🍻
This was an awesome video! I loved hearing your story. You've become one of my favorite knife-makers, both as an artist and as a person. The world needs more people like you, I'm curious if you ever thought about doing anything else. Like when you were a teenager, did you ever imagine you'd go to college, major in something, and get a job. If so, what was it? What do you think you'd be doing if you hadn't become a full time knife maker?
Loving this channel. I’m a beginner to this craft and absolutely love it. Thank you for your videos and what you have taught everyone through your videos.
That first customer who refused to pay the agreed on price, what a horrible person he is, something like that tells so much about a person. A lady at my job, a boss, heard that I had started making knives and asked me to make two for her to give as Christmas presents. I told her I had just started and didnt really know what I was doing and hadnt planned to sell but she insisted that whatever I made would be fine and she'd pay me well, so I went along, mainly just to be polite. I had minimal tools and knowledge but spent weeks forging her a dagger and Bowie, with MOP, turquoise, pewter, wood and antler handles, they were so cool. I made wooden sheaths too for each. I had MINIMAL tools, it was all SO HARD and all my own materials. I left them in her office for her to pick up, like we'd agreed. When I finally saw her at work, she told me how nice the knives were and again promised she'd pay me. Well...that was over two yrs ago and she still hasnt paid me! I dont dare bring it up for fear of being fired! The disgust I felt killed any chance of me ever trying to sell my knives; now I make them solely for my own enjoyment and when people ask me to sell them one, I say sorry, I make them only for myself.
Sorry to hear about that joe. Sounds similar to Kyle’s experience. Kyle decided to use that experience and that’s part of what got him where he is today. If you have nice things you make it wouldn’t be the end of the world if you shared them with others . Keep Forging On my friend Happy new year Dad
You need to make another knife that's very pretty. Something she feels she must have, when she sees it and tells you she must have it, tell her you will sell it to her and she can pay you for the two others as well. Don't be discouraged, stingy people are everywhere, you just need to learn how to manage them. ILL feelings only hurt you, get over it and get on to your creative knife creatine! Hope you have a good day!
KyleRoyerKnives only got one at this one, Scott McGhee. Definitely enjoyed my time up north we even got some snow which is certainly a rarity for someone from east Texas. Definitely gonna try and push myself on quality even more so I can get those two sets of two letters even sooner
That sounds just about like me I mean it's one thing to heat up metal and bashing it into submission but another thing to make a precision thoughtful peace that's where the money's at.
Would you rather make a knife knowing it’ll be kept in a safe only to be taken out and looked at once in a while or make a knife knowing that while it’s beauty is appreciated that it’ll be used as designed?
WOW, it's great to know I have guys out there that have been watching all these years. I really wish we would've kept it going, I think we were some of the first knife makers to post on UA-cam.
Awesome Miller Work into it slowly with diligence and passion. Ask lots of questions. Make lots of mistakes but don’t let any out of the shop. Find a local knife community , make sure you share your knowledge and passion with others. It’s more fun when we bring people along with us on our journey … Sounds like you are in a good place. Keep Forging On my friend Dad
@@KyleRoyerKnives i like that you say, “make lot’s of mistakes, but don’t let them out of the shop” i love that.! As for taking people along for the journey, I’ve started a UA-cam channel, show far its only knife sharpening videos,, but i will incorporate knife making also

I feel like maybe someone will get something from it. Thanks for sharing your video and if you get a chance subscribe to my channel. Id love to have you there with me for the trip.

Do you have a beginner shop and equipment list or video? What are the must have tools supplies when you FIRST begin
Really enjoying the video, as a hobbyist Blacksmith/Bladesmith it give something to strive for
Thanks Josh! Bladesmithing has been real good to me, not without daily challenges but I'm so glad I went down that road.
Love the story!

What was you most expensive knife please?

Would you care what happens to it?? As I would just be glad it sold most of Kyle's knives I cant see people using
Still remeber your journey to master series.

The thought of some guy trying to bully a little boy into making them a custom high tier knife on the cheap is so crazy. What a butthead dude. Rofl
