    So what I'm getting from this is gaskets first before you ever light a fire. Glad I watched this before I go pick mine up this weekend

    I have a Weber Smokey Mountain on order. Should get here in a few days. I've seen A LOT of comments where people have leak issues so I also ordered insulation stripping. I'll put the insulation on before I even use it so I don't have to clean it to the same extent as a used one. This was a great and useful video. Thanks for making it. It looks like this insulation helps a lot to keep smoke in.

      Go to the Cajon Bandit website and see all kinds of goodies for the WSM.

    Good video. I found it much easier to just use a razor blade to scrape the places for the gasket and then use a little acetone. Worked like a charm. Also if you use the gasket on the WSM instead of the door you can go all the way across the top and it will not interfere with the latch.

      Thanks for you input. I have a brand new WSM 22" so I am starting out with a perfectly clean unit. Thanks for the door tip, to not apply to the door.

    along with a gasket put on a new door, Cajon Bandit makes an excellent aftermarket door which is much more heavy duty than the original

    So 3 years later... how has this held up?

  • @davethestalker

    The crucial problem area is where the center section goes into the bottom. If air creeps into an out of round WSM, temps will be hard to control.

    I justrvapplied a gasket 2 days ago and I'm certain that the smoke you thought was coming from the lid is actually the smoke from the handle sliding over that way I'd look at which way that smoke from the handle is going because I thought the same thing until I realized it wasn't coming from my lid...but it was coming from the handle and sliding around the side past the lid. It's very deceptive. Let me know if I'm correct. Nice video.

      It was leaking everywhere, at the door and at the lid. After a few months, it leaks again at the lid but far less than before and the door is not leaking at all

    Suggestion; easier to get new OE door instead of cleaning the old one. That door may have benefited from some minor flex bending.

    • @frogsbbq5630
      @frogsbbq5630  3 роки тому +1

      I have bended the door a bit and it doesn't leak to much. I think a new door could also add more isolation.
      So much modification you could do on this smokers... if only Weber would ship them with what we need!

      @@frogsbbq5630 Yes, Weber could do better. I have no gaskets on my 18 WSM and get very little leaking of smoke out or extra air in. I wondered why. Maybe it is because my habit is to use the same "inexing" of the lid upon the barrel and the barrel upon the base section. I always put those pieces together in same "clocking" and the build-up of burning tends to "heal" the openings -- maybe. My theory anyway. Stay well.

    I have a WSM ordered. Do all doors fit this poorly?🤨 If so it looks like a manufacturing problem that Weber should want to correct in order to keep their reputation for quality.

    Have a doubt, if i want to take the temp up to 325 or even 400 f, could the gasket interfere with it? Because most of the time i cook at 225 but i still want to cook some things at 325 or higher. I use 22.5 wsm

    • @frogsbbq5630
      @frogsbbq5630  2 роки тому +1

      The gasket will not help getting to these temperatures. I found that 325 is hard get, 400 near impossible
