I love to follow all the prize lists. It's just plain fun! I fantasize about reading them all, but it's too much for me. It would be fun to read the Women's Prize short list with a group some day

Great idea for reading the previews. I just bought and read The Maiden by Kate Foster while traveling in Scotland. Anxious to read your blog about it. I just love this idea. I read for the BT prize every year just because each year it makes me read books I have no interest in and end up loving. I read much more of the Non-fiction list this year than the fiction. I love this prize in general and follow it more than any other. I was in London for the (too many times to remember) and was there for the reveal of the shortlist. What fun. Hope to talk more about it on the salon this weekend.

Good video - thank you. I just ordered Filthy Rich Vampires - my expand my reading topics book for May. I'm excited for the Women's Non-fiction prize - I've read all but one. I also follow the Wainwright Prize - I like non-fiction, especially, nature or food related books. I

I didn't know you both played cello! It's like your friendship was fated :) Enjoyed meeting Caroline Leavitt at Booktopia - Days of Wonder sounds great. Like you, Chris, I'm always intrigued by the prize lists ... though I never have time to follow through! Reading previews was a great idea. Nice to see you two - we missed you at Booktopia!

I follow a few awards--the Women's Prize, the Carol Shields Prize, and the National Book Awards are the big ones, but I have yet to be able to read a whole shortlist, much less long list. I do think that I might be able to do a short list in the future, but a whole longlist might be too much!

I like following prizes. I have a list of several that I look at for new authors/books. This year I hit circuitry overload tho. I tried to get many of the Women’s Prize nonfiction and fiction LL books in hand. And then the Carol Shields Prize. And the International Booker prize. I went from an adrenaline rush to burn out! Mostly because many of the books were meh to me. For some reason this year’s prize lists feel more than ever like a few mismatched people in a room deciding rather than representative of actually choosing high quality literature. I completed and like d several books, but they are only a small percentage. I’ll continue to look at prize lists for new authors, but I’m definitely never going to try to read a whole long list for any prize ever again in my life.

I love following prize lists. They have been a great way to find books that are not on my radar and some of my favorite books of the year have come from long and short lists. The Women's s Prize, the Carol Shields and the Booker have been my go to lists for the past couple of years.

The Carol Shields list is new to me. (This is Chris.) Their 2024 long list looks great!

@@BookCougars I think it is only the second year for it. I usually find two or three books per longlist that fits me. The discovery of new books, there's nothing like it!

My thoughts about prizes have evolved in a similar trajectory as yours. I follow the Tournament of Books and usually manage to find at least a couple of books that make my yearly top ten list from it. I’ve never read the entire short list for the Woman’s Prize (as I have for ToB), partly because the Woman’s Prize follows close on the heels of ToB and I have a bit of burnout by then. However, I love all the social media engagement that the Woman’s Prize engenders, so I’m always a little sad that I don’t have my own prediction list. (Chris, I’m headed to your blog after this. I love the way you made your predictions based on the previews.) In general, of the major awards, I’ve had the most successful reads from the Pulitzer list. Thanks for another fun video! I woke my husband up with my cackling. P.S. Did you know that when Bailey’s sponsored the Women’s Prize, they had a giant chocolate-filled party to celebrate? I’m so annoyed that the U.S. does not have similar literature events to create a festive bookish culture (although I think things like the upcoming Independent Bookstore Day is a step in the right direction). P.S.S. The Woman’s Prize should definitely call you.
