Cuphead is a classic run 'n' gun set in the style of a one-on-one fighting game universe. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930's, the visuals and audio were painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional cel animation (hand drawn & hand inked!), watercolor backgrounds, and live jazz recordings. - Ігри
Glad they didn't release it back in 2014, and actually took the time to improve the game.

The look of this game is absolutely great. However, I think the scanline effect makes it look more modern than it should.
It's O.K. because we are adding a toggle in the options, because some of our fans want the option :)

Oh man. How long of a process does it take to hand draw and ink the characters, environments, and. Enemies? I gotta give guys a lot of respect for staying true to the era.
It's a very labor-intese process! But, we keep pushing forward to make huge progress.
The basic summary is that the characters need: concept > final design > rough animation > clean up animation > ink > scan > colored in Photoshop (quicker than painting cels AND gives the same result). Then we add all sort of maniacal details: subtle cel drop shadows, miscolored frames, missing color, etc. Then it has to be setup and timed properly in the game engine.
Backgrounds are concepted in rough form with pencil > then a final medium sized drawing is made to ensure the background works with the boss fight > next, the final, larger under-drawing is made and painting can begin. The backgrounds are painted in watercolor with many layers until it looks closer to that of an oil painting (like old masters of storybook style art). Foreground and background elements are painted separately and then isolated in Photoshop so we can have parallax. Then, any animated background elements are drawn/animated/tested until it looks right.
On top of that, the music is going to be recorded with a full big band and all the sound effects are foley - i.e. created with real physical items/mouth sounds like they did in the 1930s.
That sums the process up nicely :)

I think old cartoons had static backgrounds so it may be a deliberate choice.
Backgrounds are indeed static, but a lot more moved at once on the screen, causing a certain crowded look which I'm still kind of missing in this. Then again, having too much animating too wildly might distract from gameplay... Decisions, decisions.

Wow the way Cuphead has evolved is INSANE! I wish I couldve tried out the betas, mainly the 2014 beta :( . I hope yall could make them public again one day!

At least they took time to improve the game, it was actually worth it.

imagine trying to explain to these people that their game got made into a netflix show as well, and a dlc was made.
Love the effects you guys used for the color focus and scan lines (reminds me of watching classic cartoons on VHS). Icing on the cake for the amazing animation.
A ton of time and research was put into the effects, so this is exactly what we want to hear!

I can’t help but watch this trailer over and over again. It’s so different from the final game and I love it. The “Run n Gun Fighting Game Hybrid” thing, The early World Map, The early weapons, The early music, The fact you would fight two Goopy The Greats, the watercolor backgrounds, The early tutorial room, the early hud, Cuphead’s slightly faster animations, and let’s not forget the 2014 release date. It’s so fascinating to see everything that changed from this trailer to the final game. Studio MDHR, you guys did a phenomenal job with this game.
It's hard to believe that such a simple project has been able to create a fantastic game full of challenges. Simply cuphead has been the biggest project of the MDHR studio :]

Its insane seeing them go from a 2013 simple trailer all the way to having a netflix series and even a dlc for the game. Super proud of studio MDHR and can't wait to see what future releases they have

Man, I can't imagine how magical it would've been to have been a spectator following this game from the release of this teaser all the way to now. I discovered this game around the middle of 2018, and have been hooked on it ever since.

Very interesting how the old trailer music has king dice and one hell of a time tunes in there… it feels like one hell of a time has that melody of the original trailer for like fans there since the start haha

It looks cool, and I mean it LOOKS cool. Very nice style and everything, however that description turns me off a bit. Looking at a screenshot I was hoping for a 2D adventure plat-former... That description tells me small environments where you jump around shooting a boss/enemy.
It looks good and the animations are nice. However I'm going to wait and see what this turns out to be.

It’s kinda insane that these cuphead. sprites are 10 years old and literally the same as we have now in the final game. Just shows how long the animation takes and how well it holds up.
Timeless artstyle, proven by the fact that it looks the same as it did during 2013 alone! I love the story behind the studio, how the game got made and damn did it pay off!
Well, I sure hope we don´t have to wait until 2022 for the DLC to come!

Well, for me this game is the best of the E3 of this year, and I think would be amazing that more people enjoy it, and again, a Vita versión of CupHead would be awesome.
