    I served in the British infantry and never has the cap retainer broken nor have I ever noticed the 'plastic' taste which might make me suspect that this one could be a replica/fake. Good video btw and the real kit was pretty good.

      Ray Lawrence I own a few of these some fakes and some real and they all have done that, when new every plastic canteen I’ve owned except one has had that taste at first. But after a little use and baking soda this canteen has become a staple and one of my most used

    I have the f&g made in 1971 and cup in 72 just shy of 50 years old and still does the job 👍

    Hi Devin,
    I have just put on my anorak! ;-)
    Technically, it's probably called the Pattern 1962 W/B (waterbottle), *FOR* the Pattern 1958 web set - but everyone in the British military knows it as the '58 W/B. (When the '58 kit was first produced, it had no W/B, Mug or W/B Pouch.)
    I've never heard of it being called a "Mk4" waterbottle, I don't know where that comes from. What were the Mk1 to Mk3 like? Probably nomenclature from another country that adopted it.
    They're often called "Osprey" waterbottles because Osprey have been the main manufacturer since 1970. There was another manufacturer (manufacturer initialled "PP" within a sun logo) for a short time (late 70s). Anything else dated 1970 onward is NOT genuine issue as a standalone item (though some BCB ones could appear in military aircraft BCB survival packs).
    Designed and first produced in 1962 by a company called "Cascelloid", production certainly by 1965 up to 1969 was by a company called "F&G". W/Bs up to around 1967 were green.
    The earlier W/Bs were of a slightly softer plastic. I remember the mugs were MUCH softer and the plastic "rivets" were prone to breaking. I obtained from stores a 1965 dated green W/B in 1989 and I still use it at least three times a week. The storeman swapped the cap in 1990 because we were issued new respirators. Still going strong, no plastic taste, no leakage.
    The retainers, too, were prone to breaking. In the 1970s, they made them from a different plastic - and that modification has endured. I have a 1973 '58 W/B in it's original form and it's still going strong.
    The retainers are very thin but they ARE very strong. The thinness enables ONE soldier to take the W/Bs of his section (10 men pre-SA80 adoption, 8 men after), carry them all in one hand (other hand holding his weapon) and fill them.
    There are two optional caps which are typically issued with the respirator. The first is the S10 NBC cap, the second the CBRN "GSR" cap.
    Btw, I use the Pattern 1995 Mug (BCB Crusader Mug) with it's cooker, a REALLY good system. Keep that mug on the fire, use the '58 Mug for eating out of. All fits into a PLCE W/B or Utility Pouch.

    i used one for many years when in british army nev er once saw a broken one and have no recollection of any plastic taste i still use crusader cook set when fishing and hunting no complaints

    The cup is plastic so that you do not burn your lips if the contents are hot, you are meant to boil your water in your mess tin. That's why we have two mess tins, we're British and we drink Tea that's why we have a separate cup.

    Note, black attracts heat when it is in the open, under the sun. The canteen is not kept in the open but in a canvas pouch. In the shade, black is excellent at keeping things cool - see desert nomads (Tuaregs, etc). Also, as stated below, it helps prevent algal growth.

    I tend to just give my US plastic canteens the vinegar treatment (just fill it with water and half vinegar and let it sit overnight) tends to get rid of the plastic taste for at least 2 months

  • @jelkel25
    @jelkel25 6 років тому +1

    If you soak the whole canteen in water with soda Chrystals at least overnight if not longer and do this regularly, it "freshens" plastic canteen's and takes away some if not all the plastic taste in the water from a P58, it disinfects while not leaving that great smell and aftertaste you get with bleach. I've had P58s for over ,30 years and the cap retainer has never broken, the rubber washer in the lid or cap lid wears out and starts leaking after 15 years or so but you can buy new replacements easily.

    you can snap the two handles together and they sit together quite comfortably. Thats why the handles are a bit rattly, as they have enough material to sit one above the other when brought together

    I came across these in the late 1990s. Standard issue in uk forces at the time. Being RN we never got cook set but the flat stove we got.
    If its new try cleaning out the bottle, it shold not taste. Probably manufacturing process still in container.
    I much prefer your us canteens, the stainless steel type not plastic.

    I like these better than the U.S. ones for this reason but I went to titanium instead for longer durability and to boil.

    But the mug would work well for coffee,.

    The canteen is also black for another reason..... it blocks light getting through which helps the water inside stay fresh longer without growth of germs etc...

      John Gayley but the the usgi canteen does the same thing ... and it’s green so it’s doesn’t get as hot

    • @andrewjohnston4127

      The very first ones were made in green then changed to black.they still surface now and again. The bottle is always kept in the pouch so it being black makes no difference, it's not in direct sunlight. The caps were swapped with the nbc lids usually but in 28 years of using one I've yet to hear of anyone breaking the lid

    I got a general canteen question, I was wondering if you did anything to get rid of the dents in aluminum/stainless steel canteens. I got a U.S. 1 qt from 1945 I want to restore to useable condition because I have one for Vietnam. Actually got a great deal on it. $12 for the Canteen, T-Handle cup, and Wire Hook cover I believe is from 42 Khaki colored. There's no proper videos on how to do it and I don't know if it would destroy the welds, even though it's still a very solid canteen not a thin cheap one like my repro.

    • @DevinK
      @DevinK  6 років тому +1

      Edwin it’s pretty hard to do because you can’t really fit anything inside the canteen to pound the dents out the only way to really do effective would be to split it along the weld and shape it and then re-weld it but that’s really more work then it’s worth

    • @FloppaAppreciator
      @FloppaAppreciator 6 років тому +1

      Heard you could freeze water and the way it would expand would push them out but that would bust the welds in my opinion if you did it the wrong way.

    • @DevinK
      @DevinK  6 років тому

      Edwin more then likely it would bust the canteen

    Hello, I have a bottle of osprey 2022 and a mug of 2020, tell me they changed the thickness of the plastic, mine weighs 134 grams without a lid and 164 grams with a lid and the mug does not fit tightly, there is a gap on top, they probably upgraded the bottle itself a little, how much is your bottle by weight.

    The combined cadet forces in the U.K use 58 pattern replicas

  • @Matt77125
    @Matt77125 3 роки тому

    I believe this is a replica. At 4:45 you show the underside of the cap, the original has a little detachable nozzle so the bottle can be attached to a drinking system. That could explain the plastic taste as well.

    • @DevinK
      @DevinK  3 роки тому

      I had it checked it is authentic and apparently the new canteens just taste like plastic for a little while just like the American, Canadian, French, Belgian, dutch, Russian, German, Swiss, Italian, Greek, and Turkish ones.

      @@DevinK Thanks! What is the point of the plastic cup anyway? I can see the metal cooking cup that locks underneath the canteen being useful, but why both?

    • @DevinK
      @DevinK  4 роки тому

      atoddtoa the plastic cup would be used for hygiene purposes like bathing and brushing your teeth and the metal cup is for cooking and disinfecting water. It’s just got to keep them separate
