Many many thanks. I am starting a home studio on a budget. I will be doing narrations for children's books. I have a Dell Optiplex Windows 10, Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz, 8GB, 1TB, with Dual 19" LCD Monitors (Certified Refurbished)and this video gave me confidence that its fine to start out with. Peace!

Great video. Looking forward to more. Recently I had to upgrade from 2012 Mac mini and decided to go for PC this time. I never looked back. I love Macs but quality/money ratio is the most important to me.

Same here, I do love Mac, especially because of the OS. But yeah, the value for money (performance wise) is extremely low, when compared to a Windows PC.

That was a cool video! I have an iMac i5 that’s good enough for me. Not dedicated to music. The video reminds me of people buying and upgrading older guitars for a great customized instrument which is as good as, if not better, than a new and more expensive option.

I recently bought the Dell OptiPlex 7020 SFF from eBay for approximately $200. It runs on an Intel Core i7-4790 quad-core processor at 3.60 GHz. It initially came with 8GB DDR3-1600 RAM and a 500GB 7200 RPM hard drive, but then I spent some extra cash and upgraded the RAM to 16GB, and from a 500GB hard drive to a 1TB solid state drive. I also installed a ZOTAC GeForce GT 730 Zone Edition low-profile graphics card with 4GB DDR3 VRAM. With the upgrades in place, my OptiPlex works quite well when performing general tasks, such as browsing the Web, watching videos, and listening to music; as well as resource-intensive tasks, such as video and photo editing, drawing digital cartoons, and animation. As for gaming, I'm more likely to play some older '90s PC games via DOSBox and/or ScummVM.

I have the DT version of the Optiplex 7010. It has been upgraded to an i7 cpu and 32gb of ram. I would recommend either the DT or MT variants over the SFF as they will have better airflow. It’s really cramped in the SFF version.
I have turned it into a hackintosh as I use Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X. It runs fine.

Haha I just got one, well it's basically the same PC but the tower version. It came with 16GB RAM, i7 3770, 240GB SSD and a 2TB HDD. It was £280 on Amazon, an office refurb.. I had one that looked like the one in the video but it was an i5 version. I had it for five years without any problems but I just wanted an i7 as I have started using Roland Cloud. It works well! Less hiccups than the i5 and I am surprised by how quiet it is. The only thing is, it has a few marks on the case but I keep my tower hidden away anyhow.

Got an i7 e5450 latitude laptop. Same gen. £50 including postage.
It's a fixer upper - no screen, keyboard, battery or ram.
However, when you can take time to research prices for parts, or are okay with them taking time to get to you... It's going to save a fair bit of cash.
If you can - aim for the i5 4690k, firstly it's an younger CPU that the i7 (by a few months or so). Plus as with all the k series - it can be over clocked.
There's been videos and talk or folks getting 4.5 GHz out of it.
Although, personally - I'd aim for the more sedate 4.3 - 4.4 mark.
    Glad your bargain worked out
It's an easy way to get more for your money.

Hi thank you very much for this very valuable video and advice. I have a question but out of topic. I have dell optiplex 780 to which i have just replace the HD with a SSD ... still with win 7 OS. Listening with a decent headphone through the front HP out i have been quite surprised by the quality of the sound. I guess this depends on the high quality of the on board audio chip and interface ? The manual mentions a Audio Intel High Definition. Can you confirm this ? have you tested the headphone out ? It is so good to me that i am thinking to adopt it for my stereo system. Maybe changing the cabinet with a fancy one ... for looks.
    thanks a lot, gino

Going to throw this out here. Someone should do a price comparison between using a Windows/Apple OS compared to an open source OS. The obvious gotcha with an open source OS is getting the drivers written to do what you need... This would be the contrast to what you would pay for subscription to simply use chosen software you want, on a yearly basis.
The coding would be (most likely) a one off deal. However it would most likely be more than an annual subscription.
    Would be an interesting comparison

You are right in almost everything you say. But emphasizing the i7 over an i5 is wrong. The truth is that there is very little difference between these two generations.
I have Dell Optiplex SFF in both variants and notice no difference at all.
The graphics card is the bottleneck for the SFF models as they only have two slots.
But this is no problem in this case. Only two SATA ports is also a limitation, so I have chosen to throw out the DVDs and rather used the access to SSDs.

I probably won't be gaming on it as I only play 2D Retro games and I've already got a hacked Nintendo Wii with all the 2D games I could ever want to play.... I'd be using the Optiplex for Music only. Hi Thomas! I have checked a post from your website, about using a digital piano as midi controller. I couldn't send you a mail so I will ask you the question here if you don't mind.
I read you use the Yamaha p45, I like that model but I am also interested in the Korg b2. Have you tried it? Thank you and take care :))

Hi Lalairu! Thanks for checking out my website! I can highly recommend the Yamaha - I have had it for around 2 years now, and I am still overjoyed with it! I'm afraid I have no experience with the Korg, but Korg rarely dissapoints, so I am sure it would be a good one too;)

I'm using a fairly old computer with windows 8 and I'm also using an M-audio Fastrack ultra. The problem is that I fucking hate windows 8 and the drivers to the Fastrack doesn't work beyond windows 8. I guess I just have to live with Windows 8 or buy a new soundcard.

Or - you could look for a good second hand PC! ;) Might save you a lot of frustration!

You talk about Dell Optiplex for sound production and make no mention of how it actually sounds or what sound card/chip exactly is in there??

Nostalgi? Hahaha. Minimalisme for the world! :)

Why did you buy a Bluetooth Adapter?

    • @ThomasLeypoldt
      @ThomasLeypoldt  2 роки тому +1

Because it did not have an integrated bluetooth-functionality. Needed an external bluetooth that connected into one of the USB ports in order to have the possiblity to connect devices via Bluetooth.
