I don’t fit on sportsbikes any more, with arthritic shoulders and prolapsed discs in my neck, I’d be in traction after half an hour. Nice to look at though.

Beautiful bike, particularly in that livery. They sound fantastic on track. The older I get, it seems, the more I love my sport bikes. I have other types as well, but nothing creates the same emotional and physical thrill, especially in track sessions. Yes, I hurt and creak, especially in the mornings after long track days, but that way I know I’m still kicking. This video reminds me of your long on-bike video of the S1000RR a few days ago. Great fun!

Great real-world review Kate gorgeous looking bike and that cross-plane engine sounds utter filth. I’ve had my R1 for almost 18yrs, you know the vintage where rear wheel traction is controlled between your ears closely coupled to the cheeks of your arse, and the suite of electronic rider aids consist of lights and a horn, and I still have to paddle it on tippy toes and I’m 5 10. Lecky techy aside it shares the same basic DNA of being crazy fast, agile, intoxicating and a nightmare to ride any length of time in traffic wrists, neck, shoulders all ache and the engine gets bloody hot too. Probably not the best choice for commuting or touring but could tackle both at a pinch, however where they really score (and sports bikes generally) is inducing the biggest stupid grin factor when carving up the twisties on a quiet Sunday morning. Keep up the good work and all the best from sunny Camborne.

Hi Kate, enjoyed your review of the R1. Sports bikes in general I can appreciate as a design art form, but with my ancient creaky frame I can no longer consider one myself, and then you also have to consider with our gnarly pothole strewn roads if they are suitable. They are no doubt an absolute blast on a racetrack, but maybe that is where they belong. Still a stunning bike though. Thank you.

I just got one of these, my forth superbike. I find it very smooth and easy to ride, rather quiet exhaust. Brakes are similar to the GSXR1000 which feel sortof weak compared to S1000RR and Panigale (may need new pads) they need more pressure to do the same stop. Electronic package is excellent. Dash is rather small. Suspension feels on the soft side and works well, with fast and slow bump adjustments at the rear.
Quality and finish is excellent except for the clutch cable routing around the triple clamp, where it almost covers the dash.
Brake and clutch levers cant be adjusted very far but can, only just, attain comfortable angles (straight wrists when operating them).
Comfort is not bad because it has well placed panels to grip with legs. Heat is also not bad with only a little hot air around the feet.
About sport bikes in general, I only ride sport bikes now - love them, I also ride full time (sold my car) and i suppose core muscles adapt to it after a while which makes it much better.

Ruby says: “Do vrooooom!” Having the tank support the belly helps to unload the wrists. I actually consciously designed this feature into my Pteranodon special. It does however help if one has an extra big portion of “belly pecs”. At least one advantage of my natural build.

I had a carburettor R1 for 6 years and loved it, however, it was not quite as grunty as its predecessor the Thunderace, which I also had for 6 years. You will very rapidly get used to the speed and develop tunnel vision down the motorway on a quiet Sunday morning. After 160 it all goes quiet as the nose cone punches the air so hard, it flies over the top of your helmet, allegedly. Still miss an R1. currently riding a KTM 1290 sdr with the intention of buying a Triumph Rocket 3 R next year all being well. wanna buy a black edition sdr with full akro and all modes? 2 careful owners c/w pair of KTM paddock stands

Love the Yam R1s myself, they are quick, sound great and go superb, but now Ive gone the Italian route Aprilia with a 2017 RSV4RF and 2014 RSV4 Factory, does everything better than a Yamaha R1 and with the best Ohlins all round. With 20mph roads everywhere and speed cams all over the place, seems pointless owning big litre superbikes for road only as you never get out of first gear around town and even with big open roads you will never tap into the big horses

I owned a 2008 model R1 for 2 years which cost me £9000 new followed by a 2011blade new for £11000 both were amazing machines and stupidly fast on the road back then 1000cc sports bikes are now all knocking on £20000 and seem to be much more uncomfortable now. Pointless on the road if you ask me. Great as track machines if you can afford them though. I now ride a Ninja 1000sx which is plenty fast enough on the road and comfortable too.

Its a shame so many manufacturers make bikes like these with a tall seat height. At 5ft 7" and 29" inside leg there's no way I could ride an R1. I tried an R6 many years ago and had a similar problem. I did have a Ducati Supersport S 2 years ago and that suited me much better and was sporty & fast enough too.

Weird I rode an r1 lately and it wasn’t hard to get into it (onto it). The m1000rr with that rear shock primed so high to push you forward for track riding was some haul to get my shoe over the cowl. I was well aware as all the salesmen in the dealership where watching me. It wasn’t a demo either !! I was standing on tip toes and I’m 6ft !

I bet your fingers and stomach was tingling for hours after you rode it. Such a lovely bike and so nice even over it's faster rivals. We all know its a track focused bike, but not having a fuel gauge will affect sales...sack the dev team

I can't believe yamaha had not 1 but 2 anniversary bikes (maybe more?) As demo bikes? I'm just hear to see how her neck does with this riding position.

@@UsernameKate i bet I remember when you rode the speed RR and it was killing you and the RR isn't anywhere as bad a the R1. Good review cheers.

They increased the seat height and overall height of the bike so much.
I think it is ugly, especially compared to the stunning beauty of an early R1.
What a shame to make a bike that good in specs but make it that fugly... 🤔😐

I own a 60th, and a Z-H2 and I’ve also ridden a tuned H2, the R1 is still a savage bike even in comparison to the other two. 😁

This sort of bike as a llimited market, why because the people who can enjoy them can’t afford them and the people who can buy them have back ache. sad but true plus the roads are shit so no point having a track focused bike on our lovely roads .

But like you say, they are naughty, and have no business being on the road, they're either fast or faster, and you forget how to stop.
