@Matthew Ackerman I have no doubt it's the v4cc1ne. There's been too many "sudden deaths" in recent times to ignore. Bob Saget, the media says, died from head injuries after a fall. But what caused the fall?
One of many fond memories: Bryan came to me at work one day and asked if I could add some rivets to one of his cymbals for a "sizzle" experiment. I was not aware that this was even a "thing" ...but after he explained what he wanted to achieve I wasn't about to say no (I was a huge fan and HUM was about to go on TV). We were both pretty nervous about me potentially "trashing" the cymbal ...but after successfully drilling out some clean and evenly spaced holes we were able to relax. I came up with my own stylish technique of securing the rivets and Bryan was stoked! It was a high-five moment. Love you man!
Yes, I'd say so (and it was awesome!) We spent plenty of time at work together and never had a problem with the other. Bryan was by far the coolest and most "chill" guy I have ever worked with and equally a smart/clever and quick learner. I went to a number of his shows before and after getting big. After a great show (HUM at Mabel's in our home town) he came directly off stage and met my latest girlfriend (Cathy had very long hair btw :) All three of us were grinning from ear to ear ...for multiple reasons. Bryan of course was covered in sweat which made his taped-up but still bleeding hands that much messier looking ...still smiling he said something like like: "Eh, comes with the job!". @@robotdudeguy
True story: I almost broke both of Bryan's legs at work in 1995 when the brakes went out on a customer's car. I threw the car into park when the brake pedal went to the floor and Bryan jumped onto the hood. The front bumper was only inches from the wall where he was hanging up keys for one of his car audio installs. Whew!
I've been playing music for just over 20 years, when I talk with non musicians and try to explain feeling the music, this is one of the top 3 songs I refer back to
It's so impressive that amidst all the noisy guitar tone you can pick out the beautiful lush notes of their intricate chords. That might be my favorite thing about Hum. I was a freshman in high school when this dropped, it was... SO welcomed and definitely changed the way I thought about music. Still sounds amazing all these years later.
That left foot on the hihat pedal is so effective and subtle but important in almost all of his beats. He’s hard to copy always being in his own perfect pocket. God he’s so amazing.
And they ripped off the I'd prefer an astronaut album cover. Some moron deaftones fans got pissy at me for saying so, but anyone with two brain cells and two eyes can see it.
late to this comment, but I agree 100%. theres something about his seemingly random hi hat hits he does mid fills, while keeping his playing so tight. cheers
this song just hurts me so much i used to smoke drugs with my ex-wife when she was my girlfriend, listen to this album and cuddle on her big-butt we were together for 18 years i did a bunch of acid a couple months ago and listened to this album, torturing myself into a weeping, screaming pile of bullshit goddamn what a ride
I've been known to take care of my possessions, whenever possible ;)Happy to know you liked the sound & vision captured on the tape, and for posting a note here.
i love this song SO MUCH so heavy and then the middle part sounds so thoughtful and pretty such an amazing riff its just so good i love the middle part the quiet stuff like insanely
Much thanks to OP, really appreciate you posting this. There was a really muddied-up version of this performance posted years ago in which to audio seemed to be off quite a bit- glad you have posted this version, which is waaaay better. But what I wouldn't give for a cleaned up, board mix of this song that I could blare and repeat endlessly and keep my neighbors awake with for hours on end late at night. Thanks again- great song, heavy, heavy rocking band, then and now. Love these guys.
My pleasure! Glad you found the clip, and took the time to write a note of appreciation. One of the best surprises to come along, back when 120 Minutes used to air these unique live clips, for me. Practically jumps out of the computer when listening on good 'phones ;) Thanks again for the nod of appreciation!
Thank you for posting this!!! This is my favorite track from Hum! It used to bum me out that the only version of this on UA-cam was a warped VHS copy of it. I'm very happy that you uploaded this!!!
Kick buttocks. Like iZombieDC said this is a much better version of the same appearance posted elsewhere on YT. I actually like this song better than Stars but do you have that clip too? They also played it on this episode of 120 Minutes.
whatthehellbrosef Somewhere in the collection the performance of "Stars" is waiting to be transferred from videotape..... It will take some time for me to get to it [think: 6 months, or so]. Meanwhile, there is a clip of them on my channel performing it, on another late-night USTV program....
Nvrmind Tims prodigy is a Frankenstein... Has a LP bridge installed (personally hate the fender traditional bridge too outside of the American tele style) also some pick up work apparently they were too hot. Wanted one because of this performance. Still plays it to this day (looks like it's in much better shape no surprise) but yeah probably just go Jackson Esp if I have the money lol saw a few prodigy 1 demo vids and meh it's a strat.. If I'm buying a fender it'd be 3rd or 4th in my collection and probably a jazzmaster.
As far as I know, there were only 2 songs from this taping ever broadcast [I didn't catch the other one, "Stars"]. If you mean the entire 120 Minutes from this taping, you can search for it in practically any 'search engine' and find one or two sites that have nearly complete episodes, or at least clips from them..... Should you mean the entire taping of Hum's set - let me know if you ever track it down, as I'd like to see/hear the whole session, as well :)
Hum Forever. Protect this footage at all costs.
they got this completely flawless , this was literally note by note right .
Dude is going totally nuts on the drums, Hum are so damn heavy.
Putting on a fucking clinic.
He’s so fucking underrated.
RIP to a true legend
Not many swing harder in 3/4 time
They sure played the fuck out of those instruments
If there's a Nobel Prize for drumming, give it to Bryan St. Pere for the last 60 seconds of this song.
Bryan beat those skins like they owed him money. Fucking great drummer in a great band. We are diminished with his passing. RIP.
Whoever did the sound for this nailed it. Hum is one of the heaviest live bands and this absolutely captures their sound 💚
Cant believe Bryan passed away. He was one of my biggest inspirations growing up.
Love it when nerds can rock out
RIP Bryan St Pere 😢 One of the best drummers of his generation
RIP one of the best for sure
a goat!
No cap

thats a pretty popular technique in jazz (check out ahmad jamal's trio recordings from the 50s) so its cool to see it done in a rock context
@@lxxwj Thanks, I'm checking them out 😎
were you and bryan good friends? that sounds awesome.

i wish there were more live videos of hum from the 90s like this one. they had such a good sound
Tim Lash's riffs are otherworldy!

That fking break into the 4/4 at 1:43 blows my ears off how fucking good it is!!! Such raw energy in that section!!!

Bryan St. Pere is probably my favorite drummer. He's so fucking good!
+Liam Fernandez He is a fucking beast, the drumming in You'd prefer an astronaut is fantastic.
I saw HUM back in September and I caught his drumstick :)
Absolute fucking animal. Love this guy more than my own family

Adam Grimm hahahahaha best reply ever
So powerful and loud yet precise and smooth. Hum is just insane
Bryan is just murdering that kit, so good!!
Agreed! His hands would also be bleeding out and around worn out, sweaty finger bandages after a show for that matter.
This is the greatest live performance ever, by anyone.
Fully agree 🤯
honestly this is almost Neil peart levels of drumming. beautiful song
Who said nerds can’t be badass?
1:51 one of my favorite drum fills of all time
omg it hits like banger every time.
The wonderful wall of sound ... the awesome melodious drone of HUM
I can't get over this band, track and that guitar part towards the end.
Damn this sounds incredible... best Hum song, IMO!!
Sounds better live then on record too. And Dreamboat might be their best song ;p
Greatest use of a phaser pedal during breakdown.
Good lord that’s good.
when I think of 90s music, this is the first band that pops into my head.
Isn't this the most underrated band on Earth? Love this! Such a powerful band
I love that huge sound, man.
RIP BRYAN. much sadness. That Man and his kit was the gel for their whole sound.
The ending section from 4:31 is so incredible still.
It's the riff that I immediately think of when I think of Hum. Brilliant!
Awesome Band! I can't understand why they are not getting the recognition that they deserve?
And that's how it's done. RIP Bryan.
Farewell good drummer. May you find rest in the sounding world...
Awesome few BPM faster than the record but nothing is lost. Extra energy no downside
AWESOME that you were able to find a video in such good condition! this is so gloriously heavy....
I've been known to take care of my possessions, whenever possible ;)Happy to know you liked the sound & vision captured on the tape, and for posting a note here.

Bryan was such a creative and dynamic player

Saw them late nineties at VZD's in OKC. They were amazing. Amazing drummer.

Send HUM in Oklahoma City... How how I wish they would see them again
I don’t know what this song means but to me it means I love boys with long hair
Rest in peace Bryan. Thank you.
I see the singer and I think of a young rocking Bill Gates.
RIP BRYAN. its my first time watching this performance so watching and hearing bryan brings a tear to my eye.
They sure played the fuck out of those instruments!
Man when i found out they debuted in 91 with fillet show thats up top respect man
Memories. Loved them back "in my day"
What a performance. Amazing band
Such an insanely good song. Sheesh
Absolutely amazing!

Absolute ferocity.
God how i wish a band like this played the Grammy’s now and just blew everyone in the crowd into oblivion
Lucky seen these guys twice
Matt Talbott reminds me of D-Fens from Falling Down
Hopefully he doesn't try to order breakfast when it's lunch time😂
Holy shit

I just noticed Bryan lost a stick at 0:30

What's for afters? Massive shame in MTV only got two songs from this band. They deserve a whole set, this band inspired a lot of bands
is this song in drop d?
Most of their songs are
Looks like a Kurt Cobain 1992 MTV awards.
Please more bands like this and less Mumford/Lumineers
What happened to the drummer?
Does the drummer have a double pedal?
+Wurdswurth Nope. he always played single pedal if im not miskaten
+Liam Fernandez So good.
***** does he? I know all of his drumming in Hum can be done using a single pedal. anything to back up this information?
Are they playing to a backing track In this?
negative
That was not a thing back then. Real music by real musicians.
@@BockwinkleB yea ok “boogin shBockwinkle” it just sounds a lot like the studio version that’s all
