This band was, and will always be my favorite. No one else has ever created the textures and atmospheres they have. Overlooked, underrated and basically screwed by the universe. This is TRUE art.
they never really seemed to want to be more than what they were, from what I've read about them, they didn't even really label themselves a band, and rarely even had intentions if touring. can't say that got screwed if they totally rode in their terms
@@SloshJomba698 Agree 100%! When I say screwed, I mean in terms of financial success, not real worth. In that respect they are VERY successful! I can't help but dream of a world where I turn on the radio and hear "Again at #1 this week, it's Hum!" lol....but I like to dream!
Its kinda funny, been a fan for a while now, and at first listen I was a little unsure of the new album but this kind of hits the nail on the head with it honestly
I'm just so thrilled that I'm not the only one that knows of Hum and loves them to death. Every song on You'd Prefer An Astronaut makes me basically tear up.
I think it was 1997 or so and I saw them play at West Side Park. I asked Brian before the show if there was any way they could play boy with stick and he wondered how I even knew of that song. It was one of the few I never heard live. Its right up there with Diffuse. Wear your earplugs, kids!
Same with Puppets and Aphids even though they have a different vibe and are from a slightly different era. Hum just knows how to create amazing music no matter if it’s mellow, heavy or BOTH! Haha
Hum is one of the best bands ever. I wish more people knew about them, but I think the fact that most people don't makes their music that much more beautiful and ethereal. Everything they have ever done is amazing.

I heard them called "shoegaze" so I checked out some other shoegaze labeled bands and they sucked ass, at least compared to Hum. Swervedriver, Dig, and Slint were a few but they just sounded like generic alt-rock to me. These guys are like extremely heavy psychedelic rock

Hum always reminded me of Smashing Pumpkins or a more melodic Deftones without the radio-friendly bigger budget major label sound. What they should have sounded like to me.
When I saw Hum play this song at Furnace Fest after years of imagining how great it would be to see/hear this played live. I started to have near panic attacks because of the rush. The only moment in my life where I can seriously say music gave me a complete feeling of euphoria and terror at the same time. And no I wasn't on drugs. +Caleb Keegan there may be an influence from Hum that Chino Moreno acknowledged, but The Deftones took it further with deeper sounds that grip the heart and soul. "This is a heavy record, and it's where Deftones get a big part of our influence from, tone-wise. There are these huge chords going on, a huge backbeat, rolling basslines going on underneath, a lot of that has directly inspired certain songs. There's a wall of sound guitar, it's heavy and even bombastic in a way, but it's produced very well. We approached the producer about doing something for us, I think around our first or second record. I think the vocals are an acquired taste, he didn't have the best singing voice and he talk-sings, but the lyrics are very scientific, he sings about the stars and astrophysics, really odd topics, but the songs are really warm, there's a romantic vibe there as well. I knew I had to pick some records that inspired us that were older records, and this is one - I listen to this now and it's stood the test of time, and Deftones were definitely influenced by it". (Chino Moreno)
Caleb Keegan saw Korn live in New York City @ The Limelight old church in 1995. Never heard Deftones before. Steph started playing Bored and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up the spider sense tingled. Ran to the front of the stage . First time seeing Deftones Steph had a red ESP guitar with a Decal that read Pervert! Maybe that’s why I like Hum and Deftones so much and one other insane guitar sound band is My Dying Bride.
I first heard this song when I found the Stars CD single in a music shop. What an absolutely punishing gem... Still gives me goosebumps (even listening through youtube on laptop speakers). Rest in peace, Bryan.

Basically I was in some Halloween store browsing for masks in the 90s and this was playing in the store, and it was on mtv and there was a music video for it and everything I looked at the video for a bit it was 1:00 in and the band was in a sunny field just walking around while the song played it had this greenish effect to it. without a doubt one of their best songs. I love the guitar layering and how progressive it is. You have to listen to it a couple of times, but after that it grows on you and is catchy as hell. Definitely put this on repeat.

I’ve been a massive fan of Hum for years before the whole zoomergaze trend started, and I’d always considered them shoegaze adjacent. I’m sure many people who aren’t Zoomers and are just fans of heavy shoegaze would agree with me
@@omnis1182 they're space rock at best. stop trying to call everything shoegaze. no one was ever calling Hum a shoegaze band (because they're not) until recently, where now people are calling anything and everything shoegaze because guitars. you don't have to call everything shoegaze. btw deftones aren't shoegaze.
@@ab8817Dude, you need to chill the fuck out, it’s really not that serious. I am not the brain dead tiktok trend hopping shoegaze zoomer you think I am. I’m a grown ass man. We are each entitled to our own interpretation of the music and where it fits sonically. I was interested in a fun debate as to why Hum can be considered to have pioneered a modern shoegaze sound, but now I see you are kind of an angry mumbling nerd. Get off of the social media and spend some time outside.
They do have a similar sound in some songs, when things get real heavy, but they’re definitely not shoegaze. I would say Cloakroom is a decent measure for how shoegaze something is.
@boywithstick mines from the pod....we're cool like that

Anyone who doesn't like hum deserves to be deaf.
