Based on the job our "politicians" have been doing for the past 60 years, maybe it's time people running for have to take a test to determine if they really are qualified to hold office. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of current office holders, at all levels, would fail miserably.
I came to that revelation earlier this year. The world is run by the bold and risk adverse moreso than intelligent who are to apprehensive to seek powerful positions.
The basic problem with the Presidency is that there are no personal consequences for the man who occupies the office --- Scumbag Trump can lock up little kids in cages but he won't be prosecuted for it because he was performing "border security"
Moral of the story: go the Al Franken route. Take several years to learn about politics and government, THEN run for office. Not for President mind you, start with something small, like state senate. Get the experience before you jump in the deep end and realize that you can't swim.
That logic didn't work for Bush W. He really sucked...and everyone just let happen anyway. Then we f'd up again and ended up with Trump. And he won't just crawl under a rock where he belongs. Hopefully, he'll be bunk buddies with El Chappo in prison.

Oh well, when people treat politics like entertainment (and they obviously do!), it's no surprise the main feature of a successful politician is - to be an entertainer. Sad. This world is completely upside-down. "Comedians" like Bill (and many others) obviously do more politics than the politicians do. Those, in turn, do more fun - we only can laugh at them, though we should rather cry realizing what the job they are paid for is. From all taxpayers' money - this is for killing. And yes, Billy is right; neither Rock nor Matthew can fix this mess. Pls, stay in your field, gentlemen; you are good in that one. If a top brain surgeon goes playing golf in which he is an average, that's minor; he can do it for fun and relax from a stressful job; that's understandable, nothing wrong with that. And if he by chance is over an average, that's a bonus. But I guess nobody will ask Tiger Woods to perform brain surgery on their kid just because he is a top golf player and also has some "experience" with the hospital, right...? So, we should really stop treat politics/politicians like an entertainment
I agree completely. I’ve been saying since before the pandemic, we need a set of rules for candidates. Like a competency test on the US Constitution and no bankruptcies. It’s easier to be voted president then it is to get a job as a janitor at the White House.

I hate it when people say thy like a candidate because "he's not a politician". Firstly, you are a politician from the day you announce you are running for office. And to be a good politician, you've got to know how to get things done. If you had a toothache, would you go to some you liked because "he isn't a dentist"?
Also, to the extent that politicians are corrupt or separated from the people, perhaps that's a problem is the system, not the individuals. Any new individual will be infected by the same system. What you need isn't a saviour, it's significant reform to the system, at the very least. Money out of politics, and politics out of the voting system.
Well to answer that -would you go to just a person you liked instead of a dentist for your toothache? My family does. Where Bill's thesis falls short is the fact that Politician's real skill is getting elected. Few of them have much talent for actually doing the job once they actually get it.
Bill was talking about the top people in the top jobs. That was pretty clear to me. He wasn't talking about municipal politicians. Knowing how to get elected is just one skill of many that the top people have to have. It isn't the ONLY skill by any stretch.
@@bakedalaska4363 I would hazard that most Municipal politicians have the job because no one else wanted to do it. and their political organization is likely restricted to family and friends. The man running for president on the other hand has a massive organization who's only purpose is to get him elected. Just look at the campaign budget for the presidential race. It's not the best man, or woman, who wins, they likely don't even make it to the preliminaries. It is pure luck if a competent president actually gets elected. I've lost a lot of respect for Bill due to the way he is jumping through hoops to portray President Biden as the best man for the job.
That's why the U.S. needs a parliamentary system like the UK --- professional politicians with many years of experience elect the Prime Minister --- the U.S. Presidency is a big joke because it's basically a celebrity popularity contest not based on merit or qualifications

Because democracy means that anyone can be in charge if the majority supports them, what you are suggesting is anti-democracy. Forcing people to adhere to policies that practically eliminated COVID within the country within two months of discovery, making people navigate life in a normal economy and health environment. Coercing customers into purchasing electric rather than internal combustion engines through the selective pricing of license plates and converting almost all public transit vehicles to electric. Manipulating nature so that rice can grow in briny and highly alkaline soil and pushing back the man-made desert ecosystems by developing planting methods that hold down the shifting sands so that the soil can absorb the rainfall and support plant life. Building the most comprehensive road and rail infrastructure in the world practically overnight. Fourteen percent of Chinese are dissatisfied with their government. @@mikiohirata9627 I am very much in agreement with you. I wouldn't say that democracy can't do these things, but I think your arguments for why it is exceedingly difficult are quite strong. The strides made by the Japanese after World War Two were amazing in their own right and pretty much accomplished under a single, very conservative, political party. Government was adept at distributed resources to target industries controlled by old industrial families who committed to following the national game plan. Peoples' basic needs were taken care of (though from what I understand local level bureaucratic red tape was crazy) and in exchange the people were expected to, and did, support the government and its initiatives. This was much more efficient than the lassaiz-faire approach of the United States and the European allies (although to a certain extent the same thing occurred in West Germany). I'm more optimistic about our long-term survival, though that's not to say that I think the days of all out war are entirely behind us. @@82Jaster in Reagan's defence, he was politically active before he became President - and even Governor. His was certainly not as much of an outlier as Trump's.
That's okay, he mentioned Arnold Schwarzenegger and Reagan another time when he was dissing Republicans for too often nominating/supporting celebs for public office :)
Exactly
It's insane that there are more qualifications and experience needed to get hired as a manager at McDonald's than there are to become president of the United States.
100% true thank you Bill!!! Ur the best!!
Ps. We need ReForm
What Bill is really asking for is competent government run by competent individuals who have a proven track record of governing. It is a rewording of Socrates' criticism of Athenian Democracy. The real concern is that the electorate always fall for the showperson.
Exactly!
We should promptly stop asking politicians to be showmen, and educate children - the future voters (the adults are not corrigible enough) that politics is A SERIOUS and RESPONSIBLE JOB, under normal conditions.
When we give it to the dilettantes - it's maybe fun, for a while, and then mostly it's a tragedy with the long-term consequences.
But how could any new governor have a "proven track record of governing"? If you're not the governor then you're not governing. Once 8 years are up then a new governor has to come in who's never been a governor before. Thems the rulessss.
@@Fireglo are you serious with this? Or is this parody. I honestly can’t tell anymore.

The quote at the end was originally, “I’m good enough. I’m smart enough. And gosh darn it, people like me,” and was made by Stuart Smally, a character on Saturday Night Live played by Al Franken. He later became a Senator.
And one of the good ones too.
He's the one person who is a celebrity I would feel confident in having as President. He is politically savvy.

Al Franken is active producing his UA-cam podcast under “Al Franken” channel here, for those interested. He has a lot of interesting views to share. Very reasonable usually.
Ironic that some politicians try to be celebrities instead of good public servants.
You know we're gonna end up with the whole slew of Kardashians running soon enough. And if our track record tells us anything, at least a few will get in.
Have you noticed how different the last five months have been?
Yeah I have Bill. It's been shat! You say that like this guys doing a great job.
Matthew Mcconaughey could actually run Texas better than Greg Abbott. The bar is not high.
Exactly. The bar is not at all high and that's not because of celebrities who want to enter the field. It's because the so-called professionals are terrible at their jobs.
You're beautiful. Your partner is lucky asf !
If we manage to get a non-GOP governor in Texas, then he's going to have to be better than "ok". Whoever it is will have to be near perfect or it will backfire and you'll get 40 more years of GOP domination in Texas.
But that would still be terrible
Booyah Bill, you really put why celebrities should stay tf out of politics in a nutshell
We do not elect professionals... We elect based on childish ideas of popularity. We elect based on the need for people to side with our idiotic ideas and beliefs.
BTW Bill, the professional you are describing is not a government of the people, by the people, for the people... You are describing a ruling elite.
Because there's no elites in Hollywood...
@@bil186 Here's the problem with the system in a nutshell... If poverty was a problem of the elite and powerful... Then there would be no poverty.
Its easy to deal with poverty when your only exposure to it is numbers on a spreadsheet. Change the numbers on the spreadsheet and problem solved... Right?
Thank you Bill!
Well said. It would be nice if the vast majority of the citizenry, including those celebrities, would realize the truth of what is said in this video clip. It's also desperately important that they do.
yeah that's what we need more of: professional politicians
@magat exterminator yeah, and the bigger disgrace the last 5 months.
Joe has been in politics since I was 8 years old.
@@JimmytheGOAT314 --- Mighty Joe is draining the filthy Trump Swamp --- America thanks him for it
@magat exterminator yes more professional POLITICIANS that lie and steal from the PEOPLE....GREAT IDEA
Not necessarily professional politicians, but people who understand government. For example, people with legal backgrounds often have an education tailored around understanding the law and government. Those that then move into politics often come from real world experience that ranges from court room matters to government assistance to corporate advice, all of which would be useful when governing. For example, I worked for years in immigration. I can tell you first hand that most people have no idea how complicated the system is or how it works. Also, having worked in immigration, I have a level of empathy that comes from meeting people as individuals and not as statistics. My point, and I think his, is that there are people out there with the right education and experiences to be capable and effective leaders. Being “popular” might get you the vote, but it doesn’t inherently make you qualified for the job. Just a thought. I do agree with you that we need limits on career politicians along with many other reforms.
I'm pretty sure our current politicians can't answer most of those questions.
But Biden can, and that's the point he's making.
Exactly!
@@FreakieFan 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

@@FreakieFan sure he is (was) very competent at shoveling money and favors to his corporate pimps so they can screw over the masses. I'll give him (and you) that much.
Thanks, Bill. Just because so many politicians are malignant narcissists doesn't mean that being one is sufficient qualification for the job. Governance done right is hard work, requiring experience (and preferably legal training), and it often gets you voted out of office for doing the right thing. And God help us, the Chinese are running rings around us, and we need competent people to deal with them.

I work with a lot of folk who say things like 'I'll vote for anybody but a politician'. My response is usually something along the lines of 'I presume, then, that in the event of a heart attack you will go to anybody but a physician'. It makes about as much sense.
Yep! I then ask them why they don’t get their car fixed by their cardiologist. Anyone but a mechanic should be able to fix your car, all a mechanic wants is your money 🙄
OTOH, the field of medicine doesn't specifically attract narcissists (which politics does), nor does it attract people who desire to have power over other people's day-to-day lives... which politics ALSO does.
Quite the contrary... the field of medicine attracts people (usually) who want to HELP other people.
