I think the problem you face is that the fire place is painted one colour in its entirety. If you break it down it consists of the top half which is mostly covered by the mirror, the wooden shelf and the bottom half. If you somehow restored the wooden shelf to actually be wood, paint the top half the colour of your walls and dedicated the accent colour to the bottom half it would all seem more cohesive with the rest of the space instead of appearing as one big barney blob. Anyways that’s just my two cents, I’m sure whatever you come up with will be amazing ❤
I like the idea of cleaning up the brick on the inside and then maybe tinting it a bit darker. Then mosaic on the floor outside! I think the mustard colour will get old fast and part of why it looks so good is because you were dying to change the purple colour! But I think what you said about the copper being really neutral will make it fit with the space in a more harmonious way rather than being a focal point! Just my two cents 😄
I love the brick inside her fireplace. When we downsized and moved into a small home built in the early 50s, I was so excited to expose a brick wall. My husband wanted to paint it, but I said no. Now he's really happy with it also. Designers are always talking about "bringing in texture." Nothing does that like brick! And Kelsey's brick is actually beautiful shades of a sort-of rose, nicer than mine. But I know she'll paint it....
same! I bought a house last year and guess what the sellers did RIGHR before listing. yup. painted the brick a boring white. I was so mad but too busy to strip it off
I’d leave the brick inside the fireplace as is, just use a transparent sealing product, it would stop the dust and would make the brick color look nicer. Providing it’s not a working fireplace of course.
that brick looks a lot more natural than the plaster. personally I would demo the front too to see if it reveals more brick. restored brick fireplace, wood mantel and painted the top chimney half in a colour you already have in your living room would look great.
Kelsey, I love your process. You take your time, weigh your options, and yet are not afraid of being different… this video was very soothing and calming to watch for me.
I appreciate how candid you are with your design journey. It is OK to try something, live with it and then decide you don't love it. Then you get to try something new. Very inspirational and motivational.
Okay imo- leave & seal the back brick, install a mosaic pattern on the hearth. I would extend the hearth’s width into the room more to make the proportions better, maybe remove 1-2 wood planks in that area. Paint the lower half of the fireplace a bold color, whatever you want, this could easily change whenever you feel like it. Take the mantle piece back to wood or paint it black to go with your other hardware. Then paint the top portion a warm, mid tone neutral. Either a warm white or a slightly darker version of the green/beige.
Love the brick and interested to see the copper. While the individual tiles are very pretty, I hope she doesn’t go with the checkered. I know it’s popular, but I feel like it’s gonna age like Tuscan kitchens.
how about painting the mantle a different colour? I think it will look weird if it's copper and I don't know if the texture will look right on the molding
The exposed bricks actually look pretty good and compliments the other flooring, i dig it but it takes away from the copper mantel... i cant decide which way to go🙈
Could the entire fireplace be brick underneath that plaster. I mean the plaster has to be on something right? What was common construction practices of fireplaces at the time of the build? It would be fun to find out!
Maybe there's pictures in local libraries or plan & blueprints in the local government? 🤔 have you seen your neighbors fireplaces? Maybe reach out on a local neighborhood social media group and ask for pictures of other fireplaces to see what might be under there based on other people's fp photos. That could be an interesting segment!

Right away I was rooting for antique tile design and the lovely copper color. I haven't watched it all the way through yet, so I am excited to see the final choices. But I totally agree with Elliot, I never liked the deep burgundy color.
you should either clean it back to the raw brick and glaze it or tint it and then glaze it.and you should definitely paint the fire place copper it will ad some warmth
I love green too. And I always have problems with choosing the right one. The lighter green you have I would like to know the color name and brand. I like seeing how it’s ok to refresh a room and what you choose doesn’t have to be forever unless you want it to be. It was fun to see Elliot have fun in the Barney costume.
My grandpa was a professional house carpenter and built my cottage. When he installed our brick fireplace he hated the red brick, so he took black paint and carefully tinted the bricks to distress them. This was in the1950s, so if you have an older section of the house with an older fireplace that could look quite nice!

Personally I'd either paint it the same as the walls or maybe a slightly darker shade of the same colour or else remove it entirely. I removed a non working fireplace from my lounge and it completely transformed the room.
That's what I was thinking. What's the point of a non-working fireplace in such an odd location. Just remove it and put a large mirror and some large plants in that place.
I still think she should keep it because it adds a statement as soon as you walk into the house, however I agree that she should paint it either the same color as the walls or shade of green like how she had it before since the whole room has green accents
It’s funny that you keep giving him spaces to decorate and opportunities for input and he just chooses whatever’s easiest 😂 Everything solid lol. I feel your struggle trying to explain design principles to your partner. When someone doesn’t have as much exposure to different styles, it can seem like they don’t bring their own taste to the table, just “no”s to everything you suggest (at least for me). I admire that you are putting so much effort in coaxing input out of him.
I would clean the brick first and see how saturated the colors are. I do absolutely LOVE the brick. I think the copper ( which was my choice as well) will go beautifully with it.
I havent even watched the full episode yet, but I just have to mention how you guys as a couple always makes me smile! You are so cute together, made for each other 🌼
Hi Kelsey ! I think the first version of your fireplace with two colors was fine. I would go back to this look, keeping the brick in the insert, framing it with large flat molding, and I hope you went for option B which is my favorites. Can't wait to see the reveal !
I would LOVE to see internal brick, then a mosaic like the Apartment Therapy inspo pic you included in the hearth. Also +1 to the other comments about breaking up the top and bottom parts of the fire place!
If it's possible to clean the brick (or stain/paint), don't you think it would be possible to keep it on the floor with a nice trim ? Maybe a copper trim? 😏But I don't know if it's worth it, or if it would go with the style of your home. Concerning the color of your fireplace, I would concider painting two different colors? I think the block dark color takes a lot of attention, on this wall, which does'nt have a lot to catch the attention (meaning contrary to if there was two high bookshelves on each side, for example). Anyways, I am sure you will do something stunning as usual! 🌟 Excited to see how it will turn out! 🤩
RETURN to BRICK, NATURAL wood mantle, SEPARATE WALL COLOR over the fireplace if you paint the brick; KEEP interior PLAIN BRICK, SLATE for hearth. Stop making everything an element, make one part the star. Lose the big mirror. Imho. Sending love & prayers, have a blessed day 💖✝
I hope you tint the brick (it's lovely and has serious potential). I may be boring, but I also liked the middle tile option. No matter the decision I really enjoy the Making Home series. :)
I'd go charcoal (not quite black) with copper accents and match the tile to the entry. OR I'd go back to a green. One of the issues is that the space is SO cohesive EXCEPT the fireplace. So it sticks out. You need an element that ties it in.
I love that you revealed the brick, and like the idea of cleaning it up to tint it, maybe a bit darker brown over brick red. More chocolatey color would work well with the copper paint color, I loved that idea, but maybe just under the mantle and wall color behind the mirror. I feel like it cuts off the wall color as is rather than extending it around the room.
My vote is for the copper color on the fireplace! I love that there was brick inside the fireplace, but if you tile over it, my guess is you’ll choose the green-tinted tile to make a nod to the sage green paint color that you have elsewhere in the room. Looking forward to seeing the reveal!
I like the idea of the top half being a different color like the wall color. I think the bronze color or a green black would be nice for the bottom. I would paint all the brick black and use the gray/green tile or checkered OR paint to hearth brick black and add a thin tile boarder to help with the transition from the floor (not sure how this would look)
Love the mustard...but you'll need to paint the mirror frame. Also I accidentally came up with a hack that is now standard practice for us: Getting a paint that matches your ceiling and painting a line at the top of the fireplace or wall before you paint the final colour allows you to get a cleaner line when you cut the new paint colour. When we painted our house the walls were originally a yellowish brown and we were painted a light kind of sea breeze teal over it. When we started painting it was hard to get a clean line on the top of the wall and cover the old colour. Then we came up with the idea to paint around the top of the room with a close match to our ceiling. Then we were able to cut the new colour in nice and smoothly. It was a game changer and is now standard practice when we paint a room.
I'm noticing everything in your room is a solid color. The only thing I saw that has a print, was one checkered pillow. Everything is solid on solid on solid. I think you need to incorporate a more decorative vintage tile and do a fun print on the chair. The rooms needs some texture/prints.
Right? and she said in a previous video he uses the kitchen up there for his stuff, and he was using up there as an office. Feels so separated now, I wonder if she regrets separating it like that.
I think she doesn’t actually mind. In another video she did a mini makeover for his space up there and has said before that it’s kinda nice for them to have separate spaces in the home
I like the mosaic tiles. They’re different and unique. Try the copper first. If you don’t like it just switch it back. Whatever you do. Make it BOLD and BEAUTIFUL so when you first walk in it’ll be a true statement and show stopper!
Can't wait to see the results!!!❤😊 Sorry Girls team can you guys do a video on a library room like floor to ceiling bookcases and make it magistical?!?
I love brick ..❤️ more brick, it gives testure, class. And parhaps different mirror ..or add frame...it looks like fake fireplace, to plastici, and all is organic and classy, Chic in your home.... This is defintly working progress... Prahap couple off coper schels behind next to fireplace to make it more balanced conected....
Making home is also about compromise and fun and I think with the 'choose your own design' game you achieved that. They say better safe than sorry for a reason, you made the right choice by having the fireplace checked! I like the bricks but I don't know if once cleaned that's the finished look you're after
I completely agree with the change in the light fixture. Seems to be more balanced with the room by its shape and its size. I love the other one well, especially for a lamp. But it just didn’t have the right flow for that room.
Copper is the best fireplace choice! You can do terracotta brick stain & might be able to put in some copper pigments in it for the fire box area. A slightly smaller checkered tile look w a border is timeless.
Think a faux wood beam mantal would add to it..maybe a Franklin electric stove in the insert, leaving the brick natural making your fireplace a statement piece in the home
I’m so excited for the revamp. It’s nice to see that it’s always evolving for you too. Some rooms, even if they are designed an executed to all your wants you can ALWAYS change it again. And again!
I’m begging TSG to clearly label their makeover videos “part 1” whenever they don’t feature a final reveal. Or at least let us know earlier on in the video instead of in the final few seconds!
This was my first thought, before even watching the video. My first thought was just to steal the grey from the tiles in the hallway and paint the "not barney" color to that grey. Second thought after finishing video: Tile option b if you go for a strong color on the wall like your idea of bronze. Personally my preference would be tile c, do some tinting on the bricks inside and do a lighter color on the fireplace itself like white, creme or lighter grey. But maybe that is just a bit to safe. Another cool idea would be to do the green or dark grey color your had at the samples for the fireplace so it stands out more than a soft white would. I would probably do that. Paint it like a charcoal grey not too dark still grey but definitely on the dark side. So it vibes with the kitchen then you can have fun with restoring some color to those bricks. Cannot wait for the result😍
I think the problem with the fireplace is the big background for the mirror. You could absolutely do without that. Just hang the mirror, or a different mirror and see how it looks. The background makes the whole fireplace look ginormous! And I would definitely tint the brick and leave it alone. No tile or expense needed.
love the surprise bricks!! makes me wonder if there are some more under the fireplace paint ? i vote for cleaning them and keeping them but depending on how the rest turns out it might be nice to tone them down with a stain
Mason pros say that you shouldn't paint brick because apparently brick needs to breath. They recommend tinting instead, but I might do some research into that and sealing it just to be sure you're not gonna ruin that brick in the long run.
I was thinking that it would look lovely with the fireplace painted a darker green and the brick inside and the mantle painted copper. Then green and copper tiles on the hearth to pull it all together
The brick is very cool. I like the tint idea but I don’t know if it actually works. You can add some edging or transition between the flooring and the brick so it looks more polished. If you decide to go with tile I think mosaic looks the best. I’m guessing you went with checkered though. I vote for copper. I think mustard looks good on its own but doesn’t quite fit into the whole room.
My choices would be either expose all the brick of the fireplace, paint the fireplace a neutral colour in the same colour scheme as the walls or use copper leaf on the fireplace but with the mantelpiece painted a different colour to break it up a bit

I also envisioned two different colors for top and bottom.
Oh man thats an amazing idea!!!
Absolutely, the problem with Kelsey design concept of the chimeney is not color, it's the distribution of color 100%
1000% agree
Never thought of this but I think you’re sooo right!

The mustard is really quite nice, but I fear it'll feel old right away, where the copper, I think, will feel a bit more vintage-ish as it ages.
It's the season for mustard right now because it's autumn, but I feel like as soon as this winter it'll get old as well.

I like the brick as is for the inside of the fireplace
You probably have a vintage fireplace behind the current one!! It was common in the 80s to cover original fireplaces.
I think the problem with the fireplace is the big background for the mirror. You could absolutely do without that.
Just hang the mirror, or a different mirror and see how it looks. The background makes the whole fireplace look ginormous! And I would definitely tint the brick and leave it alone. No tile or expense needed.
Option A for the tile, I would stain the brick so it’s not too opaque as well and I’m happy with the copper paint!
I like the mosaic option, it has an art nouveau feel to it
love the surprise bricks!!
makes me wonder if there are some more under the fireplace paint ?
i vote for cleaning them and keeping them but depending on how the rest turns out it might be nice to tone them down with a stain
I also hated it, sorry 😂 I’m not a brown paint person, brown leather and wood sure, love it!
Also I wrote this comment before I saw that you went with “copper”… girl that is a different shade of brown! 😂
Copper please. The ‘mustard’ will be cloying after a short while. The ‘green’ tile will transition nicely to the wall and chair.
I don't like any of the tiles, I would keep the brick and solve the level problem with the wood floor someway, maybe with a trim?
omgg i really like the dark green paint for the fireplace and the mosaic tile!!!!
Mustard goes so well with your kitchen! I would 100% pivot and embrace the new colour.
Mason pros say that you shouldn't paint brick because apparently brick needs to breath. They recommend tinting instead, but I might do some research into that and sealing it just to be sure you're not gonna ruin that brick in the long run.
I love the mustard too and definately the black and white tile 😊
Mosaic definitely. I like the brick. My fireplace is brick and it's so cozy
I like the larger tile or mosaic, I think you’ll go with the tile option! The Barney segment was sooo good, I died. 💜
I was thinking that it would look lovely with the fireplace painted a darker green and the brick inside and the mantle painted copper. Then green and copper tiles on the hearth to pull it all together
First make the copper paint on the fire place then go with the last option the gray mosaic
The fireplace color kinda goes with your hair
Elliot gets 10 partner points for trying on Barney
Definitely the mosaic! and I LOVED the green as paint color.
Would love to see the mantle piece a different colour from the rest of the fire place. Maybe wood or stone to match your tile choice.
The bricks really did look so good with the Barney colour
Green tile. No more mirror. Beautiful restored brick. That's it! 😊
Checkerboard option is it for me...along with the mustard paint. Great combo.
My choices would be either expose all the brick of the fireplace, paint the fireplace a neutral colour in the same colour scheme as the walls or use copper leaf on the fireplace but with the mantelpiece painted a different colour to break it up a bit
It will be more time consuming but I'd say clean the brick.
