With her accompanist and mentor Franz Rupp, this will always be the finest rendition hands down. Just heavenly. Distant 2nd but still better than all the rest--Leontyne Price.
This woman singing this song made me cry. Tears of joy ran down my cheeks. Oh beautiful beautiful Marian Anderson. You’re so brave, so very beautiful. Your song brings peace into my whole being.
I love how Marian Anderson sang "Ave Maria." Am so blessed to be able to hear her sing !!!!!!! What a wonderful and beautiful angel she was !!!!! Thank you to everyone responsible for this blessed recording !!!!! Gratefully, Robert S.J. Hu July 1, 2021.
The DAR hall could seat 3700. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the DAR and had Anderson sing in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. to an audience of 75,000.
The so-called white Americans should be ashamed for what they did to Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson, two of the greatest voices ever. How I envy the angels and I am now going to wipe the tears from my eyes. Thank you for posing, you have made a miserable old man very happy.
How all beautiful, graceful and saint is Mary the Mother of the Lord and ours, who inspires such beautiful works of art which pale before her name and holy presence. Pray for us oh most holy Virgin-Mother, the bearer of the Eternal Word incarnate!
Now, that’s the way to really sing the Ave Maria! Dozens of other people try to make up their own versions but…they are usually, non-Christians? This is exactly how the Ave Maria sounds!
Now everyone praises her, when she was up and coming she was denied to sing by a atrocious organization of white ladies DAR of which the First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was a member. Marian Anderson overcame such obstacles with her art and personality, RIP Ms. Anderson
Julio Klastornick, Actually, Schubert did not write this song as an Ave Maria. It was called "Ellen's Third Song" from a song cycle based on Walter Scott's " The Lady of the Lake".
@@johnsarkissian5519 Although this is often sung in Latin with the text of the Catholic prayer, one of the reasons I like Marian Anderson's version so much is that she sang Schubert's original German lyrics--which do include the words "Ave Maria" but none of the rest of the prayer.
It's funny how the "wrong" arrangement or orchestration can effectively decimate a peice of music... Take the 1812 for example, originally the first section of the overture was arranged and composed for a choir. However, the string arrangement became more favourable.... Mainly because it cost less to get an orchestra than an orchestra AND a choir in an environment it could be recorded.... However, the string arrangement is quite the mournful dirge compared to the choral version

Me too!
Tears were running down my face within less than a minute of her singing.
I coudn't have said it better.
This was early recording technology. Yet her perfect voice shown through.
No studio special effects, no 'Pro Tools' needed. Very few can do this.
Such an angelic voice,I know she is in heaven now with the Blessed Mother, and all the saints and angels praising our Heavenly Father!

What a masterpiece Schubert left the world of music ,sung by so many different artists all with their own interpretation and all very wonderful.
Simply Sublime !
Marvelous.
Yes-it is the very best! ❤❤❤❤❤
Una voz, una expresión, un sentimiento de gran profundidad. INMORTAL Marian Anderson
Good, clear German words, and almost the right amount of wild Romantic longing, Northern, misty and mystical.
Meravigliosa
OMG. First time hearing this. Haunting and beautiful.
Same for me. I'm blown away...
This is beautiful. Tears literally running down my cheeks....

When I first returned to the Sacraments, this song, and this version in particular, made me wonder how I could have stayed way so long.
Absolutely amazing. Thank you for posting.

Wow
She’s the only one, if memory serves, who makes a crescendo/decrescendo on the second syllable of “Maria.” Shapes it beautifully.

It was First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who sponsored the concert for Marian Anderson at the Lincoln Monument.
Of course
Your quire right, and what a shame, because they missed out on such a gift. Thank god for progression. We are now blessed to enjoy such a gem.

Just 2 blocks away. OMG.
This is the best Ave Maria, as Schubert wrote it, human voice and piano. not orchestra.
