My mom loved this song. As a child I remember her singing it around the house. Each time she heard it she would cry. I didn't understand why she was so touched as she didn't even know the meaning of the words. As I listen now, my tears are flowing. Mom being sentimental, certain songs touched her. I inherited that sensitive gene from my mom. RIP Mom.
In my youth about 70 years ago one of the few entertainments was to go to the cinema to watch movies. At Christmas time in my hometown Kotka in Finland 🇫🇮 they used to play Schubert’s ”Ave Maria” by Marian Anderson before the curtains were opened for the movie. (Marian had a Finnish accompanist, Kosti Vehanen on her tours.) This was the beginning of the Christmas for me, a young girl listening enchanted to Marian’s wonderful voice! 🌟💖🌟
This is Schubert.... If I had one wish for the world it would be this - that everyone could both hear and love this composer. His works are second only to Beethoven and Mozart, and I believe he is not given the recognition he deserves. He was a pall-bearer at Beethoven's funeral. He died, aged just 31
Marian Anderson voice is absolutely incredibly beautiful, she sings Ave Maria with pure devotion , of how this song should be sung for who it Honors . The Holy Mother Of God.
Anderson (contralto extraordinaire) at her best, here emphasizing her bell-like upper registers. In English, no less! And the Maestro closely follows her. Thanks so much for posting. It’s pretty rare that two artists of such limitless expressive power are paired. When it happens - a musical experience almost beyond belief!
Brings me to tears immediately it's so beautiful. The beauty. The time. Oh, all the wars for freedom. To think our current regime can just strip these away from all the land & personification of freedom & majesty. Damn. We Shall Overcome.❤️🇺🇸♥️
(I don't think she was expecting the applause from the orchestra and chorus.) I feel she was in touch with the meaning of the words as much as just singing--makes all the difference in the world, and it was beautiful.
When they announced they were going to replace Andrew Jackson on the twenty dollar bill with a woman I thought Marian Anderson would be a good choice. I can't complain with the choice of Harriet Tubman but I thought choosing Anderson would help right a wrong.
Simply Beautiful. I would like to find a re-mastered version of the original. The original would have been mastered on a disc recorder, or maybe a wire recorder, then onto an optical track on film, as the artifacts are apparent. This YT version was a distribution film copy, then through a film-transfer to NTSC video, and then down to 128bit/sec sample, compressed, as all YT audio; sad, but necessary. Having said that, it would be terrific to locate original media, or as close to that as possible. Perhaps it still exists in a reference library, studio, or private collection. We can always hope that to be true.
As beautiful as this sounds, I have never heard any other version of Franz Schubert's Ave Maria that in any way beats Walt Disney's in the 1940 animated classic Fantasia.
Those were different times. Everything is the opposite of what it seems. She went thru hell and back . Of course, her voice would resonate with the times. Oppressed people sing because not of happiness but because of malaise.
She sends chills down my spine. This lady was the best vocalist of the century.

I was just reading in wikipedia that Sibelius adored her, and wrote or re-arranged several (many?) songs for her.
Rohkea rokan syö.
I'm thinking of all the prejudice and forces she had to put up with and struggle against.
(I looked up Finnish sayings on Google.)

I love Schubert, my favorite of his is Wintereise, musical poem with beautiful lyrics, especially Lindenbaum
My favorite hymn song by someone who knows how to sing it.
A beautiful lady and a beautiful song. Brings me to tears. God bless her soul.
Singer and conductor were in the zone. FACTS..
Marion Anderson is amazing. Her voice is magical.
A voice of incredible warm and beauty! Only once in a century we have the privileg to have so a unique voice like the great Marion!

As always, I am immensely delighted with the grandiose Marian. And thanks to Maestro Stokovsky for not climbing on the singer's shoulders...
Most beautiful spiritual and inspiring. Thank you.

They realised they were in the presence of greatness.
Anderson and Stokowski : my idea of Heaven !
The most fabulous contralto of the 20th century!!!
Have to disagree. Ferrier gets my vote. A far more powerful and rounded voice.
Voix unique et tellement douce! Merci Mme Anderson!
O my God🥺❤️🌲🙏🏼

beautiful
천상의 목소리입니다. 참 듣기가 너무 편안합니다.
Google translate from Korean: "It is the voice of heaven. It is very comfortable listening."
I always get the feeling when I hear Anderson - there goes a Wagnerian soprano. I bet she could raise the rafters with that voice!
Exquisite style and beauty
Glorious!
There I was waiting for the choir to join in, lol!
Areal Oldname, me too.Her singing is beyond beautiful. 🙏💚
Very beautiful...
So Beautiful!

Clear and Angelic
Simply Beautiful.

Une merveillhe! Um Ange chante!
And she was a wonderful person.

Have you heard Josh Groban's rendition? Sooo good!!
LEOPOLD !
The English translation she's singing would be great to see here.
好美的聲音
She doesn’t look 47 here, looks much younger.
Voice quality sounds excellent too.
The inspiration of Leontyne Price!

❤
Nice.
jm ave maria en contralto
Best deal
I do not like the theology of "Ave Maria", but Marian Anderson does a fantastic job of singing it.
You don't like the bible?
Just HOW did Stokowski get into that tight shot? And ruin it.
Try and get some sleep
❤️To God Be The Glory ❤️
God is a pernicious illusion--grow up.
