Zetsche: Daimler Chrysler deal made 'substantial' loss

  • Dr Dieter Zetsche is chairman of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. He was instrumental in a disastrous merger between Daimler and US company Chrysler that ended in huge losses for the company.
He told HARDtalk's Stephen Sackur that with hindsight it was obvious the tie-up did not create any value and as soon as the problems became clear he had initiated a separation between the two companies. The two companies merged in in 1998, split up in 2007 and then in 2009 Chrysler filed for bankruptcy.

well, I do thank Daimler for letting chrysler take advantage of what they could, which was hadly anything. but the charger, challenger, magnum, 300 LX platform with parts also, suplliers, workers, and ideas came from it.

To word it a different way, Chrysler was better off being a PUPPET for Daimler than just being a 'friend' to Fiat because they're still using those platforms in their current ones.

The LX platform isnt a Mercedes platform, biggest lie ever told lol. Its just the former LH platform with Mercedes S class front suspension and E-class rear suspension. They also bent Chrysler over a barrel by charging them $250 a piece for NAG1 5-speed automatics. In 2011 after Fiat was in charge they tossed the Mercedes suspensions and in 2015 the old 5-speed autos for ZF 8speeds. In modern form they use no Mercedes parts unless they happen to be from the same supplier (window switches etc)

I lay the blame directly at the doorstep of Jurgen Schremmp and Bob Eaton. Firing Stallkamp was just the beginning of stupid decisions of Bob Eaton, not allowing Bob Lutz to even participate in the merger might be the biggest mistake since the Penn Central debacle. Both CEOs were not visionaries (Schremmp convincing Daimler Benz to buy Fokker Aircraft was a total failure that bankrupted Fokker and almost brought down Daimler Benz in the process. I was one of the few Daimler shareholders to vote no. I knew Bob Eaton was not smart enough and Juergen Schremmp was too impressed with his own self importance to have the merger work.
Zetsche really didn’t figure into the decision much but instead had to play clean up for Eaton and Schremmp

Schrempp was absolutely a visionary! He literally said "If they want them, we will build them", unfortunately his mind was focused on automobiles, and he was speaking about the M class, which was his focus. Jürgen tended to get excited and his attention would get drawn away. Fokker needed direction, but never got enough of it. Still was only one of many subs.

@@skontheroad you must admit though that allowing Bob Eaton to fire Bob Lutz, the real Chrysler visionary who knew the idiosyncrasies of the German supervisory board and the only guy that spoke fluent German IN THE WHOLE DAMN COMPANY was a terrible mistake. Schrempp was also the beginning of the bean counters at Mercedes Benz resulting in the current quality issues. “From first to the worst” is not a moniker that any company should aspire to.

    • @skontheroad

@vintagehaynesflute Much of what you say is, indeed, true! Except for the part about Schrempp being a bean counter. He was always the last one to follow the rules, including keeping within the budget. As far as the idiosyncrasies of the Board, having been Daimler's Board's personal babysitter, it is absolutely true that someone needed to be there to rein them in! I left just before the merger, so I can only speak to the German counterparts, but you are 100% correct. If they didn't agree to have someone by their side who understood the company culture and could help with the integration, it was a poorly executed agreement. And I get the feeling (as I always did) that Chrysler planned to squeeze out the Germans, apart from the name. It was too soon for that kind of merger--Chrysler wanted to add a luxury brand to their line--much like Marriott or Hilton did. But they were the first to try to do so, and it failed. That is my opinion
I always think what would have happened had I stayed. My life would be completely different! But the merger would have also gone much differently, I think! 🤔 You are right! Someone who spoke German, and "spoke Schrempp"--as well as understood American culture--would have been a huge help! But I chose a different path! Oh well!

This merger should have worked for a variety of reasons but didn't due to political infighting. Chrysler was sitting on billions in cash which Daimler siphoned off for other projects. In the early 2000's Mercedes was floundering and Chrysler's strong sales were keeping them afloat.

@@blackhawkedu1 it wasn’t a merge, Chrysler was bought by Daimler. And the American company was sabotaged.
All the good products of DaimlerChrysler were designed by Chrysler corp before Daimler bought them. (1999 LH platform, 1999 grand Cherokee, 1999 Cherokee reintroduction, dodge neon, and the cloud series. If you look those cars from that era you will notice high quality interiors, zippy engines, attractive designs and reability wasn’t bad at all.
The models made by Daimler Chrysler looked less “international” cheaper, and unreliable. And they sold the company just with each car interior made in the cheapest plastic ever and with noisier and slows 4 cil.
At the time of the buy out, chrysler was the most profitable auto maker in the world, had millions in cash and worth 40k millions as a company.
Also, in the 90s many Mercedes/bmw owners had a grand Cherokee that was the best in class. Going to the dealer for a grand Cherokee or a jeep for “your son” and looked the 300m with a very modern design cool blue backlit dashboard, compared to your look like grandpas car Mercedes.
It’s not necessary to be a fan of Chrysler to get that The company was a pain in the ass for Daimler (at least in America) and it was clearly sabotaged.
How to confirm the bad intensions of Daimler? When they sold Chrysler it wasn’t public just one day they let the world know they sold Chrysler to Cerberus ( an investment group ) INVESTMENT GROUP 😂, everybody knows, investment companies only want profit and never innovate, so the quality got down even faster until the 2008 crisis
(Look at the Chrysler productos of today)
      2022 grand Cherokee
      2022 grand wagoner
      2022 ram 1500
      2022 Chrysler pacifica
      2022 dodge hellcat
New ones are good quality cars (I’m talking quality perception) fiat and stellantis had good intentions for the whole group
Im not of fan of Chrysler (I drive a merc cla) but like automotive and corporations history
