I was trying to find the difference between the Nieuport 17 C.1 and the C.1 GBR. I noticed the one you shot down had the over-wing MG rather than the fuselage-mounted, synchronized one. I believe that's the difference, as the British synchronizing mechanism wasn't very reliable so the Brits mounted their guns on the top wings. They also had some on pivots, so they could angle them upward rather than being able to only fire straight ahead, which was quite handy.
Before synchro... they shot through the propeller (reinforced with deflectors). The top wing mount was from before even the deflectors (and a general unease to potentially render your vehicle unusable). These really early fighters were by design spotters and scouts by design, and pilots themselves (with the help of ground engineers) juryrigged these front facing guns.
Smart guys these early pilots, sad so many had to die due to policy (parachutes weren't issued to pilots, only balloon crews)
The Halberstadt D.II was a rather quirky little fighter. You may have noticed that the entire vertical tail pivoted to control yaw. The more typical arrangement was to have the rudder swing on hinges attached to the vertical stabilizer. You will be interested that the famous German ace, Oswald Boelcke flew a Halberstadt D.II that he had painted bright blue.
Perhaps Hermann "the German" might also paint his steed blue to emulate his hero, Boelcke?
17:06 chipped away at his machine just enough to put him out of the fight. Didn't shoot the pilot nor the plane any more than what was needed. A true knight of the sky.
Very smooth landing.
Good show Taff....that slit in the top wing might just be the ticket when sighting/lining your shot up me thinks. Pip Pip.
Excellent videography and music sounds as if it's from a Gramaphone, great series, good work.
An ace with 5 kills nice ,I used to play for hours on microprose’s Knights of the sky!
Love this series m8. It is the reason that i watch you. Keep it up! love to see you in a Sopwith one day!
Nice video
Very nice intro Taff!
Hans, wheres my jeans ??????? sir the wings needed a patch after your last landing .......... ok commando it is then
Have you got a settings vid for trackIR? because I would love to have it that good............👍
The on one person who disliked this video was the Britain that was shot down
I always wondered how you "Destory" a balloon....
17:04 I see Taff Inexile's father has landed.
Well done Taff. 2 points. As a Taff shouldn't you have a red scarf, not green. And from my vague recollections of Biggles, didn't you need special tracer ammunition to shoot down balloons?
Incendiary ammunition was used mostly for those missions. However I think the balloons were mostly hydrogen gas which only needs a hot object to ignite.
