    I was thinking the 20mm would have been better on the front. Then I though that would probably be a problem for the prop having that long ass barrel pushing through it.

      Well there is that, and then there is the 15 round mag problem. Could you picture having to reload every 15 shots like that?

      @@MagzGTV maybe have a belt fed ammo box linked in front of the pilot maybe? Of course one of the problems with that is they had cloth belts instead of disintegrating link belts and I don't really know the layout of the plane.

      @@telecleez The SPAD's both late production VII and early XIII's on a few had a breech loading 37mm cannon firing through the prop hub and was right on top of the Hispano V-8 between the V valley of the cyl's. The bad thing was fumes entering the cockpit was very bad and excessive every time the breech block was open up for reloading.

      MagzTV Considering the other design choices on that plane I can imagine an ammo can or a drum mag blocking the pilot's vision even further used.

    For the record the Roland C.IIa is one of my favorite planes out there :)
    Used to fly it way back in the day on Red Baron 3D. We had a nice formation set up when going after bombing objectives in online: 2 Bombers, 2 Rolands equipped with light bombs but mainly acting as gunship escorts, and 2-4 Fighters in escort. Honestly became far too effective of a formation especially with some of the guys we had in those fighters.
    Landing was very daunting though... Learned to keep it right above stall speed until I came over the hangers (very often just a few feet over the hangers) of the Aerodrome and then cut the engine. Once she was on the ground she was meek as a lamb in RB3D.

    I believe this was Kiffin Rockwell's second confirmed victory. Kiffin was a member of the Lafayette escadrille, and the second to be killed in action. Everybody but one, too sad to attend, who was stationed at the aerodrome came to the funeral.

    The other issue may well be the cannon shells NOT exploding due to the construction of the enemy aircraft (wood and linen = unless you hit something solid it may well just pass through.

    Are those squares on the side windows for pilot and gunner? Maybe they were there to give at least some visibility below the plane.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  4 роки тому +4

      They are windows yes, they don't work at all for the pilot, the gunner gets better use out of them but it's more for recon work than anything else.

    As regards nicknames for ww1 aircraft go, there is the well-regarded British S.E.5 fighter. For the distinctive enclosed canopy that it had early on (and was very soon discarded), it was referred to as 'the Flying Greenhouse'.

    I don't know how the AI handles these in RoF but In Wings over Flanders Field, these aircraft are by far the most dangerous opponent you'll face mid war. Nothing else is close. The only edge my Pup has over it is maneuverability and climb rate and those things aren't worth much against a 2 seater. AI observers are extremely accurate in WoFF.
    Unless I'm able to attack one from the front or lure one into ground fire, I leave them alone. There's no other alternative besides death. I was actually on UA-cam looking to see if someone has successfully taken one on, and what they did.

    Wins sexiest plane of WW1 :D but WHY ?? those side windows , which you didn't mention ? If I designed that plane, the window would be in floor for bombing, the gunner would get the front gun too, the pilot would seat lower, using mirrors to see ahead.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  4 роки тому +2

      I did mention, though not directly. . . Recon. It was a recon aircraft first and escort/bomber second. The side windows allow for some of the camera equipment of the time to be mounted and take shots while also allowing the gunner who was also the spotter to view the "target" in cover and take notes with some protection from the elements.
