Race isn't a loaded word. It's just a word. Folk offended by that are gonna find other things to complain about. It's not about whatever they are bringing up. It's just complaining for attention.
The whole idea here is to step away from the real world and it's silly hang ups. Not have them intrude, like this person is motivated to and already doing.
Well done. You fed the trolls.

Honestly? I don’t like most of these changes. Apart from them killing multi-classing now their killing spells too? It’s not a competitive game, almost no one does PvP. BUFF the week stuff! And stop NERFING everything that people put in their too 10s lists because it seems to me almost everything in One D&D will be weaker than in 5e
Also, the creation of the Ardlings worries me because it could be a way to streamline the game which would give WotC a reason to ditch some of the other races like Tabaxi, Owlin, Lizard Fold, and others by just making more ardling sub races

    • @smallolive

@@moderndavinci6599 eh maybe there's a place to fight that battle against the proliferation of darkvision, but Dragonborn really aren't it. They're literally dragon people. One of the defining characteristics of dragons is having excellent vision, in my opinion.
Doing a quick count, there are a little over 60 species and approximately half (like 29) don't have darkvision. More do than don't, but a lot of powerful options don't, and actually several that do are like, all the separate versions of elves and genasi from MMOM. So it's really quite even. Aarakocra, Changelings, Fairies, Firbolgs, Kenku, Harengon, Goliaths, Satyrs, Tortles, both Gith, Warforged, Halflings, and of course most Dragonborn don't have darkvision. Also, people tend to run darkvision like it's clear and sunny, when it's really more like a Ring cam. Personally I don't mind because I find "it's dark, you can't see" excruciatingly boring, but I don't think abundance of darkvision is the sole culprit for trivializing low light adventuring.

I'm not sure why, but I hate, hate, hate the "Large Form" ability. The ancestry stuff is good for flavoring your character how you want. Now that I think of it, I guess I'm taking umbrage because I have a gnome Rune Knight who's close to my heart. IMO goliath are natural born grapplers now, they can become large, meaning they can grapple up to huge enemies AND they can prone them with an attack, and grapple with an unarmed strike with advantage if the enemy is already prone, making it impossible for them to stand up. Straight up any class that have extra attack and is strength based can be a good grappler now.

I honestly don't love the change to species. Something becomes a new species when it can no longer interbreed with others of its phylogenetic relatives, but the 'species' in dnd can almost all interbreed. An elf wouldnt be a seperate species from a human because you can have half elves, etc. Races works fine but i understand its a touchy subject so if they just went with something like ancestry it would be a lot better. The term is already in the game for many of the 'species' abilities and pathfinder uses it already, its the best alternative to race i think

Good point about Guidance! This new version sort of helps lessen metagaming but also ends up increasing it. Like previously it was pretty tough to try and determine when to cast guidance, because you had to declare it in advance. Which led to people having to shout guidance all of the damn time just in case someone was going to try and do something, or "can I still cast guidance on that" if they were too late. This way, with it being a reaction helps get rid of that - but then on the other hand the requirement of failing the check in the first place makes it another kind of annoying. I think your solution is better!

Honestly I'm not a fan because now the primary use of it- yah know, the whole _banishing_ part- is basically never going to happen. The target literally needs to fail 11 consecutive saving throws to be banished, and the Law of Averages says that's not gonna happen often on over half the things you're actually going to want to banish. I think Elementals are the only ones that you're gonna have any chance for consistency on. Given that it almost completely removes the target from harm's way for the duration, the lack of saving throws keeps balanced and useful.

Changing it to species makes sense, and can make for far more compelling narratives of speceism in a campaign, if that's a storyline folks want to go towards, since it would be far easier to "de-humanize" a being by calling them a different species, more akin to a beast than a person.

  • @1000Tomatoes
    @1000Tomatoes Рік тому +3

I agree with the thing about "failing a check" stipulation for guidance potentially causing dms trouble, but I really like reaction cast time. It's less "well I would have cast guidance" and more "then I'm going to cast guidance to potentially save this check" and it's not useless in combat.
Another aspect to it that was buffed was it not requiring concentration, so it can no longer interrupt another con spell. However, it's got a 10 ft range now and instantaneous duration, so you can't can't help a creature unless you are nearby and you can't tap someone who's going to go scout ahead.
This is just spitballing, but if they want to make it so that it more about helping bad rolls than making a good roll better without telling if the roll succeeded or not they could make it so that it can only be triggered off a ability check (roll+bonuses) below the spell save dc of the caster before the dm says the outcome of the check. This way it's not a permanent +1d4 to everything, and it's more something that comes in clutch. Though, I'm not sure about spell save dc being the benchmark since at high levels that can get pretty high. Though it also means that it'd be worse for martials than spellcasters with magic initiate who don't want to put points in mental stats, though it still could be pretty good since it would help any roll below a 10 at least, and with standard array martials have at least one +1 mental stat. And at low levels turning a 11 into a 15 can be pretty good.

Honestly our group has been using the new guidance as basically an aura affect that only affects one creature at a time. The reason why I say aura is because it helps stop situations where something is happening and suddenly the person with guidance breaks the pace or mood by yelling that they want to cast guidance to help out. Instead of needing to remember every time and break up the flow of things instead the dm can just say "Roll an athletics check with an extra 1d4 from guidance". It can be even better than having more hit points.
For example, the Giant Poisonous Snake (should be "Venomous") from the Monster Manual. It deals piercing damage followed by a larger amount of poison damage on a hit. You could easily argue (if your DM is reasonable) that if you used that feature and it negated the piercing damage, you don't receive the poison damage. The poison is an injury poison that is injected via the bite, but if the bite doesn't pierce the skin the venom never gets introduced into its target, thus being rendered ineffective. Also the secondary effect is a part of the same clause (for want of a better term) as the piercing damage, instead of being a part of a separate clause.
This little loophole can arguably be used against other attacks that require injuring the target to cause its secondary effect. A peck (Bite attack) from a cockatrice is borderline for this trick, but directly supernatural/energy attacks that put the effect in a separate clause (lich's Paralyzing Touch , magmin's Touch) would still have the secondary effects be applied.
Just a fun thing I noticed during this video.

One thing i think is that multiclass for high level becomes much more common. The lvl20 boons are still lackluster, lvl 19 is a feat and lvl 18 is the last class feature. So a three level dip is now much less of a trade of.
Warlock (or any class that learns hex) plus 1 level in ranger means you can stack hex and hunters mark (or if Hex gets similar treatment for warlock it can stack even more). Could see it very fitting for rogues for example.
Goliath features are awesome, Dragonborn are great. The Ard seems less flashy, but the abilities are solid, though the Flyer seems a bit weird, as if they are crippled.
