Yep, and Mr. Ford specifically talks about his tone evolving to a lower gain sound as he moved from using the 335 and the OD channel of the amp to using a Tele and the clean channel with the boost or with the Zen drive.

The reason that Robben's tone is so difficult is because it comes from his fingers. I've played Robben's Dumble (the blonde one) and I couldn't get it to sound like Robben. In fact, I didn't even like the amp all that much. I played it for about 4 hours though a 4x12 Marshall Cab. I've heard him play though a Mesa Boogie and a Fender Super Reverb and it sounds exactly the same. BTW, I love your playing and you have your own sound and style and that should be the goal of everyone. Trying to sound like someone else is exactly that and a player will never be as good as the player that he/she is trying to emulate.

It’s true, I’ve heard Robben Ford play a number of times through different amps and it always sounds like him, especially if there’s a Zindrive in the signal chain. The Dumble ODS is a quirky amp, there is a magical clean tone and a great OD tone but there is a lot of not-so-great tones in between. We experimented with one for a couple of days and eventually found some great tones. Everything in interactive in the preamp section so changing one thing affects everything else. I asked Larry Carlton’s amp tech Rick Wheeler once about that and he agreed, he said that once they found the sweet spot on the ODS, they never change it except minor tweaks for a specific room.

I had a clone of Robbens ODS built (#102) by an expert on Dumble using the highest spec components … I just can’t get on with it that well… an awesome amp but you really need to know how to get your sound out of it.

I saw Robben and Larry at One World Theatre a number of years ago. After his soundcheck he noticed me standing on the side of the stage listening. He came over to talk and I told him he cost me a ton of money trying to chase the Talk to your Daughter tone. Two Rock Custom Reverb, Fuchs ODS/SLX 30 watt combo hand tuned as close as they could get. Brown Note DLite 44. He was cracking up. I also told him about all of his videos I had been studying over the years!!! He was very appreciative and after shaking hands, he lifts his fingers and says, it’s all right here.

@@carpediem4413- That was our experience with it as well. The current owner of the amp we had has it sounding pretty good now but it took a long time to get there.

Loved the "Talk To Your Daughter" sound, BUT I got hooked on his tone from the "Inside Story" album that came out in '79.
As best I recall from interviews long ago, it was his ES 335 (63-ish?) through a blackface Super Reverb amp, and maybe an MXR overdrive. That may be my fave RF tone. Loved that album!! If you haven't heard it, check out "Tee Time For Eric" or "Magic Sam" from that record to start with. Great stuff!

(Also a little of the sound is from an extra heavy 351 shape pick, but using one of the rounded corners instead of the pointed one.)

I have a Fuchs ODS and it sounds best when the OD and Midboost are activated at the same time. It produces a singing, almost horn-like tone. I haven’t been able to recreate it in the Helix, unfortunately. Also haven’t heard it in the Tonex Dumble profiles.

Re: Carlton's Dumble, in his 1st instructional video, he said the "Dumbleator" was a key aspect of his Dumble tone. Does anyone know if Robben uses a Dumbleator? I've never really understood what role it plays for Carlton. I don't see it mentioned much when people discuss Dumble tones. In some threads I've seen on it, folks say it just affects the effects loop. In others, folks say it significantly affects the tone even without effects, mainly by providing an extra low/mid bump and maybe some extra gain between the preamp and power amp. I haven't closely followed the Dumble clone world, but I don't recall seeing cloners duplicating the Dumbleator. I wonder if any of the tone capture folks have captured a Dumble with a Dumbleator in the signal path. -Tom

One of my favorite guitar tones ever is Robben's tone on Joni Mitchell's "In France They Kiss on Main Street" (I've always assumed it's Robben, but Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was also on that session; anyone know for sure?). If you don't know it, this link should take you to the main solo: ua-cam.com/video/uFksnIy2aO4/v-deo.html. But listen to the whole song; his fills are just killer throughout. And his few-second solo burst in the outro is just FIRE! -Tom

    • @TLMuse
      @TLMuse Місяць тому

Okay, I did some digging, and found an LA Times article from 1994 where Robben talks about that solo. So yes, it's him. And here's what's hilarious: Joni was in an experimental mood, and insisted he doing something unusual for the solo. He explains: “That guitar solo was recorded using a little MXR fuzz-tone box plugged directly into the recording console. Not to be using an actual guitar amplifier with a microphone on it just seemed absurd to me." He goes on to say how she coached him through the parts, with him objecting to the process the whole way. But "she was always right." Worth looking up!

I wouldn’t turn down a free Dumble but I genuinely don’t see the appeal that makes them so expensive. I see great players use them occasionally but they’d make a cigar box guitar sound like a ‘59 ‘burst so that’s moot.

I just watched the Robben Ford Interview on That Pedal Show. Afterwards, I asked "Do you know what Speakers, brand and models, are in that Cab? I read somewhere that Dumble thought EVM Speakers were the most "versatile."" They replied: "Hello! The info is in the description, and there is a close up of the back of the cab, but…. They’re Celestion G12 65 - the Rola Celestion ones. Robben has had them replaced a few times, he told us. Cheers!"
I also watched some old videos of Robben playing "Talk to your daughter" live, and he was using a guitar with Humbuckers on that specific tune.

@BeachJazzMusic writes, "The reason that Robben's tone is so difficult is because it comes from his fingers." Hah! As a mainly acoustic player, that reminds me of the experience I had with one of Martin Simpson's Sobell guitars at a master class of his I attended. I particularly loved the tone of tracks on his then-recent albums that used Sobells. So when he let us play his guitars after the master class, I thought, "This is it! I'll finally be getting that tone myself!" I picked up his Sobell, and holy cow, I could barely get anything decent out of it, certainly nothing in the ballpark of Martin's tone.
A year or two later, I bought a set of guitar lessons by Martin on VHS tapes (from Homespun), and spent several days wearing out my VHS player, going back and forth, and paying special attention to his right hand. I realized he oriented his right hand fingers really differently from how I did; I was using a somewhat classical style, and he was picking with his fingertips and nails at a very different angle. Those tapes totally changed my playing, as I started paying a lot more attention to the orientation of my fingertips and nails. There's still no way I'd get Martin's tone from his Sobell's, but you're right that "it comes from his fingers." There's so much variability in how guitarists use their fingers. -Tom

Dumble/ hotrodded fender/ jtm45 amp, zendrive, tele or 355 ... but really its all in the fingers/ brain of Robben. I am pretty sure getting close to that slightly rolled off saturated tone isnt that hard ... phrasing like him ... yeah well, impossible.
