Legendary blues guitarist Mr. Robben Ford has some important explanation about pedalboards he used, the relevance of each pedal to deliver good music......
Robben Ford is so one of the few master guitarists who's also an natural born instructor: in 46 yrs (since I started playing) I have never come across anyone who teaches jazz/blues the way Robben does. Lots of ppl are good at teaching jazz, but they don't sound original. Robben plays his chord voicings in position where he can easily grab the melody in the exact position he wants it voiced, and vice versa. You can easily look at his chord voicings without seeing a chord chart and understand what voicings/intervals he's using, and he makes it easy to understand why he chose those voicings over lower or higher octaves (I love how his use of higher 9th chord voicings 12th fret & higher, depending on key, of course, sound like horn fills!) I just love his playing and his teaching. And he's so kind and gracious. No ego. His pedal board is anything but boring: it helps him get *his* sound; therefore, it's brilliant!
One of the few guitarists out there that can make the hair stand up on my arms without any pedals at all! Touch, feel, timing, and tenacity! Robin has it all!
I’m not surprised that Robben uses this array of pedals because they fit perfectly with his style. He always has had great tone, going back to the early seventies.
I've only seen Robben play live once (living in the UK we don't get too many opportunities) This was about 15 years ago and he wasn't using a pedalboard at all. He had his Zendrive and a volume pedal going into a Super Reverb, and that was it. I have owned an original Zendrive for about 20 years and in my opinion it has no equal.
@@LowEndMarauder It's signed on the inside by Alf Hermida. By original I meant it was hand built by Alf. I bought it direct from him long before manufacture moved to Lovepedal.
@@kingstumble I wouldn't sell mine for a million $$$, it's in my will that it's going to my nephew (my protege') when I go to the gig in the sky (or wherever I'm headed 😇
Fabulous! love the gold top LP w/ P90s. gorgeous guitar. Roben Ford's tone has always been superlative. interesting to see a little peek behind the curtain. I believe he would sound amazing with just about any amp at the end of that chain.
Sweet guitar. 😋 I'm really wanting to add a p/90 Equipped Gibson to My collection. I have an Lp Jr. (2019) What a wonderful instrument from the beginning of Gibson's New Golden Era, as I like to call it. However, I've been dreaming of a new p/90 gold top LP, or, a new Lp special with a cherry Finnish. Perhaps when one is faced with such difficult decisions the only solution is to buy both of them!
Good to see him with the Goldtop LP, Been a fan since Miles of Aisles with Joni & LA Express . One of my favs is North Carolina . Go find it and crank it up to 10 ! You’ll thank me later .
Just clear concise and simple. I love RF’s setup. Simplicity is always the key. Ford’s always the best gear but simple. Gigantic pedal boards can be overwhelming and overrated imho. Only because I believe it covers up bad playing for some.
Yeah use you're ear. Search for response. Overall frequency response. I'm like this Luddite. I use a fork to tune. Maybe I'm cheep. I am also a hobbyist nothing serious here. The delay might slow you down entering the pog brings in a sophistication of octaves synthesizing that you don't know what the heck you are quite listening for. You have matured well Robin. Very cool
Like most guitarists he is a gear hound. He clearly loves playing different guitars but his board looks like it’s stayed the same for a long time. I’ll bet he’s tried every pedal out there but has farmed them out for this set up. Damn, that P90’s Les Paul is nice.
Mine is the hall of fame not the two. Looks the same as Ford's. I thought it was basically just a diff in features from the 2, That they sounded pretty much identical. The spring on mine sounds as good as the real thing I've had on different amps. I just prefer plate. And I really like it not being affected by vibration. Used to hate it when the amp got bumped. When in a band mix who in the audience can tell.
In a band mix the TC reverb sounds just as good as spring, plus you have other types, I personally use plate cause it sounds a bit less muddy than spring. When playing with drums, bass, n another guitarist that's a plus. Best of all it's not affected by stage vibrations. Had a gig where our other guitarist using a vibro-king had to turn his reverb off cause vibration was making it just howl, so reverb in a box vs no reverb. The TC flashback also works really good and at 120 bucks yea. Also the timelines are about 450, not 800, but that's still hefty for a pedal. I'm not at the same stage budget as Mr. Ford. Still good as it may be, don't understand the zen-drive when he has the real thing, and the OD channel seems to have more than enough OD. The zen-drive still sounds like a drive pedal. The only one I've heard that has the openness of a tube is the TC dark matter, n I've compared it to many, many, many etc. drive pedals. I have a Dude overdrive and A-B'd good as the Dude is it get's that slightly compressed solid state sound compared to the TC. Tho I don't use either , just the 2 channels on my amp, Which is or was a Jet City. When I decided it was too much I got out the Dumble schematic and the Soldano schematic and went to work, at totally revoiced and without cutting up circuit board. Took out lots of gain and lots of compression. For the first time I've gotten compliments on my tone, and from the girl who does our sound.
@@JP-pj7mt I guess I should mention that I use only slight reverb. All the guitar stuff I hear on u tube to me is waaaay oversaturated. I use mine like Ford does but to a lesser degree. I have a slight 1 repeat delay, very fast after then just a dash of reverb. I was checking and there seems to be a lot of dislike for the TC stuff. But the diff between the 1 & 2 does seem to be mostly features (which I don't need). In the house on my practice amp I got a used dod digiverb and it seems very similar. I picked up a tc surf something? to throw in my bag as a backup and it's waaaay to wet for my taste. I have trouble dialing it low enough. I also have but don't use anymore ( only use the two channels on my amp) a TC dark matter which is the most open, dynamic, tubelike overdrive I've ever had. It must be from ramping the pedal voltage up inside it.
Interesting about how he’s lost ability to play “fast”. I’ve wondered about how his playing style has changed so much over the years. I remember seeing him in the early and mid 80s and he played very loud with an overdrive sound and had monster chops…very thrilling to watch and hear
He also said that the use of overdrive allowed him to play faster and he said he’s using it less so basically can’t crutch on OD to play faster. The POG gives a similar smooth and liquid feel like OD or distortion would have
Thanks for the tour Robben! (ua-cam.com/video/yL6V-XPZOUM/v-deo.html) Like so any others, I've been following you for years and years, watched lots of your lessons to help progress, and I'm still awed by your expansive pallet of style. I have a question for you to consider-- Since you're not using your Dumble in the manner Howard intended it to be used, how about swapping with me? Wouldn't you like a great sounding Tweed Fender with Deep reverb and trem all in one (you'd gain some pedalboard space as well right? Deal? 🤣😂🤣 Seriously though thank you so much for all you've done to inspire players and sharing the ins and outs with such a wide range of musicians over the span of your career!! Peace My Brother...

"Try to use your ears, not your eyes, for sound" what an awesome quote by Robben.
I love robben
Robben has taken good care of himself and we are all beneficiaries of that. Think of how long he’s played. He’s as good as ever, better in my opinion.

Nice to see the Little Walter amps Robin is using now. Phil Bradbury makes a great amp

I run 2 pedals in common with Robben. Sadly, one of them is a tuner. Lol
What type amp is he using? We get a quick peek at 2:13, i froze clear, it but I cannot read it. Can anybody tell what amp that is?

In his official FB page...
Robben you were overcharged for the timeline pedal .In the UK you can get them for around £429 .
He said he bought 2. Listen again.
He doesn't need a lot of pedals, because it's all in his hands.
Long delay is still pretty short.

So true, I studied with him in the mid 80's at GIT. He rocked!
I think he could play as fast as he wanted but went with more musicality.
I would prefer to know, why he is using a Little Walter Amp and not his Dumble.
Perhaps having to do with more recent preference for clean tones?
