Fun fact: most non-citizens (legal residents, but also through sales and other taxes many illegals) also pay taxes. And many citizens don't.
But the Constitution is quite clear that payment of taxes is not a requirement for the rights it guarantees to everyone living here.
If it were, most corporations would not be so quick to look for off-shore tax havens.

Americans constantly resent being judged as stereotypes by foreigners. Yet we have no trouble stereotyping every single foreigner ourselves and telling the world what they 'should' be doing.
Jim Jefferies is a great thinker, giving us a perspective from the outside world about so many ridiculous things we're doing. Maybe we should listen. Even if you don't agree with him, at least listen.
They want to make sure people are paying taxes for school, roads, etc but call rich people smart for using loopholes in the tax law to pay little or no taxes. Which one is it? Does everyone need to put in their fair share? Or are you smart for legally tax dodge? Asking for a friend.

Last census I did was about 5 years ago. I got to the nationality question and that's where I stopped. It asked if I was Mexican. I thought, "why is that important"? I am not, I am white, but I circled the question and wrote FUCK YOU in BIG black sharpie and sent it in.

Why is it racist to ask if someone's a citizen on a census?
Stanzavik: we already have plenty of ways to know how many non-citizens are here (within tolerances--that is, more or less). We don't NEED that question on the census, and it might make people refuse to answer it at all, which would seriously undercount some parts of the country. The idea is, the census has a specific purpose and point, why unilaterally screw around with it?

I'm not American, but I dislike Trump and the global implications of his policies scare me... That aside... I kinda feel "Are you a U.S citizen?" Is a fair, non-racist question... Yes it invites illegal immigrants to incriminate themselves... But from the perspective of a sovereign state I don't see how it's racist or wrong... My own country (Nigeria) is experiencing waves of violence brought on by immigrants from when Ghadaffis Libya collapsed... I don't hate em... They are also victims of circumstance and other peoples foreign policy... Well, it doesn't look racist on its face - what's racist is rather why the quesiton is being asked and what will be done with that information. The thing is, putting this question on there means that fewer nonwhite non-citizens are going to be responding to the census - because, frankly, telling this racist-as-fuck administration that you're an immigrant is just asking for trouble. Look at who the Turnip chose as his first pardon.
Normally it wouldn't be racist, but the US has a history of taking every possible measure to disadvantage people of color. If our government, especially our current government, wasn't so keen on that, I'd probably say its fine. Unfortunately, we've had trouble with it in the past: the 3/5ths clause, what Jeffries said about internment camps, and all sorts of other things.
Also, the census has to count everyone living in the country. ICE will use census data to deport people, so some people living here may not answer (legal or not, ICE has a bad history). This undermines the purpose of the census. In short, the specific circumstances in the USA make this question sketchy, and we've done just fine without it for over 60 years. Racism in America is a very finicky thing.
For those who haven't figured it out yet, this is a political ploy by Trump. He knows that most people aren't going to say they aren't citizens on the Census so then he will be able to take the low numbers non-citizens and say "See, illegal immigration is at an all-time low under my presidency!!!" That's the type of dishonest shit Donald Trump does....

Optikor the only difference is how they use it in other countries as compared to how they will use that information here. You all have different history than we do also, maybe not to far off but if we are number one in anything it is racism. Throughout history it we have dominated through religious wars, land grabs and wars for oil and other resources, and it has always been. When it looks like anybody is getting more than us, or even might end up having more than us we demonize them with propaganda, mock their culture and point out all that is different. This is just another way to do that, they will cut funding to the areas that have the highest non citizens and the whole city, county ect will feel the effects. Then who does the blame fall on? They know we will blame the immigrants and not the government, they know we vote against our combined better interests when they keep us fighting and that's why this is racist. Asking your citizenship isn't racist. Its simple. The census is used to determine the amount of money that goes to an area for the amount of citizens the locality has. Localities should not receive more money because they have illegal immigrants there.

I received the 2015 ACS American Community Survey put out by the U.S. Census Bureau and it asked the citizenship question... I refused to answer it then.. I answered every other question, but because it said I had to fill out every question or face being fined.. I said fuck it ALL...

I did the census in 2000...they asked if you were a legal citizen I believe somewhere. One of the Mexicans asked my Crew Leader, when showing him his check, how to get the money back from taxes since he's not a citizen. He told him that wouldn't be a good idea. But you can always lie, which many probably did or didn't do. Which is why the people go door to door. It's only houses in question that are known.

The census hasn’t been counting for US citizens since the 50s. It’s to measure overall population for redistricting(gerrymandering).
