Yes, but all of them are feasible and might cover all of the energy needs even on calm, cloudy, trashless days at sea. I suspect it might be manned as well given the size of it.

20 years ago, this was one of my dreams and finally others are following suite and making dreams come true. Hopefully I will help build their electronics. It does anger me that we have to babysit the human population and clear mess, but even infants learn eventually. Lets build a bigger creche.... Well done Seacleaners, I am so proud ;)

I used to dream of ideas and solutions like this years ago until I understood the laws of thermodynamics and that infinite growth on a finite planet was never possible.

Im a big fan of all these ocean cleanup projects. Having seen beach and oceans around the world absolutely ruined by garbage I think its important. I would like to see more projects aiming at stopping the polluting happening altogether that will be the bigger challenge. Educating and motivating people in the poorest places on earth to understand, care and not pollute.
its not necessarily the poorest places that are the problem, it's the billion dollar corporations and rich countries dumping all their rubbish on the poorest pretending like they made the right decisions, the poor countries need help to dispose of this revolting waste in the best ecological ways. Plastic should be banned all together.
I agree with the comments here suggesting that when the initiation of this plan has been finalized and scheduled, that it should be broadcast on live television 📺. The anticipation and excitement of this would attract commercial sponsors. I see is it as a monumental event for the environmentalist movement and the global community.

Yep, the vast majority of plastics in the ocean are from the fishing industry.

This is fantastic and more need building.
Every country should be responsible for there own waste, if all new housing estates had to be as sustainable as possible then maybe they should have a plastic recycle place which like the manta makes energy from it , and should reduce the amount pollution and reduce there household bills?
Looks fantastic. And very inspiring. As an ocean lover and seafarer captain, I wouldn't mind being part of the purpose and help navigate this vessel on a mission. I hope there will be more than one to come. Is it already being built or are they waiting for more funds to have this project come to life?

Also "floating metal debris"....I am not so sure about how often that will be a thing.
Also the gnarly gasses created when burning random plastics is going to be insanely toxic. How is that handled?
1) Such hydro generators already exist on recreational sailboats and they work on the same principle as tidal turbines. As the Manta is a larger sailboat, medium power range tidal turbines can be adapted for electricity production.
2) Scientific papers listing the different types of garbage found in floating garbage slicks have shown that large quantities of metal beverage cans and metal cans were present.
3) Plastics are not directly burnt. They are converted into syngas by the pyrolysis reactor and most of the pollutants are captured in the solid residues (char) mainly constituted of carbon. This permits to reduce CO2 emissions and to bring the char back to the shore to be properly treated. As for the combustor exhaust gases, they are treated in a special unit to comply with EU and international emissions standards.
@@TheSeaCleaners Those EU and international emissions standards very low are not good for the environment. I use to work for Disney Cruiseline and you should see the toxic diesel we burned at night. All under regulatory limits.

I think we all can agree this is at least....a step in the right direction? the plastic pollution is being ingested by marine life, and further ingested by humans and other animals. and the world wonders why cancer is reaching extreme highs? with the advancing technologies, hopefully soon we will find a safe and clean chemical process to be able to reuse the waste products of plastic. plastic is such a horribly awesome invention :-(
@@TheSeaCleaners Thank you for doing the research and knowing the tech! I wish every home was equipped with waste to energy conversion methods. I had an idea for a home unit handing all household waste in the appropriate manner and converting the solids into usable biomass.

Seems like the collection would be more efficient using the small boats to set a shallow purse seine.
Might be simpler to burn the plastic to turn a turbine and scrub the exhaust.
This ship could stay on the garbage patch indefinitely. Rotate the crew and resupply.
Pandora's box was made of plastic.

Great project, maybe even better if scaled up to be more automated and industrial ships, but the long lived plastic bags problem needs to be tackled other ways, as the resulting microplastic pollution from bags may be more important for the sea food chain
That looks nice but I see issues with this approach:
1) only 1% of plastic in the ocean floats this way
2) It does not do anything about microplastics, which is itself a separate scary problem
3) it requires people on board, which adds crew's salary to year's operation cost.
4) maintenance costs of all those extra mechanisms are unknown
So this more like an entertainment project.
The most recent studies shows that: 15% of the total amount of waste that goes into the ocean is floating. And, in some areas, 90 to 100% of floating waste is plastic. 15% of the waste remains in the water column & 70% ends up sinking after a few weeks to a few months. Collecting this waste in the estuaries of the rivers that carry the most waste and near the coasts, before the waste sinks and disperses, makes sense.
Only 3 operators are needed for waste sorting and storage. Waste treatment organisation was designed to be energetically efficient, robust & adaptable to the highly variable composition of the collected waste and to minimized both the investment and operating costs.

According to the video, this Manta ship will collect waste that floats 1 meter deep.
So this project actually "attacks" only visible waste which is 1% of the plastic pollution problem but looks flashy like a 99% solution.
If this thing gets built and does one successful trip, I will donate $100. There's too many CGI marketing promos out there that never come into existence
I worked my entire adult life in Electrical Power Generating Facilities & Power Distribution Stations. If this Pyrolysis Process, basically converting plastic chips into synthetic gas (fumes) worked as claimed here, the synthetic gas would either have to be compressed to create pressure, or ignited to boil water creating enough steam pressure to spin a turbine. If, and that a mighty big IF, it worked... simply install this system at every landfill & plastic recycle plant to fuel Electrical Generators BEFORE the plastic waste ever reaches the oceans in the first place.

i dont know it looks to me like the 2 sails will make the solarpanels almost useless because of the shadow they will create also the windmill/sail combination will not work out in reality because of the same reason u can only use one not both but maybe im wrong

Take a decommissioned aircraft carrier and convert it to a cleanup and processing factory to turn all the waste into sustainable products. That would be a start! Cheers from Australia.
If you were to integrate this with a luxury yacht that could take large groups of say 20-30 people you could easily charge people to go on eco cruises and pay for it with profits. There would be no end of eco tourists that would love to take a cruise on that kind of ship for a week or two. Spend half the time cleaning the water and half the time in some tropical area and boom profits and cleaner waters.

the problem is, that the garbage patch doesnt look like your simulation.
you'll find 10-100kg plastic per km²...
that means - your energy-source isn't just there.
further, if you use the nets shown in the video, the bycatch is extraordinary.
you will kill more sealife than the plastic itself

Why do you need to sort out glass and metals, these will sink and are inert, not sure the add is a genuine attempt at addressing the problem or a pie in the sky engineering project demo.
People offering solutions to a problem-how nice. Metal (cans) and glass (bottles) are buoyant, and are part of water garbage slicks as per the literature on the subject.
is this a working ship or still just a concept? this film is over 18 months old, I know there have been problems with covid but is it in working order now? we simply cant wait any longer x

We have already built the small river boats for cleaning the rivers of any floating waste.
The plastic is spread over a huge area and the Manta's inlet is tiny.

How much are these going to cost? I lived on a an Island in Ha Long Bay in Vietnam! I would dream to have one of these and spend the rest of my days cleaning the bay.
One caveat to this project would be the recovered pollutants from the waste-energy process. Are there any management plans or strategies in place for dealing with this waste material or even potential reuse for these pollutants/chemicals?
Don't forget to start at the everyday level, consume less plastic :-)

The Pacific Ocean alone is larger then all land mass on Earth. This should do the job, or at least create some fun jobs for the “inventor” and his friends. Anyway, nice presentation, hopefully you learned something that will help you present a real business idea one day.

This group is taking action and claims to have a boat by 2024-I wish them success in their endeavor and hope others follow their lead. So, I'd say more than a concept at this point. A panel or two on your boats to power your beer fridge as you putt around the lake is a far cry from what this vessel proposes. Despite my "young" life, I had panels on my home within 6 months of home ownership and a rain water harvesting system within 1 year. The "young" generations are forced to do anything possible to mitigate environmental abuse and neglect from previous generations, you hear me, geriatric? :b #world #climate change, yeah it's a thing #water pollution #net loss of 3 billion birds within the past 50 years in North America (2019 study)

Even if he had 340 of those ships to collect 1020 tons per hour for 365 days per Year,
that would be just enough capacity to catch the new waste. But there are already millions (billions) of tons of old waste swimmin' in the seas.
And the real sad part about it: according to a study, there is estimated 20x more plastic waste in the ground than in the seas.
Time to face the truth: we messed it up!

Thank you for showing what a joke this idea is. Luckily the islands of plastic is another fake scare tactic to make us give up our freedoms under the UN Agenda 21 plan. I would encourage anyone who doesn’t agree to watch some sailing channels on YT and see the beautiful clean oceans of the world.
A feat of engineering! If 17 tons of plastic are put into the oceans every MINUTE though, wouldn't it be more efficient to find ways to reduce that number instead, or in addition to?

No joke, I came up with a similar design about a year ago after learning about the pacific ocean garbage patch. The large catamaran is a great design. Hope this solution helps.
As soon as I hear “manually sorted” I foresee problems. Manual sorting is all ready a huge issue with recycling an if you’ve seen the amazing diversity of our filth, well. I just hope it can somehow turn most everything into fuel. How I don’t know but here’s hoping smarter people prevail.
