    Been out of action for a few years and I just ran thru the last 10 years DMC winners and for me this was the absolute best. Well done what an incredible talent.

    I find it the most paradoxical and hypocritical thing that scratching enthusiasts can be technofobes. You would think that someone who's artform was so strongly rejected by the rest of the music community in it's early days, would be a little more accepting of technological progress and innovation. "Technology destroyed the DJ"? Ya, well it also created it. Young people wanting to diverge from traditional trends, growing old, and then fearing further progress... it is such a predictable pattern by now. This guy did not use technology as a crutch instead of a tool to elevate the art form, his performance was sick!!

    • @djfobtronics
      @djfobtronics 10 років тому +7

      It's not the technology, it's the fact that most of this routine is pre-recorded and "chase juggled" all the way through. Basically it's a push play routine with some scratches thrown in.

      Just look at the dmc 2001 performances in comparison to this. Using the technology to elevate the art is by making the turntables into musical instruments that create a new song. This guy just played over different songs.

      I agree and disagree. His set was set wasn’t the best. But I love technology and I’m sick of ‘old heads’ who are so stubborn. I saw two friends rocking serato One cutting up beats and the other cuttting vocals and changing things up on the fly. Woooooow! I was sold.

    • @neutra__l8525
      @neutra__l8525 3 роки тому

      Yeah agreed. The tech created it and will redefine it. People like certain skill sets it seems and dont like it when others get a great performance with a little less difficulty (at times). Embrace the change or keep watching nostalgic Craze routines. Both are great options, just enjoy the talent. And my own 2 cents is that Dj Dexta 2000, was trying to achieve modern routines but way ahead of his time. IMHO his sets are amazing, but yeah, thats my preference, nothing more..

    Anyone out there kind of misses the old DMC'ing days? The pre-Serato days when you would actually have to flip / change the records? Back when you had to mark your cue on your records with white tape because you didn't have a computer screen to read ?
    Don't get me wrong.. This video made my jaw drop...
    I'm just saying... I miss the old days !

    • @DBooey
      @DBooey 8 років тому

      I reminisced again.. Don't get me wrong, I think Serato is a great product. Definitely opens up new possibilities that weren't that accessible back in the old days like being able to play a custom track you just made or whatever. That was still an option back in the days, but it would cost you an arm and a leg to cut an acetate record. What Serato has done is do away with the need to go record shopping.. Flipping through crates of records, making a pile, and go listen to them all at the listening booth.. It was expensive as fuck, but I miss that experience... It's a shame this generation of DJs won't get to experience that..
      Also! What Serato has also gotten rid of that I miss is the term "rare track".. Remember how back in the days, a rare track was still a thing? You'd have a copy of a sick track that is rare, so barely anyone else has it... And you almost become known as "That DJ who plays that dope track". You can find anything on the net now a days so nothing is rare.
      **sigh**

    • @ScruffZ31

      @@DBooey don't worry buddy, rare tracks still exist.
      They're just more rare.

      @@DBooey That is a good point, the rare track one, it gave DJ's a signature sound of sorts, no more IMO than Dexta 2000. And of course crate digging, sniff. What a joy to go digging with mates or alone. Tech created the DJ and tech will redefine the art. As long as we dont get Kim Kardashian winning off of a complete pre-recorded set. lol. Or would that be funny enough to be hilarious.. I honestly dont know. :)

    Dj fly, this very same guy, won the 2008 world final as well...on vinyl only...
    everyone complaining about laptops and tech seems to be forgetting they could just watch the DMC SUPREMACY BATTLES, which are vinyl only, and leave the rest of us alone to enjoy this performance...
    whether you didn't like the music choice or his approach or whatever your qualm maybe, you are free to never watch the showcase battle again and tune in solely to the supremacy battles for your love of vinyl only nostalgia...

    I own a Rane 62.. I use Serato for every set I do… I love Serato…That being said
    I am not down with allowing Serato in the DMC Championships…
    Where are the stickers all over the records? Where is the panic and rush to swap out records to get to the next track? The fear of a misplaced or jumping needle?
    Watching the older Champions, they look like surgeons..laser focused
    This dude looks more like he is playing at a club… Lip Syncing to the tracks, trying to hype the crowed…and not showing much skill.. at least the last DJ Izoh and Vajra used the computer aid to show even more skills on the tables….
    ….2013 must have been a slow year...

      I just looked at the rules for DMC now with digital vinyl :
      "There will be no restrictions on the DVS settings but no other devices/externals will be allowed for 2011. "
      That means the vinyls can be set up to run relative…
      correct me if i am wrong here… but to me that feels like you are not only pissing in the face of all the champions prior.. but shitting in their cereal as well..
      I am not saying it doesn't take skill to be good using DVS, on the contrary, its just a different beast…DVS should have its place in DMC since digital is the current way of doing things, BUT I just feel DMC should split the "finals" into 2 categories, digital and analog… but instead of analog call it "classic"… and i would be more than content with the "new" DMC

  • @Yourveryowncarrot

    For you guys saying that he has limited skill and that digital dj's lack creativity. Did you see this guys scratching? Regardless of the whole midi thing, this was incredible. Great skill and creativity (James Bond theme kicked ass) I'm not the only one who thinks this, obviously the judges agreed to.

    • @xpress9349
      @xpress9349 10 років тому

      The Judges in the DMC are not DJs. One DJ and the rest are not DJs. That is why Craze won and not Akakabe back in the day. DJ Cash Money put him first place. Only DJs can judge the technical stuff. The average judge will like more what is musical rather than technical.

    Modern technology is good, but DMC contest should just stick to 2 turntables and a mixer, this is like cheating not having to manually take the records off and finding the cue points yourself...letting the laptop do half the work doesn't seem right.

    Such a great set! It's unfortunate for anyone who doesn't understand how amazing this really is. The old school battles were dope too, but things have changed. Technology is a double edge sword and it can help or hurt a dj. However, in this case I think DJ Fly is extremely talented and has used technology to amplify his skills... Just my opinion. But I am a dj that has paid my dues and have been in the USA finals twice.

BUT, you can NOT say that dude right here does not have a HUGE talent! His skills are very accurate and tight, no doubt!

Im grateful that my role models are the guys that started on vinyls and i want to be able to rock on vinyls BUT we must keep up with the tehnology. Dj-s like Fly are smart and they know what they need to do to go big, but still i bet he knows how to rock the vinyls the old school way with the stop watch bpm counting and everything ;)

    So you can just pre-build your set on to a recording, putting together all the elements from all the different places, setting it all up before hand? Then just scratch the record as the prebuilt set plays on?
    I thought part of the excitement of these things was watching the DJs pull out the individual records with their respective samples, beats, vocals and tracks and combining all of these elements live in front of your eyes! None of that is anything the DJs have to do anymore? It's all stripped down to simply how fast you can move the record back-and-forth under the needle, and how fast you can flick the crossfader? That got boring after the first 30 seconds. It was some beat juggling that wasn't very tight, and scratching that wasn't terribly tight either.
    You would think he would be better at that considering the fact that half of the skills seen in alder battles are no longer; ie working with a stack of records representing each element of your sets, marking records and working through it all.
    Hrmph.

    • @Jon1st
      @Jon1st 10 років тому +6

      Physically changing records takes next to no skill and is a minute part of old DMC sets... DJs are still performing transitions with DVS. This is a turntablism competition, not a 'how good you are at putting a record on a turntable and pressing play' contest....

    • @MagnumDB
      @MagnumDB 10 років тому +2

      djjon1st Well it kind of does. You have to be quick with the record changes and you have to be quick with the needle placement and you have to have a better hands when it comes to scratching because if the needle skips on a real record you're fucked - with Serato you can set it to skip protect - no matter where the need may jump, the recorded sample will start where you left off. It's a HUGE aid.
      You say it's a turntable competition - EXACTLY! So he should be using turntables in all the ways possible. Instead, the music is prerecorded and progresses on without him lifting a finger - literally and just scratches. That's it.
      I'm all for technology helping to push what we can do but in what I see here, it's actually taking away and I don't like it.

    • @Jon1st
      @Jon1st 10 років тому +5

      MagnumDB
      there's similar hazards in DVS, even if traditional skipping is no longer an issue. If your needle jumps, your cue marker on your records are no longer matched with the audio, so the markers are rendered useless, which can completely throw a DJ off- you have to recue and start from beginning again, whereas on vinyl you can recover much easier if the needle jumps.
      'turntable' and 'turntablism' are two different things.
      as someone that has won a world dmc title I can assure you that the hard work and talent lies in the content of routines (juggle/scratch/drumming etc patterns) and things like cueing from stickers and skipping (from heavy hands) cease to be difficult after a few months of practice.

    I've been a dj and hip hop fan for 14 years. This is awesome! Serato is the future and allows dj's to progress the art higher and higher........no limitis!!
    If dj's don't embrace new ideas and technologies then the art form will become stagnant and die. If dj's had dismissed the scratch when G.W Theodore invented it, where would we be today? I do understand why a lot of the comments are dissing DVS but having used Serato myself it completely opens up what is possible and although it may look easy to the uneducated..... it certainly is not.
    If pioneers like Qbert, Mixmaster Mike, Jazzy Jeff, Africa Bambata etc....... are using it, what are you moaning about??

    In terms of convenience, Serato is great. BUT, for me a good dj HAS TO HAVE that turntable and vinyl experience under his belt. Like Grandmaster Flash said at one point: "You have to earn to use Serato". Lots of kids today just buy a controller or mommy buys them a pair of cdj's and a year later they are on youtube calling themselves DJ's because they came up with a little 3 min routine. Really??? So what the fuck am I? I started in '85 learning how to mix with a cassette deck and a old ass turntable, then two different brand turntables with no pitch, then started doing odd jobs and summer jobs to finally save the money to buy a pair of 1200's and and a Numark mixer then started buying records, also spending money on dj pools...etc. Learned the art of studying those 12" single records like the palm of my hand. Intros, breakdowns, acapellas, percapellas, dub versions, instrumentals, edits, even the cover art of the records was special to me. Years later I became a respected local club DJ and my record collection was in the thousands. I was a really good DJ and I LOVED mixing live. Having that connection from the booth to the crowd was something special. Back then people actually danced, unlike most clubs today where the crowd is either having sex on the dance floor or just jumping like idiots. Then after watching my first DMC battle I got into Turntableism and I was decent, but the scratch dj movement in Puerto Rico was not like in the usa and overseas so I never competed. Anyways my point is...when I see DJ Jazzy Jef using Serato, he earned it. I don't mind seeing him with a laptop and a pair of timecoded vinyls or cd's. The same goes for Flash, Dj Premier, Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry, Kid Capri....and many other Dance music and Hiphop DJ's. Everybody is entitled to mix music and call themselves what they want but enough with the bullshit.

      Jose Silva me personally I think that a "good dj" just needs to be "GOOD" to be a "good dj" i listen withmy ears not my eyes so i wont be able to start judging by brand or color scheme if what i hear is dope then hey its dope period if its wack then its wack there are so many wack djs . I bet cavemen would be pissed and bitter seeing a dude paint a train with aerosol in hours wen it would take the cavemen much longer lol

      jeremy powell your ears? what a joke. so a "dj" shows up to a club with his controller and laptop, loads up his "dj" software, hits the SYNC button, starts blending tracks, doing "effects" also in SYNC mode....of course he's going to sound "good". So now he's a dj? you don''t know what you're talking about. Go home and listen to skrillex son

I make music for ears.".....Adele. honestly if you are just letting software do all the work I would rather just have this app be the dj www.secretdj.com/

      +Jose Silva lots of kids today buy controllers because its what they were borned to and theres no problem with that. They have been seeing cdjs and controllers. You were borned in years where they used vynils. Thats why lots of kids buy controllers apart from many other reasons which i'm not going to say because they are so obvious.

    Times are changing and this is the result. This guy is bringing the new styles and application of new technologies to the next level. Today no one goes around with tons of records but anyone goes with a laptop. So whats the problem? If you put a Mac between u and the music, you have to be honest and say "...ok !what can I do now to make my best with this?"...and this is the result. Fly, at the moment, is the best combination between technical skills and music production ability.

    If the real vinyl is dead, DMC too. There is no sense to keep it doing this championship if anyone can do anything with a vinyl controller. Thats not a talent, its a pre-session of turntablism without any merit.

      Antes la gracia era buscarte tus vinilos, tener tu set bien preparado, con la colocación de las pegatinas, había mucha más innovación. Ahora sólo se trata de hacerte una mezcla con tus vinilos de control y como ya está todo en su sitio, el esfuerzo es mínimo. Se de lo que hablo porque llevo 8 años como Dj y he vito todos los campeonatos de la DMC entre muchísimos más de ámbito nacional de varios países, y la verdad desde que están los vinilos de control esto no es competición ni nada.

    • @artao5
      @artao5 10 років тому +5

      ... people used to say turntablism was "just playing records" too ... and now purists are saying the same thing about their brethren?
      shameful and laughably ironic
      using a vinyl controller, you STILL have to be able to manipulate the turntable, the mixer, and the vinyl itself .. you just don't have to collect crates of records anymore, or change records while playing

    • @ElkinMarenco

      Arukeru Mugen Zero
      Desde antes de Serato y Traktor los Dj preparaban sus propios vinilos, no era tan fácil como hacerlo ahora digitalmente, pero todos tenian sus vinilos hechos al medida. Las marcas (cue) en los equipos digitales es lo mismo que las pegatinas en los vinilos.
      Los mejores Qbert, Craze, Mix Master Mike, Jazzy Jeff, Angelo usan Serato y/o traktor por las facilidades que ofrecen, pero el software no hace nada por ti, el talento no viene con el software.

      why you make the haters in this video , when netik won in 2006 it's pressed vinyle and if you want it's a pre session also
      he can pressed real vinyle with the same bank sound and he can make the same routine , you are not a turntablist you can't understund
