I was a bartender in a niteclub when Sandstorm came out. That track was so huge. I remember at the time, the Nokia 3210 had come out and it allowed you to create your own ringtones by manually typing in the notes in the little ringtone editor. Literally everyone I worked with in that niteclub had their ringtone set to Sandstorm. 1997 - 2002 was the peak of dance music for me. So many bangers came out during that era.
So many bangers during that era. Amazing that 20 years since, maybe some of the Kendrick-led rap has been the only thing close where for 3-5 years or so, it was just hit after hit after hit from so many people that it really evolved the genre.

Like everyone, Sandstorm turned my ear to Darude, then Feel the Beat made me stand up and listen. But if I was to pick favourite Darude tracks, it would be anything from the Rush album. That and Label This! Showed the depth of emotion that Darude could put into his songs.
I've been a fan of Darude for years and owned the first album he released when it came out in 2000. Sandstorm is a legendary song and I've been fortunate enough to listen to/watch Darude when he's come to Dallas, TX (I live in the DFW area). Probably my favorite DJ and in my top 10 favorite songs of all time.
I’ve always heard that “Yamaha RM1x groovebox was used by Darude” and indeed it does show up in the old clips of him here. My first real hardware back in 2003
It's fascinating to hear the story behind the creation of "Sandstorm." It's incredible how one song can have such a lasting impact on popular culture. Thanks for sharing.
I remember moving from the UK in 2003 (where dance music had been commercial and publically acceptable for more than a decade) to the USA (where it was still looked down upon and basically unheard of in the mid-west, they still called everything 'techno' and avoided it like the plague)...but during 2006 I remember going to a baseball game and suddenly it was 'okay' to play snippits of both Zombie Nation and Sandstorm...and the crowd would be sat clapping and do doo dooing to it, like it was their only exposure to dance music. Then you'd walk back out of the stadium and people would be in their cars listening to country, rap and rock again. I just found it really bizzare.
It really is truly bizarre how some parties (political and religious) like to fight music of a certain types for decades. There's always some form of music to demonize for some absurd reason. Metal still takes the cake for being "bad" for the dumbest reasons and yet, the communities around it are the chillest mf around. Never any issues at metal festivals or gigs. It's always the local bar/festival with shitty pop playing and people drunk out of their mind that has the issues with violence or all sorts etc.

As soon as i heard this track back in late 1999 as i was driving, i took to it & i still play this amazing dance track to this day EVEN “FEEL THE BEAT” as well… Amazing from Finland
Thank you for the great interview, and the great memories, Sandstorm was an ICON since the first time I heard and played it in a party, and many many years later, it still lights up the dancefloor!
The track that INTRODUCED me to trance/EDM music!! This man is a legend! Almost 25 years later and EVERYONE knows what this song is as soon as the intro kicks in. Crazy to hear Judge Jules' name again, remember seeing him at Monster Massive back in the 2009!
Ville is a great guy and he encouraged me to explore music in a different way. My personal interactions with him also made me realize how down to earth you can still be even after global fame.
Canadian checking in... love the throw backs to the old MuchMusic Electric Circus appearance, so many memories unlocked there alone.
If there's anything I'm grateful for outside of my family it's that I grew up in the 90's
Still playing "Sandstorm" loud and proud . Thank you for recording this memorable song.
This song is one of the songs that I would describe as one of the soundtracks of my youth. When I first hit the clubs this was one of the main tunes that kept coming back. I will always have good memories when I hear this track :)
I was 16 when Sandstorm was released. There was so much good music being released back then it kinda went under my radar.Few months later I was responsible for playing music at my school and this track was requested like every couple minutes. It was absolutely a star of the show.
Love the detailed description of how the track was made! The most electronic sounding track of all time, legendary
Love this guy and this track. Realized the other day he has a Twitch stream. So cool to watch him.
This tune is so good even my 78 year old mum wants this at her funeral.
Amazing 🤣
Sandstorm was the song of the year for my 8th grade. Everyone even those who hated tech and trance grooved to that iconic track
Unironically dropped this tune 2 weeks ago at a festival. Crowd went crazy. 😂
Well, mostly unironically. 😁
This has to be the most played song worldwide of all time. You hear it in commercials, movies, any dance party, all races and religions. The classic of all classics! And I got to roll my brain off to it back in the day. What a treat!
Pretty sure the Amish don't listen to electronic music, so you can't say _all_ religions.
I still remember hearing this at the Masterdome in Pomona California in early 1999. It was before it was released commercially, and everyone went nuts for it. Good raver times at that place. RIP Masterdome. Big up Darude for this tune!
Masterdome was in San Bernardino! I remember you! Good times ❤
Hell yeah me too! and 9PM Till I Come by ATB was another banger that everyone blasted at the Masterdom parking lot lol
@ best of times uh?
@@eduardoiniestra8007DJ August 77 is better 🎉🎉
Still Love this song!! Hearing it in the club, dancing Alllll night long and Playing it in my car. 😊🙌🏿👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽🔥😍💚💜
This series is so important to the culture without this we wouldn’t really know the way Ty this is soooo epic and it really shows the way and the moves to make at the right time
I miss the 90’s sooooooo MUCH! Best time of my LIFE!.
Me too.
What a decent guy. That synth riff stood out amongst a lot of similar-sounding tracks of the time. I remember hearing it on Radio One, and it was one of those tracks which I couldn’t wait for the release date, so that I could go to buy the CD Single.
The excitement over getting new CD back then was unmatched
@@AugustinOlivaresTell me about it. Every Saturday morning I would go into town to spend £10 - £15 a week on the new releases. There was 3 record shops on my town and I went around them all deciding what to buy. I miss those times so much.
one of the rare examples of a timeless song that's spanned generations and still has a remarkable impact on its first-time listeners. very well done video, too. let the artist speak and loved the cutscenes
What a history of gold!
I still remember hearing this for the first time and all the times after. Good memories. Introduced my kids to it all these years later. My son loves dancing to it. Forever Darude Sandstorm!
Don't forget to give them molly so they can really enjoy it.
In 2000, it was spinning in my walkman all day long. (on selfmade mixtape from radio of course)
I remember when it premiered and watching the video on VIVA or MTV, and thinking how freaking awesome choon that is. It was what got me to love electronic music, and Trance in particular. Thank you Mr. Darude, I hope you are doing well, and I hope you know that shitton of people still love "Sandstorm" unironically, for the banger it is
Amazing history , thanks for sharing :)
Our pleasure!
@@DJMag you definitely need to interview JS16 after this
This song blew my mind as a kid and introduced me to Trance. Thank you Darude 🙏

DJ Jurgen!
Thanks for the story! It was so amazing to see him in person in Columbia SC, circa 2023
I;m just glad that this comment section doesn't say Darude Sandstorm a million times.
I didn't get what's the song?
As a 90s kid and metal, nu metal fan growing up heard this song many times and now I can definitely say it's a f...g good song. If song or music is good you just know it and it doesn't matter if you are not a fan of the genre you can still appreciate it
Thank you for this legendary track
You've inspired a whole generation
You are genius and you proved it.
Thank you so much!
My First CD "Before the Storm" i brought with my first computer. What a beautiful feeling.
I've always wondered what this song was called! Now after all these years, I finally know!
Hack joke
Greece, Summer 2000, Mykonos, listening to this song repeatedly. Such great memories!
What a cool dude. Thanks for posting this.
I love that he earnestly calls it “the do do do”
I’ve always heard that “Yamaha RM1x groovebox was used by Darude” and indeed it does show up in the old clips of him here. My first real hardware back in 2003
It was fun to catch an RM1X in the video, I still have one.
@@-ionme too! It’s in a flightcase and hasn’t been used since ca 2007 though
