    I appreciated you encouraging people to bend the barb(s) down. I lost maybe 10 fish in 20 years with barbless or bent barb hooks . Keep tension and the fish won't throw the hook. Fresh and salt ..BEND THE BARB.

    I still think the striper numbers are down in the Northeast, but this season has been better than I expected. More people seem to be getting fish over 28” than in the last two seasons. At least up here in MA/RI.

    Glad that you're touting the benefits of barbless hooks. There are no disadvantages!. Fishing this way for almost 30 years now. One thing that doesn't often get mentioned is that you actually get better penetration when you don't have to drive the barb through flesh or jaw. The round surface penetrates further with same force.

    1. 4k on a 8ft. fluke rod - good? - not too much?
    2. Gill handle is not a stress on fish?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 роки тому +1

      I think 4K is right on an 8-footer. I avoid handling them under the gill plate, but will do so if it's the safest and fastest way to get them back in the water. Grabbing them by the mouth when there's a plug there can easily lead to a hooked hand.

    Hi again, in prior videos you fished with the dentist and another guy with the aluminum boat. Do they keep their boats in greenport and then are able to fish block island and southside of montauk? I am thinking of doing the same in the future and was wondering about the feasibility of traveling to those spots from there. thanks

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 роки тому

      I fish on three 30-32-ft twin-engine CCs that run from Greenport to Montauk routinely. My personal opinion is you want at least a 25-footer to make that run and go around the point. Radar is very important on at least a third of our trips. Beautiful days in Greenport are often dense fog once you turn the corner at the Montauk Light.

    • @user-dc9bq1nn9n
      @user-dc9bq1nn9n 4 роки тому

      thanks for the reply. I was thinking of a single engine lobster boat that does 14-16 knots. I looked up the charts, its about 40 miles to the area south of block island. Sounds like I will need to leave at 4am or think of getting something with more speed?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 роки тому

      It's 33 miles from Greenport to Cartright and around 38 to the Block Island grounds. It will take you awhile, but you'll have lots of fishing room and a comfortable ride.

    • @user-dc9bq1nn9n
      @user-dc9bq1nn9n 4 роки тому

      thanks for the reply. I like the idea of sailing out of greenport, because I have the option of fishing in the bay or sound depending on the wind conditions.It looks like there are a lot of places to hide out of the October winds and still catch fish. My wife and I are currently looking for a home out east, its part of my "master plan" to be within 1/2 hour of the sterling harbor area.

Pretty much haven't surf casted for the past month because it's been so dead. Also partly because I got tired of waking up at 3 am just to get skunked. The season was fairly slow to start, with consistent action only being in late april and early may. Temperatures are up there now- do you think the action is going to continue as is? Or can I get my hopes up for good summer fishing?

    John do you find the Action to be fast enough on the SaltX ?

    Had you sighted the bunker schools and decided to go topwater because of the weather, or were you already fishing and adapting to the changed conditions? Thank you.

      I rarely pass on nasty weather for shore fishing. Bunker were in the area.

    Do you ever try cheaper rods? I'd be curious if there are more economical rods you can recommend

      Absolutely - Tsunami Trophy II rods are great underpriced rods.

    Great video as all yours John, they have helped me tons! If that's ok I would appreciate your advice to help me decide between 2 rods, both Tsunami: the Airwave Elite that was a hit some years ago, and the newer SaltX Surf. I see they have maybe better components - reel seat, guides - in the SaltX, maybe the blank is different (better?) too. I haven't found any website that compare them side by side son don't really know real differences. I see the price is about $80-100 for comparable models. Something I don't like is that in some websites they describe the features, they mention the rod weigth for the Airwave Elite but not for the SaltX, and you know weigth is important when you are casting for a long time. If we ignore the price difference, do you have any advice, any inclination for any of them? I would say blank difference is most imprtant for me... but don't really know how they compare. Thanks for your advice John!

      I like the action on the SaltX better than the airwave, but I also like the action on the Tropht 2 better than the airwave as well.

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank for your answer John, it really helps! All clear about the rod action. I was more inclined towards the SaltX anyway, I think components are more durable for saltwarer.
      A thought that still is hanging in my mind is about the blank strength in terms of durability. I see the trend in most companies is to make rods ligther and ligther which in many cases partially implies thinner rod walls... and don't know until what point they sacrifice strenght, durability. My newest rod - a fly rod - it's a Scott Sector, a very new model, super nice action and ligth on the hand (... and pricy!!!). However, I had to send it back with several cracks around the ferrules. You wouldn't expect that for a rod of that price and supposedly a good company. Hadn't used that rod much, less than a year, few fishing trips, compare with other rods I have had for years. So that's a concern I have now. I want a rod with nice action and ligth weigth... but don't want to be sending it back for repairs each year. I would prefer a bit heavier rod if that makes it more durable. Any thougths/experiences in relation with that for the Airwave Elite vs. SaltX?

    Is their a reason you choose not to fish the salt x reel with it?

      I didn't have time to spool it with the line I wanted. There's a SaltX on it now.

      I didn't have time to spool it with the line I wanted. That SaltX reel is on this rod now and it's an awesome combo.

    One thing I hate the most is laying my rod down on the ground why don’t you use a pvc pipe in the sand ?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 роки тому

      I don't walk around with a sand spike. Also, that ground is firm and no sand is getting in the reel.
