My friend’s face and neck broke out in hives and she turned the colour of a beet in less than two minutes. From INHALING the aroma of chocolate. Her Epi pen did nothing and she ended up being transported by ambulance to the nearby hospital which was, thankfully, also a trauma level hospital. When my husband was alive he'd go to the cigar shop and get a few cigars the were chocolate flavored. Oh it smelled so good and you could even taste it on the outside wrapper. He loved those so much. They were a bit expensive but oh we're they worth it. He didn't get them all the time so it was his little treat to himself.
My severe allergy is mushrooms. When I was little we didn't know and my mom would make green bean casserole with the mushroom soup and I'd get sick everytime but didn't have skin reaction until we went out for pizza once and those mushrooms sent me to the hospital with breathing problems. My sister's is almonds just them no other nut. So when I was learning soapmaking, I made a recipe just using coconut, olive, shea and cocoa butters. I wanted to be able to send my sister soaps. Love the soapy patterns as always!💜🤎

It is true! Lavender and another E-Fragrance Oil would take the fragrance to another level. Some fragrance makes me "sick". I had to use double mask when am ask to make soap with certain fragrance. Any how, I like this fragrance. Thank you for sharing 🤗

I can relate to the allergy portion.. mine are trees, grasses, weeds, cats, dogs and other dogs.. anything with fur really.. plus all sorts of medicine, and ingredients in beauty products! I have a severe coconut allergy which was my inspiration to begin my soapmaking journey. Coconut oil and coconut derivatives are in the majority of commercially made soaps and other beauty products.
@@EllenRuthSoap I found that babassu oil is a decent substitute, but I don't achieve as great of a lather. Still trying to find the perfect blend. It's a fun journey.
I'm glad you're thinking about allergies for your customers. I do think, however, that if you could anticipate everyone's allergies, you wouldn't have much left to work with. I had no allergies as a kid, but when I was 28, I suddenly became severely allergic to tea. My grandmother told me the same thing happened to her mother at about the same age. I don't know what the trigger is, but people can develop serious allergies as adults. One day you're fine, and the next day you're in trouble. I think it's probably enough to label your products carefully. If someone has an allergy, they probably look at labels as a precaution anyway. I don't know about the scent in this soap, but I think this might be the most visually appealing soap I've seen you make. It's just a classy look. Nice work.
These bars are beautiful! I have horrible shellfish allergies.😩 We live on the coast of Virginia and it breaks my heart that I am not able to eat crabs, shrimp, and so much more.😩 Even if something is cooked on the same grill or fried in the same oil, my tongue and lips swell up and here comes the shot and off to the hospital. My heart is with your son in love and daughter in love.💔
This is such a gorgeous soap. Unfortunately I have an allergy to lavender, which is a little sad because I live less than a mile from a lavender farm. Not to mention it is a favorite of soapers I have found. It will be a challenge I think to make and sell my soaps without being able to offer it as a scent.

I have many allergies to fruits as I think I mentioned before on one of your videos. I don’t have an allergy to chocolate BUT I do get severe migraines from chocolate 😢 My mom makes a delicious fudge every Christmas and the last time I had a piece I had the WORST migraine of all my years of migraines which has been since I was 12. On a good note, I can eat white chocolate so not all is lost😂
Beautiful I have a daughter who is allergic to coconut oil. I am going to make a soap with beeswax to replace the coconut oil,with that I have to change the oil percentage in my soap formula to accommodate the beeswax.
Your soaps are truly lovely. I am allergic to Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Tomato Sauce. I also have become sensitive to Spinach. I wish I was sensitive to spinach when I was younger and not chocolate and peanut butter 😉

if you weren't doing the colors, could you add cocoa powder with the other powders? PS: I think the almond oil not reacting could be due to how much is in the recipe along with the saponification process so that there is very little in the superfat. Since soap is a rinse-off product that also helps (meaning I wouldn't make him a lotion or body butter with the almond oil). my 2 cents 🙂
Is it just the video or is it really more of a black liquorice colour than brown? I have had brown mica turn charcoal on me before. I’m wondering if all Brown Mica does the same thing. I would appreciate your expert opinion. Love what you do Ellen. You’re my inspiration 😊❤️
One of my kids friends has several severe allergies (peanuts, nuts, shellfish and corn). He’s going to pharmacy school and works as a pharmacy tech. Now most medicines are corn starch or corn syrup based so he has to be careful when stocking the pharmacy shelves. Well, a couple weeks ago he wasn’t so careful and got a face full of pill powder. He ended up in the ER with his entire face swollen and his eyes almost swelled shut. My daughter was helping him out since he couldn’t see well and said the reaction “wasn’t too severe”. When I saw the picture his mom had of the swelling I was like “that’s not severe!!!” and she says “well, it didn’t affect his breathing so not too severe”. I’m always very careful when I make food for him but after seeing that I’m going to be even more cautious.
Oh my goodness, what a story... I'm glad he's okay. Yes, allergies are no joking matter. I never really understood until I knew someone close to me that suffers...
I have a severe allergy to mango. I actually went into anaphylactic shock the first time I tried mango. I now have to watch purchasing soaps as sometimes mango butter is used as an ingredient.
I have a couple people who asked me to make soap for them with nut allergies. I don't use almond oil but instead use avocado oil. Typically they want unscented and uncoloured goat milk soap from me. 💜
My daughter is extremely allergic to tree nuts. I have reformulated my soap recipe to exclude nut oils for fear she could have a reaction. Up to this point she hasn’t, but after having seen an allergist and knowing how allergic she is I just won’t risk it.
So fun fact, I learnt this from another cosmetic maker. An almond ISNT a nut! Can you believe it!? I had no idea. I always assumed it was, and avoided it because I didn't want to have any nut ingredients in my formulations. I love sweet almond oil, but removed it thinking it was. Every day is a school day I guess. 😊

My husband and I both have some food allergies, but I think we should be ok with soaps. I mean, I don't think anyone would put garlic or red or green peppers in to soap. If they did, then we'd really be in trouble!
I usually use frozen goat milk for my goat milk soap & immediately refrigerate after made until next day. For the milk in oil method, do you use cold milk? And do you refrigerate immediately or just keep it out on counter?

I totally love this soap and I love this fragrance too!! Totally your fault of course! 😂 Speaking of allergies: The past couple of months I've been extremely reactive to the point of having anaphylaxis episodes for 8 days straight, 5 of which I ended up in hospital. I had to stab myself with an epipen the whole nine yards! So I've been taking prescription anti allergy medication for now over two months. Get this though.....I'm not allergic to anything!!! Nothing, nadda, not a thing! 🤪😱 The allergist says my immune system has reboot itself. I dunno, go figure. I was in so much pain with massive hives covered from head to toe. Trust me, I know what all that feels like and I'm not even allergic to anything!
I had finished the first run of prescription and I was only off briefly for just three days and I had another episode of massive hives and my skin was on fire again! I was sleeping at 4:30 am when it happened. Thank God this time I had medication and knew what to do! It settled down after an hour or so. The doctor said it may take up to a year to get rid of it, I have to let it run its course. 😕 I have to keep medication with me at all times!! Ah well, I guess this will pass sooner or later. My mom has a severe allergy to coconut oil. She used a body wash with coconut oil in it without knowing and she had to take a steroid and have a special medicated body wash for awhile. Not sure about bar soap though she doesn't dare try anything anymore.
Wow what a pretty swirl. What color are the kisses? It kinda looks like black, or dark blue! You could always substitute chocolate for carob in desserts. I used to work in childcare and one day a man bought his granddaughter in to drop her off and her face was all swollen from grandpa giving her a kiss goodbye and he had peanut butter on toast for breakfast and it was enough to swell her face up, the poor little love looked like she had been beaten up 😰😧🥺
My son had problems with his stomach growing up especially going to the toilet. Doctors always said it was because he needed to drink more but, even then it never got better. When he was 22 he got tested for allergies and found out he was lactose intolerant. He decided to go fully vegan because milk powder is in a lot of food that we would never consider milk to be in. He's been much better since going vegan and, as a die hard meat eater when he was younger he's not regretted it.

I hate to tell you Ellen but fruit cake has walnuts in it so that's of the table for him as well. So hopefully you don't have that on the table during the holidays or he's going to be spending time in the er.
I honestly don't know what any of the chocolate scents smell like nowadays. I gave up on them almost a decade ago because they all smelled fake/not right. Have you found many TRUE chocolate scents? Nice soap, btw ;O)
Maybe your soaps are fine for your son in law because Almonds are not nuts. They are botanical relatives of roses and peaches, as far as I know. Family of Rosaceae. But from here it gets tricky… as long as an almond product (oil, flour,…) comes from a production line NOT contaminated with residue from real nuts (e.g. Haselnut, Walnut, …) it‘s safe to use for people with allergies. But many companies dealing with real nuts also have almonds as a product and cross contaminations are always an issue. If you have a very „clean“ Almond oil it should not cause any problems. Additionally the lye might destroy the surface molecule causing the allergic reaction which leads to no reaction at all. Would be great to get feedback from a scientist conducting research in the field of allergies…someone out there to help us out? 😊
I'm not sure?? My son in law is allergic to nuts and can use my soap with almond oil in it. I suggest making a small batch and doing a tiny skin test after it's cured.

My son is allergic to all nuts including coconut 🥥. But it’s the protein that triggers it so he is not affected by the oils I use in my soaps.
I have a customer who is allergic to coconut oil or anything coming from coconut. Planning to make some Palm oil soap for him.

It's probably my lighting, because these are a nice chocolatey brown color in person.

When I saw the picture his mom had of the swelling I was like “that’s not severe!!!” and she says “well, it didn’t affect his breathing so not too severe”. I’m always very careful when I make food for him but after seeing that I’m going to be even more cautious.

I have a severe allergy to mango. I actually went into anaphylactic shock the first time I tried mango. I now have to watch purchasing soaps as sometimes mango butter is used as an ingredient.

I have a couple people who asked me to make soap for them with nut allergies. I don't use almond oil but instead use avocado oil. Typically they want unscented and uncoloured goat milk soap from me. 💜
Sounds good, a "plane jane" soap is great for people with sensitivities.
My daughter is extremely allergic to tree nuts. I have reformulated my soap recipe to exclude nut oils for fear she could have a reaction. Up to this point she hasn’t, but after having seen an allergist and knowing how allergic she is I just won’t risk it.
Do you make more than the size batch to fit your mold for the piping or just don’t pour it all and put some in the bags?
Yes,the piping is just batter from the batch that I save off and let thicken😉
So fun fact, I learnt this from another cosmetic maker. An almond ISNT a nut! Can you believe it!? I had no idea. I always assumed it was, and avoided it because I didn't want to have any nut ingredients in my formulations. I love sweet almond oil, but removed it thinking it was. Every day is a school day I guess. 😊

Also, I found out recently that those who have allergies to latex should avoid shea butter as the shea tree can contain natural latex 😳 fascinating!
My husband and I both have some food allergies, but I think we should be ok with soaps. I mean, I don't think anyone would put garlic or red or green peppers in to soap. If they did, then we'd really be in trouble!
I usually use frozen goat milk for my goat milk soap & immediately refrigerate after made until next day. For the milk in oil method, do you use cold milk? And do you refrigerate immediately or just keep it out on counter?
Yes, my goat milk in cold, but I like gel phase, so I put a blanket over my molds to force a gel.

Speaking of allergies: The past couple of months I've been extremely reactive to the point of having anaphylaxis episodes for 8 days straight, 5 of which I ended up in hospital. I had to stab myself with an epipen the whole nine yards! So I've been taking prescription anti allergy medication for now over two months. Get this though.....I'm not allergic to anything!!! Nothing, nadda, not a thing! 🤪😱 The allergist says my immune system has reboot itself. I dunno, go figure. I was in so much pain with massive hives covered from head to toe. Trust me, I know what all that feels like and I'm not even allergic to anything!

I had finished the first run of prescription and I was only off briefly for just three days and I had another episode of massive hives and my skin was on fire again! I was sleeping at 4:30 am when it happened. Thank God this time I had medication and knew what to do! It settled down after an hour or so. The doctor said it may take up to a year to get rid of it, I have to let it run its course. 😕 I have to keep medication with me at all times!! Ah well, I guess this will pass sooner or later.

My mom has a severe allergy to coconut oil. She used a body wash with coconut oil in it without knowing and she had to take a steroid and have a special medicated body wash for awhile. Not sure about bar soap though she doesn't dare try anything anymore.
I've heard Babassu oil is a good sub for coconut.?.

You could always substitute chocolate for carob in desserts.
I used to work in childcare and one day a man bought his granddaughter in to drop her off and her face was all swollen from grandpa giving her a kiss goodbye and he had peanut butter on toast for breakfast and it was enough to swell her face up, the poor little love looked like she had been beaten up 😰😧🥺
The kisses came out dark brown. Yes, allergies are no fun, especially in children..
My son had problems with his stomach growing up especially going to the toilet. Doctors always said it was because he needed to drink more but, even then it never got better. When he was 22 he got tested for allergies and found out he was lactose intolerant. He decided to go fully vegan because milk powder is in a lot of food that we would never consider milk to be in. He's been much better since going vegan and, as a die hard meat eater when he was younger he's not regretted it.
Personally, I'm a low carb carnivore.. But I'm so glad he found a way to heal and feel better!

Less than .5 oz, I do a steep water discount anyway so this small amount doesn't throw things off..

I hate to tell you Ellen but fruit cake has walnuts in it so that's of the table for him as well. So hopefully you don't have that on the table during the holidays or he's going to be spending time in the er.
I honestly don't know what any of the chocolate scents smell like nowadays. I gave up on them almost a decade ago because they all smelled fake/not right. Have you found many TRUE chocolate scents? Nice soap, btw ;O)
Maybe your soaps are fine for your son in law because Almonds are not nuts. They are botanical relatives of roses and peaches, as far as I know. Family of Rosaceae.
But from here it gets tricky… as long as an almond product (oil, flour,…) comes from a production line NOT contaminated with residue from real nuts (e.g. Haselnut, Walnut, …) it‘s safe to use for people with allergies. But many companies dealing with real nuts also have almonds as a product and cross contaminations are always an issue. If you have a very „clean“ Almond oil it should not cause any problems. Additionally the lye might destroy the surface molecule causing the allergic reaction which leads to no reaction at all. Would be great to get feedback from a scientist conducting research in the field of allergies…someone out there to help us out? 😊

My husband is allergic to grapes. If I made soap I would not be able to use grapeseed oil.
I'm not sure?? My son in law is allergic to nuts and can use my soap with almond oil in it. I suggest making a small batch and doing a tiny skin test after it's cured.
