I had to buy a new wheelbarrow since the wood handles and tray supports rotted and broke and I needed one ASAP. You inspired me to restore my old one now as a back up or for special occasions. Old wheelbarrows never die!
Okay, I’ll admit that I wasn’t too optimistic about this vid before I clicked on it, however you nailed it my friend!! Very impressed with your attention to detail on so many fronts. The use of the camera and angles and different views - excellent. Sound effects - funny and right on the money. Didn’t see the need to bore us with endless rambling audio - perfect. Overall quality of the video, editing etc - superb. Dog - !!!! 5 stars. Oh and yes the wheelbarrow. An extremely well done restoration. So good in fact that I will not get to see this restoration done again in my lifetime which - sucks. Thanks
+The Muz Shop I love how you take your furbaby for a ride in the wheelbarrow. Beautiful job! I too decided to restore my old rusty, trusty wheelbarrow. I went to price a new wheelbarrow in 2022. Outrages prices! I will continue to restore mine for many years to come. Thanks for sharing. Angel from The Bay
Very Cool! My wheelbarrow is better and stronger then the day I bought it.... If you are going to restore yours , do yourself a favor and change out the wheel to a no flat wheel. Like this one amzn.to/3s23hTp. I didn't do it in the video but I did and love it .....no more grading the wheelbarrow and having a flat tire. Thanks for watching
Awesome!! After the video I changed the wheel to a solid rubber wheel so no more flats. I love it. Link in the description below the video. Thanks for watching.
I am going to buy a new steel wheelbarrow soon and seeing you make the handles out of wood like that inspired me to do the same! I am going to take some nice hickory from an old tool handle and make two new handles that fit my hand nicely and install them into the tubes that make up the frame. Thanks for the inspiration!
Well, that was pretty awesome! I'm going to give it a try, except for the tire and wheel. I've got a spare in the garage. Thanks for the great video!! 👍
Cool!! Give it a go. Not in the video but I purchased a solid rubber wheel from Amazon amzn.to/3VUJTnt and I love it !! No more flat tire or having to fill up a low tire. Thanks for watching. 👍👍👍
Very nice refurbishing project. While I am not in with the flame burnt handles, I do like the effort you put into this project. And the cute little dogs made a great cameo as well.
Thanks !! The burnt handles was not intended for cosmetic but to help preserve the wood. Its a Japanese wood preserve treatment call shou sugi ban. Check it out , it's interesting. Thanks again for watching.
I had a similar project restoring my metal wheel barrow except the outside of it was fine. It was just the inside that had rust because I left dirt in it too long. I first sealed up the leaks around the bolt head and then poured several containers of Evapo Rust into the wheel barrow. Within 24 hrs it dissolved all the heavy caked on rust at the bottom. It left pock marks where the rust used to be which meant the rust had penetrated too deep for a grinder and the Evapo Rust solvent was indeed the best way. After I cleaned out the residue of the Evapo Rust solvent I pretty much went through the same process seen here. Btw, to transfer the Evapo Rust out of the wheel barrow and back into its containers I used a Drummond 750 GPH drill pump from Harbor Freight. I think it’s better than the one Home Depot and Ace sells.
This just added to my honey do list, thanks.... haha Really though that was a great video and now I'm off to restore my old WB that was slatted for the dump.
Yours is unique having that front bumper with the 2 bolts instead of one. On the cheap wheelbarrows that's usually the failure point. Where it gets rocked upwards it tears the very end of the handles up or the metal fender itself. We bought our home 17 years ago and it came with a wheel barrow just like yours, but both handles and the tub had deteriorated. I saved the m.j etal hardware, but had ti buy a cheap wheelbarrow to do immediate work. My cheap wheelbarrow is finally dead and my brother in law just gave a really nice folded steel jackson contractor wheelbarrow that needs a tire and fender. The fender I'd salvaged all those years ago is just like yours. I've some wite oak about 6ft long and 2" thick that should make some nice handles. I will have to get me some new carriage bolts and nuts because the old ones were a different size.
Sounds good. You’ll love a good wheelbarrow. What I did after the video, I got a solid rubber tire and I real like it … no more filling the tire every time I go to use it. Thanks 👍👍
I searched UA-cam for "refurbishing a wheel barrow" because I have one I'd like to fix up - Clicked on this video - And it's the exact same wheelbarrow I have!! What're the odds? EDIT: You also have the exact same power washer I do - Are we lost twins?!
That is so cool!! Have fun with the restoration. I didn’t show it in the video but I bought one of those solid rubber tire 🛞. No more flats. Thanks for watching.
If replacing bolts, I'd use galvanized nuts and bolts and such. My experience is that the threads on plain steel get badly rusted and damaged. To avoid a major restoration like this, I'd recommend that people take their barrow completely apart after ten years. Prime and paint all the wood and metal. Grease the bolts when reinstalling. That would be easy work to do and not take much time. Too many years of neglect multiplies the work that needs to be done ---- a lot.
And---- oh yes. My only real criticism of this video was that the tire was not removed and the entire wheel treated for rust and refinished. A leading reason for wheelbarrow failure is that the tire wont stay inflated, and that's usually caused by a rusting, pitted wheel where the tire needs to make good contact.
I bought the DW402 115 mm 4 1/2" angle grinder back in 2002. It's still keeping me occupied every evening. It's outstanding! Get yourself some good disc paddles for concrete, metal and wood. You will love it!
Hey guys, can a sand blaster be used for this? Not that I wanna try, just curious to see if anyone has tried it that way and what were the results? 👍🏽👎🏽 -Thanx
Thanks and have fun with it, putting new handles and a solid tire makes a world of difference. Be safe and healthy. Email me a pic of before and after, I would love to see it.
I like your use of the spokeshave on the handles, however, since your tire had dry rot and the rim was rusty, why not just buy a new combo (rim and tire)? They are only $20 at Home Depot or Menards or you can get the no-flat tire/rim combo for $26 (Menards).
Thanks. Actually I did get a no-flat after I made the video and I love it. No more”get the air pump cause I’m going to use the wheelbarrow “ Thanks for the comment 👍🏻👍🏻
That was some of the best filming and editing I've seen on any DIY channel! Wow! Also a stylish project, interestingly made with the burned wood, totally subworthy. The one thing I did miss was more of a learning component - for example what kind of discs you were using on the angle grinder, what was the white first layer of paint, what oil did you use, and also some of your reasoning/thought process etc, is always interesting and great for learning. Cheers
Thank you for watching and the kind words. This video was set out to be just entertainment not a tutorial. But I would be more than happy to answer any questions. The wire wheel is a DeWalt DW4930, which really ripped through the paint. For primer I used Self-Etching Primer Rust-oleum. As for the oil that was a Penetrating rust breaker call Blasters. Burning the wooden parts was mainly to give the wood extra protection from the outdoor elements and I liked the look. There is a wood preservative called "Shou-Sugi-Ban". Look it up, its interesting.... If you have any more questions or suggestions on a topic you would like to see, email me. Thanks again and thanks for the sub👍👍
A very nicely done restoration project. Thanks for sharing the video. I just acquired a contractor wheelbarrow today (also blue tub!) that is in similar shape as your original. Will be putting a couple of your tricks to use on my restoration. Mine has an air filled (and currently flat) tire. What did you to fix your tire? Is using a never flat replacement a good idea?
My tire would be flat every time I went to use it. But know I don't have to worry about cause its solid rubber. So yes I think it's a great idea, here's the one I got amzn.to/2QpJZVD. Thank you
C'mon man, the dog did nothing to earn that ride in the $1000 wheelbarrow. Flaming finishing (and oiling the handles) does seem a little over the top. But man, that wheelbarrow may outlive you at this point. Also concerned the black paint is not regulation, but a minor point at this point. GREAT JOB!!!!
You maybe right. But I had a great time restoring it .. Plus those handles I put on are so much nicer than store bought. Longer and way stronger. Also I put on a solid rubber tire on it after the video, no more flats. It is now a beast!!

I was hypnotized by your videography as well as the restoration. A shame to get it dirty! Oh, and a great pup as well!
Thanks Jimmie! You are right , it's going to be hard to throw dirt in her the fist time.

Is the sugiban to preserve , or for cosmetics?
Mostly to preserve but I like the look too. Thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What did you coat the blue in to protect the paint?
I LOVE everything about this video .
I brushed used motor oil on the handles underneath the barrow where it was a little rotted. Will it help prevent rot? Also on the rims.
I love ur sounds and transitioning
Didn't see where the type of wood for the handles is listed. Is it oak? Thanks!
I used Ash for the handles because it not as brittle as oak. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks Maestro!
Hi, I like how you fixed it. I don't have a table saw. How can I get my handles cylindrical as you have done? What tool would help me with that?
Use a chisel, or even a knife, to carve the handles to your satisfaction.
Cap head bolts are a pain the remove! The nut spins the head! I replace them with hexagonal head bolts.
