At this stage, Roslyn was still the heavy favorite with Katarina only talked about mainly for her beauty and resemblance to Brooke Shields (personally I don't see the resemblance). In the LP, both Witt and Roslyn chickened out of some triple jumps, but I think again it was Witt's looks that helped boost her lead over Roslyn in winning the Gold. If Sumners did not chicken out of those two triple jumps, the Gold was hers.
Looks can't skate. Put Brooke shields on the ice and it won't look graceful at all. It takes a lot of hard work to skate beautifully. That's the artistic merit. Ballet classes, working on a character, chose an outfit that suits the music. Besides, she fully mastered her jumps and did you see the confident footwork? So, give her the credit she deserves. I don't even think she's that beautiful phisically, but her skating certainly was!
What? Katarina Witt had 3 clean tripples, including 2L3T, which no other female skater had! Plus 2 clean 2A. There where no comparison to all the errors Sumners did!
@@rekr3316 Exactly, Rosslyn popped so many jumps, including singling her double axels, she should'n't even have gotten 2nd, but she was lucky that she placed higher enough in the compulsories and short
John Sweeney ISU judges perpetrate greater bias/cheating at nearly every competition. They need to hire/train professional judges who come from non-ISU countries... Though I suppose they could start by kicking out cheaters for more than a season, not electing cheaters to positions of influence, and not letting spouses of federation presidents sit on judging panels...
every judge helps there own skater a certain amount....roz didnt make a major mistake and was hammered for it....the eastern block judges pushed katarina and other skaters and american judges pushed north american skaters this is not un usual
It's a part of figure skating. I saw somewhere that Lutz & Salchow wouldn't compete in the other's home country because of the shenanigans with the judging. And that's the early 1900's!
Queen Mao Asada. Might be because transferring this over to computer from the tv is def not easy especially a video from 1984 that was most likely taped. Sadly, quality lowers if someone isn’t great at it. The person who uploaded this prob didnt have much if any editing ability or resources.
+Doug Metris He had Witt .1 behind Chin, not .5 But besides all that...under the old scoring system, the judges numerical scores were meaningless - only the judges placements (or ordinals, as they were known) were what mattered.

Rousing performance! Katarina knew how to captivate an audience. Her gold medal was well deserved.
She was a fine skater, but I wouldn't be surprised if she got extra points just for being so stunningly beautiful.

Having won a gold medal does not automatically make you a good commentator. Skating and commentating are two VERY different things.

Tiffany Chin was better than Katarina Witt in this program, in every respect. The USA judge, Ray Alperth, was the only one who got it right.
