The 80s -90s is definitely the golden age of the artistry of figure skating. Many of those programmes are like shows, fun, entertaining, inspiring and emotionally touching. Even teenagers like Michelle Kwan, Oksana Baiul etc are possessed with great artistic ability. Katarina is definitely a show queen with a thousand faces. I can never get tired watching her. She is the only one who can dance to this type of music and manage to look mature and feminine instead of a childish play.
Oksana Baiul also did a terrific Broadway medley showgirl routine in her Gold-medal winning LP in 94. Tho Oksana didn't have the longevity of Witt's skating career, she pulled it together in Lillehammer.

Katarina brought so much to skating as well as the money you make after you leave amateur skating. I disagree with the mans commentary she was great. All these years later and I still enjoy watching her skate. And that smile...⛸
For a momento I saw Barbra Streissand, later Cyd Charisse to finish with Rita Hayworth and all due to the talent of Katarina Witt. A nice tribute to Hollywood and their musicals.
There was a better overall balance in the programme those days.I suppose you could argue it's more technical these days but that comes at a price, cramming in all the jumps and spins means there's very little room for the artistic side which in my opinion is what skating is all about.I know which version I prefer, who couldn't appreciate the charisma and grace that Katarina Witt brought to that era. That's PROPER skating.
+girolle01 It is all about doing more triples these days,I think most people agree it has taken the artistic side that Katarina presented out of the sport.Just saying.
Carl Thomas Is this what you consider artistic? All I see is a very junior level of choreography and really bad posture. There have been MANY skaters with more difficulty and better artistry since this performance. Stop looking at these performances with rose color glasses and inject a little objective critique.
Thang Vuong Sure, there have been skaters who later had more difficult routines, and more artistic spins etc such as Yuna Kim.But I still think Katarina had great artistry and charisma and without doubt was easily the best of her era. TWO Olympic golds, FOUR World titles, Six European titles how's that for rose tinted glasses.Oh and have I mentioned she's won more titles than any other figure skater.
Carl Thomas You know as well as I do her wins were the result of the corrupt judging. The school figures were a tool to control the results without anyone being able to question the objectivity of the judging.
Katarina won this on her guts. She was not the best skater in the field. Nor did she have the most difficulty. But she knew how to turn it out and compete.
She’s such a fierce competitor, she always hit when the pressure is greatest on her, whereas both Sumners and Thomas cracked under the pressure. Just like what Brian Boitano said, I would never want to compete against her (love her skating and all her costumes tho)
what is wrong wit u guys this was 24yrs ago at the time i am sure this performance was one in a million......i am sure if she was in this generation of young girls she would hv done better due to the standards.
She still remains my favorite skater to this day, best presentation ever and she always draws the crowd in. Dare I say, I actually enjoy this program more than her Carmen free skate. Both were beautifully choreographed, but this short program had a little more variety in jumps, there was a triple toe + double loop instead of her typical triple toe + double toe. Kinda miss when she used to do a double lutz + triple toe as her opening jump in the free skate
@@vistaprime gaudy? well.....typical excess for the times. Gaudy wasn't the issue but modesty. Yes, it's a word that has no relevance in this century. Also very high cut legs on costumes and leotards were ubiquitous during this decade. It startled the status quo.
As far 13 year old being better than Witt, I find it impossible, especially after watching the atrocious, boilerplate, cookiecutter routines of today at the Us Nationals - todays girls are NO MATCH compared to the great competitors of the 70s, 80s and into 90s - and although Witt I'll admit did not have the best technique, she was the best and toughest competitor and biggest charmer, and yes there were times she was overmarked, but Manley was given generous marks in the SP here too...
At the Europeans competition a few months before the Olympic, there was much less feathers around the hip area; The judges felt the cut was too high around the legs. So more feathers were added for the Calgary Games.
13 year old girls today don't have to worry about school figures making up a huge chunk of their score. They are free to focus on mastering the full complement of jumps rather than spending countless hours learning to trace a perfect pattern. Don't knock Katerina for responding to the demands of the time.
I don't know. The audience seemed to get that there were better skaters who were not getting the marks! Midori Ito's program was superior in literally EVERY way from this, and the audience knew it. I noticed that they gave Witt rather lukewarm applause after both her short and long. I respect Witt for her consistency, but she was, without a doubt, over marked constantly.
The greatest figure skater and ice ballerina through all times. Plain and simple. The glamorous QUEEN of the ice. There has never been another Katarina. And there never will be.
She was not the best technically in that SP - Ito, Thomas, Kadavy, and Manley were better. She won the SP because her showmanship and charm carried the day with the judges, on the second set of marks.
Manley was not really better technically. Similarily easy jump combo and stronger spins, more spring on some jumps, but a wobbly jump combo and a big wobble on her camel spin. 2 very shaky elements while Witt had none, and both had an easy combo.
Nichts gegen Kati.
@zuzanna but you could say the same of skaters 30 years before. Look at Peggy Flemings Olympic performances or Dorothy Hamill. They were groundbreaking in their time but in 1988 they were easy too 🤷🏽♀️ it’s called progress
The most artistic figure skater through all times. If there EVER WAS an ARTIST on the ice, THIS GIRL was it. How I wished we still saw the wonderful artists like her on the ice, the real roses of the figure skating like her, Kristi Yamaguchi, Oxana Baiul... Today's stick-thin Russian jumping machines that have taken over the ice leave me completely cold. Witt's figure skating was EVERYTHING that art and poetry on the ice are about. And did she take the world by storm, despite being constantly totally UNDERRATED by American judges that did everything and more to stop her from taking what was always hers - the titles of the World Champion and Olympic Champion!!! Thank God the rest of the judges had eyes on their head!!!
The best looking female skater of all times . what a women . she told the world that ice skating is more than jumps ... it is art !

It’s because the former version of this dress did not have any feathers. The conservative judges thought it too revealing.

Kristi Yamaguchi is the best ever, in my humble opinion.

Yup....She was the best for that era. Figure skating now is so much more refined and more technically challenging.

Yet they do not have her charm and charisma. They are so afraid of making errors.
