As a former fighter pilot and instructor, when my sons and nephew took up flying and expressed an interest in the air force I did my best to dissuade them.
The Canadian military is a crippled politically correct dysfunctional organization.
Why put your life on the line operating antique equipment for a government and citizenry that permit the politicians to hold service members in contempt?
At one time I was extremely proud of serving.

Do you know where the term politically correct comes from? The Russian communist revolution and Mao's communist China. Being politically correct is to subjugate and 'destroy' hundreds of millions of citizens. Thank you for being a patriot. I have so much respect for strong, moral Canadian men willing to put their lives on the line to protect our citizens. I don't believe any of the BS sexual harassment suits the Trudeau government launched to remove strong men in leadership positions the moment his government took office. I am a woman and I know exactly why the 'MeToo' movement went crazy right around the time Trudeau was elected. Most Canadians can't fathom how sinister and diabolical an elected government can be. I learned this because I am the daughter of Polish immigrants who escaped communism and was lucky enough to be born and raised in Canada, the once greatest country in the world before Trudeau took office

My years of service 1967-96. 3rd Generation to serve in my family. x1 Grandfather infantry, x2 Uncles x1 Navy DSM x1 Infantry 3 WW2 beaches Dunkirk, Dieppe & Juno, My Dad, airforce 101 Sqn 32 missions Mar-Sep 1944 & me x2 Infantry Reserve Regiments x1 Regular Armoured Regiment. I’m truly fed up with partisan politics when it comes to comments about who ruined our military. Let me spell it out as to how our military was ruined since the end of WW2.
Both traditional governing parties ruined it by:
    1) not replacing expired equipment in a timely fashion when in power
    2) not fixing a broken procurement system when in power
    3) cutting & clawing back military budgets when in power
    4) reducing military strength when in power
    5) failure to support veterans, thus impacting recruitment, when in power
    6) never making it clear to Canadian voters / taxpayers that a Nation trading with the EU & US needs to honour NATO & NORAD alliances
The Canadian voters, who have never made the status of the Canadian military a voting issue own the state of our military every bit as much as the politicians.

      1) military training will challenge & develop your self awareness.
      2) You will make lifelong friends
      3) hopefully you will do meaningful things
      4) Canadian politicians of any stripe from time to time will make promises about equipment upgrades but… delay, delay & delay
      5) the current crop of World Leaders are abysmal & could deploy military forces on horrific & dishonourable actions.
      6) if injured to the point of being discharged follow on care might be a challenge.
      7) Serving in a local reserve unit, Land Sea or Air might give you the best control over your own military career & deployment
      8) the Canadian public has no idea as to what needs to be done to equip & sustain a military & is unlikely to make it a priority.
Now… do you want to join? Only one young family friend has so far, joined. But at least they thought it through.

I think it was the mindset of letting the USA protect us, Lack of major conflict for Canada since WW2 and being isolated by oceans with the USA on our southern border.
The will to spend the money to upkeep was not there post war with a lot of people not wanting to spend the money and without being in a conflict to keep the military in the public consciousness, it became a non priority.
And yes, it was every government since WW2.
Changing technology, constant upkeep became harder and harder and kept having the can kicked down the road.

    • @kevindelaney1951
      @kevindelaney1951 6 місяців тому

@@zerospace101 Agree that the Canadian mindset was much as you note. Further Canadians wanted to rest on the Laurels of WW1 & WW2 veterans and pretty much ignored the Korean conflict veterans. From my point of view as much as America now makes statements about Canada & other NATO members not paying our / their share… America was very content to carry the ball as it gave them unquestionable leadership. However after many, frankly far too many disastrous geopolitical wars America has lost much in the way of treasure in both lives & dollars. As noted before it falls to our governing political parties to connect the dots of Canada’s GDP, American, European trade & the military alliances of NATO & NORAD. It is time for Canada to grow up & become a restored highly capable ally.

Your valid point is just scratching the surface of the problems between the Canadian government and the military. The only question that I would raise, is how does anyone know that if the Conservatives were to get elected, that the situation with the military will significantly improve. The military has been in a 'death spiral' for decades under both the liberals and the conservatives. To ad insult to injury, the canadian press has not be of any help in the past. Why should anything change in the future?

A number of years ago , our centurion tanks were breaking down . Brakes failing ,transmission problems ,high fuel consumption ,,too slow and poorly armed . At this point ,many upgrades were available for Centurion to make them a much better/capable tank . Not exactly cheap ,but cheaper than buying fresh tanks . The government had noticed this problem and ordered replacement parts for the tanks. Notice ,I said "Replacements" ,not improvements. The parts were installed and they worked well.....for 2 years or so. The replacement parts had worn out....big suprise . Other countries had not only replaced parts on their Centurions ,they had improved them and they were still superb tanks ,quite capable of being combat machines.
    But not in Canada....
The P.M.went to Germany and ordered Leopard 1 ,which was nearing its production run.
The Germans were developing the very first Leopard 2 and offered Canada an an idea. If Canada could help with some minor issues and some testing ,then Canada could be the first foriegn country to buy Leopard 2 for much less. They were even willing to give us a royalty on any other Leopard 2foriegn sales since we were willing to help with the development and testing. If we bought Leopard 2 for a very good price ,we were in .
Our Pm said no ,just give us our tanks. Our Leopard One(s).
Canada could have been a partner and actually have better tanks than the new M-1 Abramsq, then just coming into service.. We missed out on royalties because our pm was determined-- to pretty much kill the CAF .
Eventually ,we did buy Leopard 2 . Mostly used ..And now our Pm gives them to other countries ,while telling the CAF that they will be replaced .
    Eventually.
    Not gonna hold my breath.
BTW ,the Leopard 1 purchase/was by Pierre Trudeau.
The great Leopard 2 giveaway ? His son . Justin.
    See a pattern ?

I had one uncle who served in the RCAF as a Lancaster pilot during WW2, another uncle who was at Dieppe with the Calgary Regiment. My dad was post-war RCAF ground crew. My nephew served two tours in Afghanistan with PPCLI. They would all be appalled by the state of the Canadian military. My nephew most certainly is. He's also lost all trust in the bureaucracy as a veteran.

Im ex RN & for decades the canadian navy has been viewed as a drag on NATO. The personnel are fine its the costant asking for fuel & supplies of other navies is the problem, old ships & very old atrcraft that ain't available due to frequent breakdowns. Canada military has been a standing joke internationally for decades. The 'club' of the senior officers who get special treatment has harmed the forces badly (think russian badly) its like that. The politicians are ultimately to blame, unable to stick to a plan. 44 y o supply ships, 50 y o navy/coatguerd helicopters, museam age front line jets.

This is essentially the mind set since the 60's.
We should not invest in multimillion dollar planes or tanks I think anyway. We should be at the leading edge of technology regarding drone tech and autonomous systems and weapons. That would serve us better infinitely better considering our land size and future battlefields.
Much cheaper and easier to mass produce, make money off patents and sales in a private/government partnership that is 100% Canadian, including parts as much as possible.
We are better to become specialists more than a general all round army at this point. We ain't competing with no one anymore in traditional terms. So let us level up and go the direction the world is instead of trying to play catch up with numbers of tanks and planes etc.

I am a veteran and, during my 35 yr career, watched the degradation of our military through many different governments. The military had no public voice to speak for us. When I said we didn’t need all that diversity and inclusion crap, I was told I was resistant to change and it would be reflected in my performance evaluation report. The fitness standards were reduced to allow weaker individuals to become soldiers, sailors and airmen. I railed against that and once again I was being resistant to change. It is not just this liberal government that has made the CAF what it is today. Trudeau senior knew the importance of a strong military when he brought in martial law during the FLQ crisis but still allowed the budget to be cut. It’s been a long road down to what the CAF is today and will be a longer road out of the mess we are in. I blame the civilian bureaucracy of DND for most of this mess because the government takes the advice of senior staff in the department. End of rant for today.

The rot in the CAF is now terminal. There's no coming back. The very first thing that would be necessary is the will to bring it back and that doesn't exist and even if it did, just getting back to a level of respectability would take decades and hundreds of billions in expenditure which no government can, or would even want to, commit to.
